Studio Activity 2 Build An Atom
Studio Activity 2 Build An Atom
I. Objectives
II. Discussion
Atom is the basic unit of an element that can enter into chemical combination, and it is consists
of electrons and nucleus. Nucleus is located at the center of the atom, and essentially all the mass of the
atom. It contains protons and neutrons. Electrons are the negatively charged particles. Protons and
neutrons are the positively charged particles and uncharged dense particles respectively. Ions, on the
other hand, contain charges, which can either be a positive or a negative charge. Cation contains
positive charge, while anion contains the opposite charge.
III. Procedure
1. Go to the logo of Studio Activities in the home page of our course in canvas.
2. The link will redirect you to modules and click “Studio 2: Build an Atom”.
3. Click the “atom”
“ATOM”
1. Tick the box to create a check mark in “stable/unstable” in the show chart
2. Click the plus sign in the net charge chart
3. Click the plus sign in the mass number chart
4. You can drag the spheres to the orbits to create an atomic structure
5. There is a color coding for the spheres: Peach color is for proton, silver color is for neutron, and
blue color is for electron.
6. Complete the table below
7. Use the net charge chart to determine the target charge. Use the mass # chart to get the value
of the mass number. The word “unstable” or “stable” signifies the number of neutrons needed.

V. Questions
1. In atoms, why should be the number of protons be equal to the number of electrons?
An atom contains equal number of protons and electrons. If an atom loses or gains electron, it is
considered as an ion. Even if the element contains different numbers of protons and neutron, it doesn’t
matter as far as the numbers of electrons and protons are the same, atom will still be an atom.
2. How will you be able to distinguish if the ion is a cation or anion based on the number of protons and
number of electrons?
We can be able to distinguish if the ion is a cation or anion based on the number of protons and
electrons. When the protons are more than the electrons, it is considered as cations because it is
accordingly giving a net positive charge, and for a cation to be achieved. And for the anion, it will be the
other way around, that the electrons are more than the protons, accordingly giving it a negative charge,
and for that to be achieved.
VI. Conclusion
Atoms can be distinguish from one another by their number of protons. For every atom, there is
a specific number of protons that it contain and each time you add protons to it, it will turn into a
different atom. Also, atoms in nature are neutral and once they gain or lose electron they be charged
forming ions. This ions are either positively-charged (cation) or negatively-charged (anion) depending on
the difference in electron and proton.
