DETAILED WRITE-UP ON SAINT KABIR DAS JI
INTRODUCTION
Kabir Das, a mystical poet and great Saint of India, was born in the month of Jyestha on
Purnima in the year 1440 and died in the year 1518. That’s why Saint Kabir Das Jayanti or
birthday anniversary is celebrated every year with great enthusiasm by his followers and
lovers on the Purnima of May or June (Hindi month of Jyestha). In 2013, it was celebrated
on 23rd of June, at Sunday. According to the Islam the meaning of the Kabir is The Great.
Kabir Panth is the huge religious community which identifies the Kabir as the originator of
the Sant Mat sects.
Legends speak of his widowed Brahmin mother, fearing ignominy and dishonor, forsook
him near a tank at Benares. Ironically, the honey drops dripping from the branch of a tree
nearby, sustained the infant.
Early in the morning a weaver, Niru, and his wife Neema heard the weeping infant and
gladly brought it to their own home. In this manner, the Brahmin child Kabir was brought
up in the family of a Muslim weaver. Niru’s poverty prevented him from imparting
education to Kabir. But since his early childhood Kabir snowed a remarkable inclination
towards religion.
He became inquisitive to know of the mysteries surrounding life and death and particularly
about God. He concluded that there should be no differences among religions. Hence he
met and discussed about religion with both Hindu and Muslim saints and as a result he was
deeply attracted towards religion.
The relevance of a certain fact depend on its utility at any given time, but he who his inner
eyes opened reveals the ‘truth’ for all time and that ‘truth’ remains relevant always
because ‘truth’ is eternal. It never changes. The message from a true saint is for every age.
The land of India produced such a saint named Kabir. The beauty of India is that she has
so many things to give to the world. That is why Max Muller (German-born philologist)
wrote: ‘If I were to look over the whole world to find out the country most richly endowed
with all the wealth, power, and beauty that nature can bestow in some part a very paradise
on earth- I should point to India.
TEACHINGS OF SAINT KABIR DAS JI
Kabir denounced the caste system. He said that there should be no discrimination on the
basis of caste. He rejected the authority of both the Veda and the Koran. He laid great
emphasis on the equality of a men. He preached a religion of love which aimed at
promoting unity amongst all castes and creeds.
Bhai re dou jagadish kahan se aye, kahu kaune bauraya, allah ram karima kesho
hari hajart nam dharaya.
“O brother, tell me from where two gods came? Who made you mad? Allah, Ram,
Karima, Kesho, Hari, Hajart are all names of the same God.’’
Ram rahima ekai hai re, kahe karo larai
“Don’t fight, Brother! Ram and Rahim are one’’.
Ko hindu ko turk kahawai, ek jani pe rahiye.
“Who is Hindu or who is Muslim? All have to live on the same earth’’.
Hindu kahe mohi ram piyara, turuk kahe rahimana, apas me dou lari lari muye,
maram na kahu jana.
“Hindu says that Ram is dear to him, and the Muslim says its Rahiman. Both fight
between themselves and die, and do not know the secret.’’
This one of his teachings is very relevant to our time and also forever. Fighting in the
name of religion is not accepted. He showed the path of love and harmony. He was also
opposed to dividing people by caste and creed.
Ek bunda se shrishti rachi hai, ko brahman ko sudra
“All are from the same Source then who is Brahmin and who is Shudra.’’
All these teachings are relevant now more than ever because of intolerance of religions,
castes and creeds. The relevance of his teachings is that he has given hope to the common
people for God realization. He taught that God is dwelling in you – in your own heart. It
is not necessary to go to the forest to do austerity to realize God. If you will clean your
heart, you can realize God within yourself. He emphasized the fact that every person must
have to be of good morals and good character. He said that there is no greater person than
one having good character.
3) LOVE:
Love for all was Kabir’s principal tenet. He emphasized that love was the only medium
which could bind the entire human kind in an unbreakable bond of fraternity. Kabir
detested the frivolities and rituals in Hinduism and Islam for, these could never bind
together mankind. Hence he advised all to give up hatred and perpetuate love for one and
all.
4) GOD:
God was the focal point of Kabir’s religion and Kabir addressed him in different names. In
his opinion God alone was Ram, Rahim, Govind, Allah, Khuda, Hari etc. But for Kabir,
‘Saheb’ was his favorite name. He said god was everywhere and His domain is unlimited.
God was pure, sacred, existing, without form, light, endless and inseparatable. Hence God
was all powerful and he could only be worshipped through love and devotion. In whatever
name one addresses Him, God is one and has no second. Hence Kabir preached
Monotheism.
5) SIMPLICITY: Saint Kabir prays to God of giving wealth to take care of self as well
as the guest.
6) TEACHER:
In Kabir’s dictum the Teacher or ‘Guru’ has been accorded the prime position. The teacher
according to him was the incarnation of God. Kabirs had this realization only when he
came in contact with Ramananda. It was the guidance of a teacher that led man in the
proper direction and helped him in developing the right insight.
“Guru Govind Dou Khade Kaku Lagun Pai Balihari Guru Apane Jin Govind Diyu
Batal”
It means —”Both Guru and Govinda are before me. Whom shall I pay respect first?
I shall pay respect first to Guru because through him I have realised Govind”.
“Kabir is an intrepid path-finder, the great pioneer of the unity of Hindu and Muslim
communities of India and the apostle of faith of Humanity who taught that the Divine
disclosed itself in the human race as a whole.”
Thus Kabir did not establish any separate religious sect. Both Hindus and Muslims were
his followers and came to be known as Kabirpanthis. His views and teachings, challenged
and rejected by the upper castes, were largely accepted by the lower strata of the society
and later on some of his hymns were incorporated in the Adi-granth of the Sikhs.
Kabir was the first saint to reconcile Hinduism with Islam. In the words of Yugalanand,
“The Hindu resorts to the temple and the Muslim to the mosque, but Kabir goes to the
place where both are known. These two religions are like two branches in the middle of
which there is a sprout surpassing them. Kabir has taken the higher path abandoning the
customs of the two.”
Kabir tried determinedly to bring about unity amongst Hindus and Muslims. Very soon his
religious views were propagated in every nook and comer of India. Kabir died in 1518
A.D. Legends speak that both Hindus and Muslims quarreled over his dead body. But
when the shroud was removed from over his body, there were only a bunch of flowers
instead of his corpse. The assembled people were taken aback by this miracle. Hindus
collected some flowers and cremated them at Varanasi while the Muslims took the
remaining flowers for burial at Maghar in the Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh.
