Your sibling has sent you a letter asking for an update on your life.Write a letter to
your sibling. In your letter:
- Describe what you did for your last birthday
- Ask for photos of your sibling’s last holiday
- Talk about something you are looking forward to
Dear Sue,
As for me, I was out for my birthday last week; seven of us went to see a
play at the Royal Exchange Theatre, and we stayed out late at a cocktail bar. The
play was good, the drinks were many, and I had to take the next day off work with
the world’s biggest hangover. I swear they get worse every year.
I’ll be going to Spain for a couple of weeks next month, though, that’ll be good.
That reminds me, send me those photos from your last holiday, that one to Croatia,
when you went to all those music festivals - that sounded like the best time when
you told me about it.
I’m looking forward to going to a festival or two, myself, and I want to get a good
idea of what the different ones are like. If you want to go with me next year, give
me a shout ASAP.
Dear Sammy,
Thank you for agreeing to house-sit for me. If you need to contact me while I'm
away, I’ll be staying at The Merrion Hotel, Merrion Square in Dublin. If it’s
urgent, however, please call me on my mobile phone, which I’ll keep with me at
all times. I’ve written the numbers on a sticky note which I’ve left on the fridge.
My cat needs to be fed twice daily -morning and evening. So each morning and
evening put a handful of cat food in his dish and fresh water in his water pot. You
will find the food in a jar in the kitchen cupboard. Please check throughout the day
to make sure he drinks plenty of fresh water. You can give him a small bowl of
milk in the evening but do it every other day.
I would like you to water my plants, too. The indoor ones in the lounge only need
water twice a week but the plants on the balcony need to be watered daily except
on rainy days. Finally, for security, please lock the door and shut the windows
before you go to bed. Also, clear my mailbox every day and keep the outside lights
on at night.
Warm wishes,
Donna
Your friend is thinking about learning to drive and would like some advice. Write a
letter to your friend.
- Say why a driving license is advantageous
- Recommend a driving school
- Give extra guidance/ tips
Dear Nick
I am glad to hear that you have decided to learn driving. The idea of learning to
drive will definitely change your life.
But firstly, you need to have driving license which can be a way round to remove
all the restrictions to drive anywhere with freedom. You will be independent in
handling routine tasks for instance office, shopping etc. Moreover it is a social and
legal responsibility of being an ideal citizen.
Secondly, you need to search a good driving school with supportive & experience
instructors. I would like to recommend the Hall Driving School in the down town.
I, myself, have learnt from this renowned driving school. All the instructors are
well trained and experienced professionals. The medium of instructions include
both theoretical as well as practical aspects. Moreover, you will also learn the
traffic rules as well which are the foremost important in today’s life.
To become proficient in all aspects you have to appear for an exam to test you
knowledge of driving before obtaining license. I think, a two –week course will be
sufficient for you to be perfect and clear the driving trust.
I hope my advice will serve the purpose. Looking forward to hear from you.
Love,
Rob
You have a pen-friend living in a foreign country and she is curious to learn about
the social life of your country. You think she will learn better about your country if
she travels through it. Write a letter to your friend inviting her to visit your
country. In the letter,
I am writing to invite you to visit my country. I know you have always been
fascinated by Ukraine and I would like to invite you to visit it so that you can
experience it in person.
I was always intrigued by your interest in learning about our people’s culture and
tradition. I think it would be best if you get a real experience of the country’s
incredible places, and learn / discover all about it in detail. Also, it would give me
a chance to meet you and I’m so excited about it!
Let me help you out by making the required bookings and picking out the best
travel facilities during your visit. I promise you that I would make this trip hassle-
free for you with the help of my uncle, who works for the tourism department over
here.
I remember you telling me that you have a two month break after your first
semester, so pack your bag for a month and leave to India immediately, because
you can’t get the real taste of it if we do not have enough time.
Warm regards
Ann
Dear Sam,
Thanks so much for your latest letter. I’m really excited to hear that you’re
planning to visit Toronto. It will give me a chance to take you around, as you did
so kindly for me when I was in Amsterdam last year.
Regarding your visit, I would be happy to help in any way possible. First, unless
you really like freezing weather, I suggest you come in the summer months of July
or August. Though most hotels are expensive at that time, we have some
wonderful guest suites available in our high-rise building, for only about $50 per
night. They are fully furnished studio apartments, with a kitchen, so you can have
the option of eating in. Just let me know your dates and I can make a reservation
for you.
Summer is also the time when all the tourist sites are open. We can visit Centre
Island, Canada’s Wonderland, Niagara Falls, the CN Tower, the Royal Ontario
Museum, the Science Centre and Thousand Islands. The weather should be warm
and comfortable, around 25 – 30 degrees Celsius, so bring your informal summer
clothes, a swimsuit and an umbrella too. We do get summer showers quite often.
I can’t wait for you to come! Write soon with more details,
Warm wishes
Irene
Dear Claire,
Thank you a lot for your last letter. It was a nice surprise to hear from you. I'm
sorry I haven't written to you earlier but I had to organise some things concerning
my trip.
As you probably remember I've always wanted to visit some unusual places.
