Research 1 Module 5

Variables and Hypothesis

5
This topic is designed to develop the knowledge, skills, and desirable attitudes of an
individual in the field of Research where the student is expected of the following:

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

At the end of the module the student should have:

 demonstrated content knowledge and its application within and/or
across curriculum teaching areas in the field of research particularly
by identifying the types of variables and hypothesis.

******************************************************************************

Variables are measurable characteristics or properties of people or things that can take on
different values. In contrast, characteristics that do not vary are constants. One needs to know
which types of variables you are working with in order to choose appropriate statistical tests and
interpret the results of your study.
In addition, a hypothesis states a presumed relationship between two variables in a way
that can be tested with empirical data. A research hypothesis is a specific, clear, and testable
proposition or predictive statement about the possible outcome of a scientific research study
based on a particular property of a population, such as presumed differences between groups on a
particular variable or relationships between variables. Specifying the research hypotheses is one
of the most important steps in planning a scientific quantitative research study.
This lesson presents the varied types of variable and hypothesis as well as the importance
of these two concepts in research.
