1.4 Option Settings

We will set up some recommended item settings when using AutoCAD.

 Hide drawing grid

In the Status Bar click Display drawing grid to turn the drawing grid off.

 Enable Polar Tracking

In the Status Bar click Restrict cursor to specified angles to turn Polar Tracking on.

 Enable Object Snap

In the Status Bar click the down arrow[▼] and then select Object Snap Settings to display the Drafting Settings dialog
box.

In the Object Snap tab click the ‘Select All’ button to enable all Object Snap modes.

AutoCAD Training Guide Book

Object Snap is a drawing aid that recognizes particular points of an object. Using Object Snap helps you easily select
precise locations on an object.

 Automatically add annotation scales

In the Status Bar click Add scales to annotative objects when the annotation scale changes to enable automatically
adding annotation scales.

In AutoCAD you create the drawing in full 1:1 scale in the Model Space and prepare the drawing for printing, by
configuring the drawing in multiple scales, in the Paper Space (Layout). Automatically add annotation scales is a
function that automatically adjusts the scale to the size of the paper when configuring the dimensions and text for
printing.

2 Layers
We will learn the following :
 About layers
 Layer setup

2.1 What are Layers

Layers allow you to organize objects into groups. You can manage individual elements like ‘Frame’, ‘Shape’,
‘Dimension’, and ‘Construction Line’ and others, which makes drawing easier and reduces mistakes.

However, there is a difference between layers in AutoCAD versus layers in other software programs. Unlike many other
software programs, all objects are shown on the same level in AutoCAD, as opposed to higher and lower levels as they
are in other programs.

2.2 Confirm Layer Settings

In the Home tab, select Layer Properties to display the dialog box.

Here we can see that the following layers have been created.

To see the steps to add layers, please see the contents in Appendix: Manufaturing Template Creation.

In the Home tab select Draw > Circle > Center, Radius. Move the cursor to any point on top of the previously drawn
circle.
Once the center point appears, select that center point, type ‘2.5’ and press ‘Enter’ to draw a circle with a radius of 2.5
millimeters inside of the first circle.

3.3 Design Changes

We will change the diameter of both ends of the cylinder to 8 millimeters, and the diameter of the center cylinder to 7
millimeters.
Select Modify > Stretch and click the open space above the upper right corner. Enclose the object’s entire upper side
and click again. Press ‘Enter’ to confirm.

16
AutoCAD Training Guide Book

Select any point as the base point. This time we will select the Endpoint of the square.

Move the cursor straight up, type ‘1’ and press ‘Enter’ to confirm.

Repeat the steps to stretch the lower side by 1 millimeter.

To the right of the front view drawing, we will next change the diameter of the outer circle to 8 millimeters, and change
the diameter of the inner circle to 7 millimeters.
Without any commands active in the drawing area, select the outer circle.

17
VOST, Inc.

Select any one of the four points that appear, and move the cursor to display the radius. Type ‘4’ to change the radius to

construction line.

25
VOST, Inc.

In the Home tab click Layer and switch to Outline.

Select Draw > Line and choose any four points to create a rectangle.

When utilizing geometric and dimensional constraints we first create the basic shape of the object, and later adjust the
sizing.

26
AutoCAD Training Guide Book

Select Draw > Line and draw a trapezoidal shape directly on top of the rectangle we just drew.

Continuing, select Draw > Line add the following shapes on top of the trapezoid, starting from lower to higher, to create
the basic outline.

27
VOST, Inc.

In the Parametric tab select Geometric > Symmetric to make the left and right sides symmetrical about the vertical
construction line.

① ③ ②

With Symmetric the line selected second will move and be made symmetric with the line selected first.

The upper rectangle is already symmetric as it shares its endpoints with the inverted trapezoid below it. Therefore if you
try to add a symmetry contraint to it an over-constrain error message will be displayed.

28
AutoCAD Training Guide Book

Select Geometric > Coincident to make the midpoint of the base coincident with the reference point of the template.

29
VOST, Inc.

In the Parametric tab select Dimensional > Linear to attach the dimensional constraints as below :

Dimensions in parametric drawing are used to adjust the size of the figure, and thus are different from dimensions used
to annotate the drawing.

Dimensional > Linear identifies the Endpoint of the line that is highlighted. Therefore, ensure you are correctly
identifying the line you want to select.

30

Select Layer > Match Layer to move unnecessary lines in the cross section to the Hidden Layer layer.

Select objects : Select the four lines, press ‘Enter’

Select object on destination layer : ‘N’, press ‘Enter’

Select Hidden Layer from the list, click ‘OK’

When using geometric or dimensional constraints, deleting the line will also delete the associated constraint.
Therefore,we will move these lines to a layer prepared for hidden lines.

37
VOST, Inc.

For the cross section, we need to express the inner hidden lines as outline lines.
Select Layer > Match Layer to move these inner hidden lines to the Outline layer.

5 Design changes using parametric drawing

We will learn the following :
 How to link parameters
 How to change the design using parameters

5.1 Linking parameters

In the Parametric tab select Manage > Parameters Manager to open the Parameters Manager dialog box.

39
VOST, Inc.

Click Value to sort the parameters by value. We will create a relational expression making the inner diameter of the
base equal to 3/4 of the outer diameter (d2), and the diameter of the upper neck line equal to 1/2 of the outer diameter
(d2). In the Expression column enter a formula including the dimension name.

40
AutoCAD Training Guide Book

Continuing, we will link the dimensions of the cross section to the dimensions of the front view. In the Expression
column of the cross section’s dimensions enter the name of the corresponding front view’s dimension.

41
VOST, Inc.

By changing the length of ‘d1’ from ‘40’ to ‘35’ the inner diameters and upper neck lines of both the linked front view
and cross section will be simultaneously modified.

In the case where changes to dimension values cause the object to lose its structure, there are not enough geometric
constraints attached.
Return to before the change to the dimension value, and in the Parametric tab select Geometric > Auto Constrain. With
the entire object selected, the missing constraints will automatically be attached.

42

In order to use the hidden Multiline command, we need to display the Menu Bar.
In the Quick Access Toolbar click [▼] and select Show Menu Bar.

In the Home tab click Layer and switch to Wall.

76
AutoCAD Training Guide Book

In the Menu Bar select Draw > Multiline.

Multiline is a command that draws multiple parallel lines at once. The default setting is two lines. We can simplify
drawing walls with this command.

Multiline is not available in LT. In LT please use the DLINE command.

Right click to open the shortcut menu and select Justification.

77
VOST, Inc.

For ‘Enter justification type’ select ‘Zero’

Justification determines how the multiline lines are offset from their definition points. With a justification of zero, the
definition point will be between the two lines. Therefore, by selecting the base line as the definition point we can
create walls by simply tracing over the base line.

Once more, right click to open the shortcut menu. This time select Scale.

Scale controls the width of the two multililne lines. This tiime we will use it to set the width of the wall.

78
AutoCAD Training Guide Book

For ‘Enter mline scale’ enter ‘200’.

Select the intersection points of the base line to draw the wall.

79
VOST, Inc.

After selecting the first three points, selecting the last point will cause the first point to be selected, resulting in overlap.
We will execute the Close command in the shortcut menu here, and a closed multiline will be drawn.

Once again, select Multiline, and select the intersection point of the multiline and the base line to draw the center wall.
