Module One
Principles of Quality Management and Patient Safety in Healthcare
Leadership

Course Description

This introductory module is designed to provide participants with basic concepts upon which the body of knowledge of Healthcare
Quality Management and Patient Safety have been established. This module is the foundation on which the other course modules
are built. Participants will learn the basic principles, concepts, definitions related to quality management and improvement, the role
of leadership in promoting quality and a culture of safety, how to establish a culture of learning, managing change, and how to
develop a quality management program. They will be introduced to the use of the A3 form and developing SMART objectives,
which will be required for their capstone project. Every module will use a variety of methods to engage participants in the learning
process. Specifically, each didactic session will be complemented with small group exercises to ensure participants develop
competencies in applying concepts and in using methods and tools.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, participants will acquire knowledge and skills as reflected in objectives and deliverables for the following topics:

1. Fundamentals of Healthcare Improvement and Patient Safety

a) Origins, Definitions of Quality and Principles of Quality


• Understand how quality is defined
• Understand the historical origins of quality management
• Understand the role of standardization in achieving quality
• Develop working knowledge of Deming’s 14 principles for quality management
• Understand the quality trilogy
• Understand the basic principles and dimensions of quality
• Understand the critical procedures in a quality management system

b) Cost of Poor Quality

• Develop working knowledge of how to calculate the cost of quality

2. Leadership in Healthcare Improvement

a) Defining Leadership in Healthcare

b) Leadership Role in Quality


• Understand the absolute requirements of leaders in promoting quality and patient safety

3. Culture of Safety

• Understand the role of safety in achieving quality

4. Principles and Methods of Change Management

• Acquire skill to identify two ways to manage change
• Acquire skill of how to perform a stakeholder analysis
• Acquire skill to know how to apply different change models to the daily operations

5. Quality Management Program

• Working knowledge of how to assess organization’s capacity for learning
• Understand need for high reliability in healthcare
• Understand key characteristics of Highly Reliable Organizations (HRO)
• Working knowledge of strategies to embed HRO characteristics in organization

8. SMART Goals

• Competent in writing SMART goals

9. Capstone Project
• Understand the requirements of Capstone Project
• Understand Project format including A3 Report
• Competent in using framework for organizing project

Small Group Sessions


To stimulate and guide group discussions, faculty will provide participants with a series of relevant discussions, methods, tools, and
case scenarios. When appropriate to deeply understand concepts and methods, faculty will use instruction videos. In addition, to
ensure competency in using quality management tools, faculty will engage participants in completing a series of small group exercises
