Classwork # 5 - Estimation

This document contains the solutions to 4 estimation problems. Problem 1 calculates a 95% confidence interval between 0.238 and 7.762 for the difference between the means of two samples with sizes 12 and 10 and standard deviations of 5 and 4 respectively. Problem 2 estimates the variability in response times for a driving hazard experiment on 100 adults aged 21-30 to be between 0.123 and 0.163 seconds squared using a 95% confidence interval. Problem 3 finds a 95% confidence interval for the ratio of variances from two teaching methods based on sample variances of 100 and 144 for classes of 121 and 61 students. Problem 4 constructs a 95% confidence interval for the true proportion of 500 employees

Estimation

CLASSWORK # 5

Name: ANNA KRIS L. DULFO

Date of Submission: SEPTEMBER 21, 2021

Direction: Solve completely, orderly and neatly the given problems.

1. Data was collected to compare the wear of two different materials. The summary
came up to be:
Sample Mean Size Sample Standard deviation
1 85 12 5
2 81 10 4

Calculate the 95% Confidence Interval (CI) on the difference between

the two means.

Solutions:
Given:
Confidence interval of 95% (1-0.95)/2= 0.25%
n>30 use z table
n1= 12
s1=5
x= 85
z0.025= 1.96
z=1+CI/2= 1+0.95/2= .975
z=1.96

µ1=µ2, α 1∧α 2known or (n1+n2)> 30

(x1-x2) z-α /2√ α 21/n1 + α 21/n2
The point to estimate µ1- µ2, is x1- x2= 4

Using α = 0.05 /2 = 0.025

1
LL= 4-1.96 √ 52//85 + 42/81
= 0.238
LL= 4+1.96 √ 52//85 + 42/81
= 7.762

µ1-µ2 > 30
Hence (µ1-µ2) lies between (0.238, 7.762) with confidence interval of 95%

2. Human beings vary in the time it takes them to respond to driving hazards. In one
experiment in which 100 healthy adults between age 21 and 30 years were
subjected to a certain driving hazard, and the sample variance of the observed
times it took them to respond was 0.0196 second squared. Assuming that the
times to respond are normally distributed, estimate the variability in the time
response of the given age group using a 95% confidence interval (CI).

Solutions:
The confidence level is 95%, so the α /2 = 0.025.
Reading the X2 table with100-1= 99 degrees of freedom (n-1)
2
We find that X20.025 = 128. 45, X20.975=128.45
0.0151 < 0.0265

The 95% C.I is given 0.123 < 0.163.

3. A standard and a new method of teaching statistics are being compared with
respect to their variability as measured by the final examination scores produced
by the two methods. One class is taught by each method, and both classes take
the same final examination. The observed sample variances are 100 and 144
respectively, where the first data coming from the standard method and the
second is from the new method. If the classes contained 121

and 61 students respectively, find a 95% CI for .

3
4. In a simple random sample of 500 employees, 160 preferred to take training
classes in the morning rather than in the afternoon. Construct a 95% CI on the
true proportion of employees who favor morning training classes.
