Quiz 2

Full marks: 10 (5+2+2+1)

Question:

Nitrogen dioxide (𝑁𝑂2 ) is a well-known oxidizer and is capable of oxidizing 𝐶𝑂 to form 𝐶𝑂2.

Researchers have formulated an elementary chemical reaction mechanism (shown in the box)

using quantum mechanics-based calculations to

explain this oxidation process. Engineers developing

the reactor for 𝐶𝑂 oxidation by this process need to

derive a simplified mathematical equation to

estimate the rate of formation of 𝐶𝑂2. The global

reaction proposed for this purpose is also shown.

Considering the global rate expression:

𝑑[𝐶𝑂2 ]
= 𝐾𝐺 [𝑁𝑂2 ]𝑚 [𝐶𝑂]𝑛
𝑑𝑡

a) Find the expression for 𝐾𝐺 in terms of the elementary rate coefficients.

b) Find values of m and n.

c) Based on your answers to parts (a) and (b), state which one of the reactions R1 or R2 is

faster. Justify your answer.

d) What approximation have you considered to solve this problem and why?
