Crack Width Calculation For Column

This document describes the calculation of crack width (Wcr) in a reinforced concrete column according to IS 456:2000. It provides the formulas to calculate Wcr based on the steel strain (εm), distance from the reinforcement to the point of crack consideration (acr), and other section properties. The example calculation determines: 1) The depth of the neutral axis (x) as 188.11 mm by solving an equation involving the moment of inertia and steel/concrete areas. 2) The steel strain (εm) as 0.000578 by considering the cracked section properties and forces. 3) The crack width (Wcr) as 0.144 mm using the calculated values, which is

Crack Width Calculation for Column

3 acr ϵm
Wcr= 1+2(acr-Cmin)
(h-x)
where,
acr= Distance from the point considered to the surface of the nearest longitudinal bar
Cmin= Minimum cover to the longitudinal bar
ϵm= average steel strain at the level considered
h= Overeall depth of the member
x= Depth of neutral axis

where,

ϵm= ϵ1-b(h-x)(a-x)
3EsAs(d-x)
where,

As= Area of tension reinforcement

b= width of the section at the centroid of the tension steel
ϵ1= Strain at the level considered, calculated ignoring of the concrete in the tension zone.
a= Distance from the compression face to the point at which crack width is being calculated
d= Effective Depth

Crack Width Calculation for Column

Width of the column, b= 300 mm
Depth of the colum, D= 450 mm
Area of steel in tension zone= 942 mm2
Clear cover= 50 mm
Effective cover at tension zone= 62.5 mm (35+12/2)
Area of steel in compression zone= 942 mm2
Modulus of elasticity for steel= 2x10^5 N/mm2
Effective Depth=d 387.5 mm

For crack width(Wcr) as per IS 456: 2000, Annex F,

acr= sqrt((S/2)^2+(dc)^2)-db/2

S= Spacing of reinforcement
S= 100 mm
d c= Effective Cover
d c= 62.5 mm
db= Dia of main reinforcement
db= 25 mm
acr= 105.424764150708
Calculation for Depth of Neutral Axis, X

We have,
(b*X) *X/2+(m-1)*Asc * (X-dc) = mAst*(m.Ast x (d-x) Eq.1
where,
m= modular ratio= Es/Ec= Constant used for strain compatibility
As per IS:456-2000,
Ec= modulus of Elasticity of Concrete.
Ec=5000 (fck)^0.5/(1+ϴ) (For Long Term)
Where, ϴ= Creep Coeficient
Considering long term Creep, ϴ=1.1), IS456-2000,Cl.6.2.5.1

m= (2x10^5)/(500/(1+1.1)*(25)^0.5
m= 17.78
From Eq.1,
300*X^2/2+(17.78-1)*1296*(X-62.5)=17.78*1296*(537-X)
On Solving,

X= 188.11 mm

Calculation for ϵm

ϵm= ϵ1- b(h-x)(a-x)/(3 Es (d-x))

ϵ1= Strain at level based on cracked section analysis

(strain at concrete at the level of steel)
ϵs= (fc/Ec)-My / (Icr x Ec)
ϵs= Strain in longitudinal steel.

Here,
Icr= Moment of inertia for cracked section

Icr= (b x X^3) / 3 + m. Ast(d-x)^2+ (m-1) Asc x (X-d')^2

300x 188.11^3/3 + 17.78*1296*(537.5-188.11)^2+(17.78-1)*1296*(188.11-62.5)^2

Icr= 3.82x10^9 mm4

and , y= Distance from NA to the tensile steel location

d-X
537.5-188.11=349.99 mm

Consedering long term creep, ϵs= fc/Ec

ϵs= M x Y/(Icr x Єc)

M= 123.3 KN-m M=(Ƴ*h*h^2/8)

ϵs= 123.3*10^6 * 349.99/(3.82x10^9 * 0.48*5000(30)^0.5)
0.000859

ϵ1= ϵs x (a-x)/(d-x)

ϵ1= 0.000859*(600-188.11)/(537.5-188.11)

0.00101

ϵm= ϵ1- b(h-x)(a-x)/(3 Es (d-x))

0.00101-300*(600-188.11)(600-188.11)/(3*2*10^5*(537.5-188.11))

0.000578

Crack width, Wcr= 3 acr ϵm

1+2(acr-Cmin)
(h-x)
3x105.424x0.000578/(1+2x(105.424-50)/(600-188.11)

Wcr= 0.144 mm

As crack width, Wcr=0.144mm is less than 0.2mm, Hence safe.
