Symbol I V X L C D M
Value In Hindu Arabic System 1 5 10 50 100 500 1000
Rules to be follow while writing Roman Numerals-

When a symbol is placed after the symbol of II= 1+1=2

a greater value, the values are added. VI =5+1=6 , LX =50+10=60
A symbol can be repeated for three times III=1+1+1=3 while 4 = IIII
only . LXXX=50+10+10+10=80
Only symbols that can be repeated are VVV=15
I,X,C,M
If a symbol is placed before the symbol of a IV=5-1=4
greater value , the smaller value is XL=50-10=40
subtracted from the greater one. XC=100-10=90 , CM=1000-100=900
Only symbols that can be subtracted are VXX=15
I,X,C,M. I can be subtracted from V and X, IV=4 ,IX=9
X can be subtracted from L and C, C can be XL=40 ,XC=90
subtracted from D and M CD=400, CM=900

Class Work :
Q1. Write the following in Roman Numerals .

a) 983 =900+80+3=(1000-100) +(50+10+10+10)+3

= C M L X X X III =CMLXXXIII

b) 804 = 800 + 4 = 500+100+100+100 +4=DCCCIV

c) 1481 = 1000 +400 +80 +1 =1000+(500-100)+50+10+10+10+1
= M C D L X X X I =MCDLXXXI
d) 1000=M
e) 2950=1000+1000+(1000 -100)+5

= M M C M V = MMCMV

f)160 =100+50+10= CLX

Q2.Write the following in Hindu Arabic numerals .

a) CLXX = 100 +50 +10+10 =170

b) LXVII = 50+10+5+1+1=67
c) DL =500+50 =550
d) MCML= M C M L
= 1000+(1000 - 100)+50=1950

e) LXIX =50+10+9=69
f) CLXIX= C + L+ X + IX=100+50+10+9=169
g) LXXVII=100+10+10+7=127
h) DCL=500+100+50=650

Q3. Word Problems.

a) The Population of Town A is 3832 & that of Town B is 6594.Which town has more
population ? Write it in Roman numeral.
Ans:
The Population of Town A is 3832=1000+1000+1000+500+300+30+2
= MMMDCCCXXXII
The Population of Town B is 6594 =5000+1000+500+(100-10)+4
=VMDXCIV
As 3832 < 6594 population of Town B is more.
Note :
V X L C D M
5000 10000 50000 1000000 500000 1000000

b) In a car race , Neha scores LXVI points & Raju scores XXV points .Who wins the
race ?
Ans :
Points Scored by Neha = LXVI = 50+10+6 =66
Points Scored by Raju = XXV = 10+10+5=25
As 66 > 25, Neha wins the race .
c) Which is the larger number between MDCLXXIV & MDCCLXXIX.
Ans :
MDCLXXIV =1000+500+100+50+10+10+4=1674
MDCCLXXIX=1000+500+100+100+50+10+10+9=1779
As 1779 > 1674 , therefore MDCLXXIV > MDCCLXXIX
