due to the release of (B) gas in the reaction. Here, A and B are
(a) A : Oxalic acid : B : CO2 (b) A : Tartaric acid : B : O2
(c) A : Succinic acid : B : H2 (d) A : Tartaric acid : B : CO2

2. When CO2 is passed through lime water, it turns milky. the milkiness in due to formation of
(a) CaCO3 (b) Ca(OH)2 (c) H2O (d) CO2

3. When aqueous sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) reacts with HCl(aq), it gives

(a) NaOH, H2(g) and CO2(g) (b) NaCl, H 2O and CO2(g)
(c) NaHCO3 , H2(g) and CO2(g) (d) NaHCO3 , H2O and CO2(g)

4. Consider the following reaction: Here, A,B,C and D respectively are :

(a) A = Conc. HCl; B = Fe; C = NH4OH; D = PbO

(b) A = Conc. H2SO4 ; B = Fe; C = NH4OH;
D = Pb(NO3)2
(c) A = Conc. H2SO4 B = Fe; C = NH3 ;
D = Pb(NO3)2
(d) A = Conc. HCl; B = Fe; C = NH3 ; D = PbO

5. You are having five solutions A,B,C,D and E with pH values as follows: A = 1.8, B = 7, C = 8.5,
D = 8 and E = 5 Which solution would be most likely to liberate hydrogen with magnesium
powder? (a) Solution A and B (b) Solution A (c) Solution C (d) All of the above

6. On prolong supply of CO2(g) in lime solution (limewater), it is observed that

(a) lime solution changes to gaseous state (b) the milkiness of lime water disappears
(c) the milkiness of lime water changes from white to red.
(d) the colour of lime water becomes black
7. Aqueous solution of copper sulphate reacts with aqueous ammonium hydroxide solution to
give. (a) brown precipitate (b) pale blue precipitate
(c) white precipitate (d) green precipitate

8. Bleaching powder gives smell of chlorine because it-

(a) is unstable (b) gives chlorine on exposure to atmosphere
(c) is a mixture of chlorine and slaked lime (d) contains excess of chlorine

9. CuO + X CuSO4 + H2O Here (X) is- (a) CuSO4 (b) HCl (c) H2SO4 (d) HNO3

10. An aqueous solution turns red litmus solution blue. Excess addition of which of the following
solution would reverse the change?
(a) Baking powder (b) Lime (c) Ammonium hydroxide solution (d) Hydrochloric acid
DIRECTION : the following questions, a statement of assertion (A) is followed by a statement of
reason (R). Mark the correct choice as:
(a) Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true and reason (R) is the correct explanation of
assertion(A).
(b) Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true but reason (R) is not the correct explanation of
assertion (A).
(c) Assertion (A) is true but reason (R) is false.
(d) Assertion (A) is false but reason (R) is true.
(e) Both Assertion and Reason are false.

11. Assertion : On adding H2SO4 to water the resulting aqueous solution get corrosive.
Reason : Hydronium ions are responsible for corrosive action.
12. Assertion : HCl produces hydronium ions (H3O )+ and chloride ions (Cl-) in aqueous solution.
Reason : In presence of water, basic give H+ ions.
13. Assertion : pH of ammonium chloride solution is in acidic range.
Reason : Solution of a salt of weak base and strong acid is acidic.
14. Assertion : The aqueous solutions of glucose and alcohol do not show acidic character.
Reason : Aqueous solutions of glucose and alcohol do not give H+ ions.
15. Assertion : While dissolving an acid or base in water, the acids must always be added slowly
to water with constant stirring.
Reason : Dissolving an acid on a base in water in highly exothermic reaction.
3 Mark Question
16. A milkman adds a very small amount of baking soda to fresh milk”
(i) Why does he shift the pH of the fresh from ‘6’ to slightly alkaline?
(ii) What do you expect to observe when this milk comes to boil?
(iii) Why does this milk take a long time to set as cur?

17. A compound X of sodium form a white powder. It is a constituent of baking powder and is
used in some antacid prescriptions. When heated, X gives out of a gas and steam. The gas forms
a white precipitate with lime water. Write the chemical formula and name of X and the chemical
equation for its decomposition on heating. What is its role in baking powder and in antacids.

18. What do you mean by water of crystallization of a substance? Describe an activity to show
that blue copper sulphate crystals contain water of crystallization

19.(a) Equal lengths of magnesium ribbon are taken in test tubes ‘A’ and ‘B’. Hydrochloric acid
(HCI) is added to test-tube A while acetic acid (CH3COOH) is added to test-tube ‘B’. In which
test tube will the fizzing occur more vigorously and why?

solution of sodium hydroxide
20.(a) How can washing soda be obtained from baking soda? Name an industrial use of washing
soda other than washing clothes
(b) Identify the compound of calcium which is used for plastering of fractured bones. With
the help of chemical equation, describe how this compound is prepared. What special
precaution should be taken during the preparation of this compound?