And now, at last, off I went! But you'd never guess where I've chosen to spend my
holiday. It's Antarctica! You would never think of it, would you? I'm so excited
about the whole event!
The people I travel with are incredible. It's their fourteenth expedition there.
They know every path in the snow by heart and they are very helpful. They share
their knowledge and experience with me. Would you believe that here everything
is different? You even need to set your tent in a special way. It's all very
challenging. Tomorrow we plan to move further North so I may not be able to stay
in touch for a while.
Anyway, I'd like to meet you when I get back. Hope you are enjoying your
holiday. Do write back soon.
Love, Amanda
Dear Jane,
Thanks for your letter. I’m sorry I haven’t written for so
long, but I’ve been really busy with my exams. Now, it’s all
over and I’m having a short rest in London with my family.
London is wonderful! We are staying in a hotel not far from
the centre so we are able to walk around London almost all day
long. It’s amazing because London is a 24-hour city. We’ve
already seen most of the famous sights. Yesterday we visited
the Tower of London and enjoyed the legends told by the famous
Beefeaters.
Tomorrow we are going to Windsor. I am looking forward
to visiting this old town because I am fond of ancient castles.
We are also planning a trip to Stratford-upon-Avon. You know,
William Shakespeare is one of my favourite writers and I would
like to see his native town. I think it’ll be great!
I am coming back to Poland on Sunday, so I’ll be able to call
you next week. My best regards to your parents. How are they?
Dear Pat,
Thanks for the letter. You should write more often! Anyway,
how are things? I hope everything is OK at school.
It’s great that you’ve started to take care of your health! As
for keeping fit, I’d say that above all you need patience! Keeping
fit is something you should do regularly and try and keep it up
over a long time. If you don’t, it won’t have any effect.
First of all, start gently. Begin by walking — you can walk
to school, use the stairs (not the lift) and then go for longer
walks in the park. Then you should think about taking up a
sport. They say the best sport for keeping fit and healthy is
swimming. I agree. If you can’t go to the beach, go to your
local swimming pool.
Finally, watch your diet. You can eat more things, but not
too much of anything. If I were you, I’d try and eat fruit and
vegetables every day.
That’s all for now. Hope you find my advice useful.
Write soon.
Your friend asked you about a favourite program. Write him/her a letter
where:
-tell about favourite TV programm
-say about the plot
-say we he/she should watch it
Dear Paul,
How are you? I’m fine though I’m very busy these days. I’m getting ready for my
final exams at school. Thank you for your letter. It was interesting to learn more
about American television.
In your letter you asked me about my favourite TV programme. The series “The
Code of Honour” is one of the few that I attempt to regularly tune into each week.
A friend of mine talked me into giving this show, a try and I have never regretted
it.
It’s about a team of young men who fought together in Chechnya. When they
return to Russia, they become private detectives and continue their fight against
dishonest and cruel people. I admire them because they are brave, strong and
honest.
I’m not a diehard fan analysing every sentence, glance or breath of every character
in every episode, but I certainly enjoy the show. A person who says this show has
poor acting or plot development is most likely to be disappointed by any TV series.
Of course, it’s impossible to dot every “i” and cross every “t”, but by and large the
show remains at the top of its genre. The viewer’s interest is caught from the very
beginning of each episode and there is suspense till the very end. So if you want to
see a good Russian action series, watch “The Code of Honour”. The next season
will soon begin.
I’m looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Bye,
Alexander
Write a letter to your friend to tell about:
- why distance learning is popular
- learning routine
- cons of such king of learning
Dear David,
Thanks a lot for your letter. I was so glad to hear from you.
In your letter you asked me if distance learning is popular in
my country. Well, more than seven million students are enrolled in distance
learning programs. The statistics speak for themselves.
There are lots of benefits of online learning. Firstly, students can
combine their job
and studies. Secondly, you can simultaneously earn money and spend
it for education. Thirdly, you can get education at any time and age.
As for me, I did not realize that I took my routine and school day for
granted until now. My online school day consists of waking up at 10 am
instead of 6 am, working on my laptop in my bed instead of a classroom, and
now I make my own schedule. While this sounds pretty enjoyable for any
teenager, it has made me miss school. I miss walking down the hallways with
my friends. I miss sitting in a classroom with a teacher and other students,
having discussions and asking questions. I miss the loud and crazy
lunchroom. I truly miss things I didn’t even know that I loved about my
school.
Unfortunately, I’d better go now as I am having my online lesson at
11.00. Keep in touch.
All the best,
Alex
In your letter:
-write an apology for being late;
- explain the reason
-invite your friend to the holiday
Dear Jack,
I'm writing to say sorry for keeping you waiting at the station last weekend.
When I missed the train I was so upset I completely forgot to phone you at once to
let you know.
By the time I phoned you had already left for the station. I want to apologise
for being so thoughtless, I promise you it won't happen again. I still feel rotten for
not contacting you, so to make up.
I'd like to invite you to my house for the Easter weekend. We're having a big
party and lots of old friends will be there. I hope you can make it.
I'm sure we can still be friends and I hope that we can see each other again.
lt would be silly to fall out over my own stupidity.
Please give my regards to your family and write back soon.
Love.
Victoria
