SketchUp Activity 1

Shortcuts to remember:
Rectangle - R Key Push/Pull - P Key
Line - L Key Offset - F Key
Circle - C Key Eraser - E Key
Scale - S Key Paint Bucket - B Key
Selection Tool - Space Bar Arch - A Key
Undo - Ctrl + Z Redo - Ctrl + Y
Zoom - Mouse Wheel Orbit - Click Mouse Wheel
Pan - Shift + Click Wheel Save - Ctrl + S

Things to ALWAYS DO FIRST:


1. Open SketchUp. If Necessary click Start Using SketchUp. Remember to click on the person and hit the delete key.
2. Save File: Hold down Ctrl + S Key. Make sure to double click the Computer Icon on the Left. Next, double click the
USB20 (F:) Drive Icon. Next, double click your class period, and repeat for your personal folder. Once in your personal
folder Type: SketchUp Activity 1 next to File Name. Finally click Save Button.
Practice:
1. Draw a square using the Rectangle Tool that has the dimensions 4’, 4’. Next pull the square up 4’ using the Push/Pull
Tool. Start next object beside the Cube you just created.
2. Draw a circle using the Circle Tool that has the dimension of 3’. Next pull the circle up 3’ using the Push/Pull Tool.
Start next object beside the Cylinder you just created.
3. Draw a circle using the Circle Tool that has the dimension of 4’. Next pull the circle up 8’ using the Push/Pull Tool.
Now Click Space Bar and click on top face of the Cylinder. Now click the S Key to activate the Scale Tool. (It will show
8 Green Squares only adjust the ones not on the corner.) One at a time click and move the green squares in and type
in .75 and click Enter. Repeat this step for all 4 green squares. This will create a Narrowing Cylinder. Start next object
beside the Narrowing Cylinder you just created.
4. Using the same steps as Practice #1 make a cube that is 5’ by 5’ by 5’. Once you have created the Cube you will pick
one side and draw a line using the Line Tool from one corner diagonally to another corner. Next, using the Circle Tool
draw a 2’ circle at the Mid-Point of the Diagonal Line you just drew. Once you have drawn your Circle you will Erase
the Diagonal Line using the Eraser Tool. It will Erase in 3 segments, make sure not to Erase your Circle. Once the
Diagonal Line is Erased you will Push the Circle through the box 5’ using the Push/Pull Tool. This will create a Cube
with a Hole through it. Start next object beside the Cube with a Hole.
5. Draw a Square using the Rectangle Tool that has the dimensions 8’, 8’. Click your F Key to activate your Offset Tool.
Click on your Square with the Offset Tool, then type in 6 (No Apostrophe) and hit Enter. This should have made an
even Band on the inside of your Square. Last, activate Push/Pull Tool and Click on your Band in the square, Pull the
Band up and Type 8’ and hit Enter. This should have created walls on your Square.
6. Still using the Square with Walls you will pick a side to put a door in. Draw a door with the Rectangle Tool and
dimensions of 6’, 3’. Now Push your Door with the Push/Pull Tool inward and type 6 (No Apostrophe) and hit Enter. If
done correctly this will put a door in your Square with Walls.
7. Still using the Square with Walls draw a Roof on it. You can use the Line Tool and the Push/Pull Tool to do so. Be
creative. There are no guidelines for the Roof.
8. Once the Roof is in place go back and put some Windows in using the same process as Practice #6.
9. Next Click B on your keyboard. This will activate your Paint Bucket. You can select different colors from the drop
down menu in the Paint Tool Box. Be creative with your colors. Remember, you can use Translucent for Windows,
Brick Cladding for Exterior Walls, and Roofing for the Roof.
10. Create an object on your own. It can be anything you want. Remember to use all of your Tools to be creative.
