When I was at university I studied engineering. My father really wanted me to be a doctor like he
was, but I was more interested in being an engineer. The place that I grew up in was famous for its
mines and factories, so it was natural for me to want to study engineering.
I enjoyed studying engineering and I got a good grade when I graduated. I also managed to get a
job quickly after leaving university, and I thought that I would be able to use everything I had
learned in the job. What a surprise I had when I first started working. None of the jobs that I was
asked to do required any knowledge of the subjects I had studied at university.
I really thought I would have the opportunity to apply my knowledge in the workplace. I quickly
began to realise that skills such as being able to work in a team and take part in meetings are far
more important. One thing that surprised me was that I had to write very formal letters for the
company which I had never done before, or even learned how to do. I had to ask my boss how to
do this, but he was happy to help me.
When I spoke to some of the senior engineers, they told me that they had had the same experience
as me when they first joined the company. They said that I shouldn’t worry too much, because I
would learn these skills quickly.
Another thing that I found difficult was working with people who have very different personalities
to mine. How I get on with someone depends on how close their character is to my own.
Generally, I find it easier to work with people who are similar to me.
