Structural Analysis
Types of Framed Structures
The structures analyzed in this course are called framed structures and
can be divided into six categories:

7
Actions and Displacements
An action (sometimes called a generalized force) is most commonly a
single force or a couple.
8
Actions and Displacements
9
Actions and Displacements
A displacement is most commonly a translation or a rotation at some point in a
structure.

Static and Kinematic Indeterminacy
Example I . The space truss shown in Fig. 1-10 has pin supports at A,
B, and C. The degrees of static and kinematic indeterminacy for the
truss are to be obtained.
Static redundants
• No. of joints = 6
• Equations of equilibrium available at every joint = 3
• Total of equations of statics is available = 6 3 = 18
• No. of bar forces =12
• No. of reactions = 9 ( ⸪ rxns per support = 3)
• No. of unknown actions = 12 + 9 = 21
⇒ No. of static redundants = 21 − 18 = 3
⸫ The structure is statically indeterminate to the 3rd degree.
Kinematic redundants
No. of kinematic redundants = 6 3 − 3 3 = 9
⸫ The structure is kinematically indeterminate to the 9th degree. 17
