FLUIDS AND ELECTROLYTES

Electrolytes and fluids are essential in human body with its right amount and right food taken the
body will enable to work right as its function. But they are a lot of differences to the both. For instance
electrolytes are the minerals and fluids that carry electric charge either negative or positive charge that
helps our body in dealing or controlling the right amount of water in our body, to know the acidity of our
blood through pH basis, and for a healthy muscle function. On the other hand, fluids are either a gas or
liquid substance that tends to flow or conform to the shape of the container in which it is kept. There are
two major components of a fluids the intracellular (ICF) which means inside the cells and the other one is
the extracellular (ECF) or outside the cells fluids also has two shifts in distribution the intravascular (IVF:
plasma) and the interstitial (ISF) meaning the fluid spaces around the cells.
Electrolytes are involved in many essential processes in your body. They play a role in
conducting nervous impulses, contracting muscles, keeping you hydrated and regulating your body’s pH
levels. Therefore, you need to get an adequate amount of electrolytes from your diet to keep your body
functioning as it should. Electrolyte is also considered as the umbrella term for particles that carry a
positive or negative electric charge. In nutrition, the term refers to essential minerals found in your blood,
sweat and urine. When these minerals dissolve in a fluid, they form electrolytes positive or negative ions
used in metabolic processes. Electrolytes found in your body include the sodium, potassium, chloride,
calcium, magnesium, phosphate, and bicarbonate. These electrolytes are required for various bodily
processes, including proper nerve and muscle function, maintaining acid-base balance and keeping you
hydrated.
While on the other hand our body is composed of 60% water which is a fluid and there are also
biological fluids include blood, urine, semen (seminal fluid), vaginal secretions, cerebrospinal fluid,
synovial fluid, pleural fluid (pleural lavage), pericardial fluid, peritoneal fluid, amniotic fluid, saliva,
nasal fluid, otic fluid, gastric fluid, breast milk, as well as cell culture supernatants. The human body is
basically a collection of cells grouped together into organ systems and bathed in fluids, most notably the
blood. The intracellular fluid is the fluid contained within cells. The extracellular fluid the fluid outside
the cells is divided into that found within the blood and that found outside the blood; the latter fluid is
known as the interstitial fluid. These fluids are not simply water but contain varying amounts of solutes
(electrolytes and other bioactive molecules).
Therefore, an electrolyte (sodium chloride, for example) is defined as any molecule that in
solution separates into its ionic components and is capable of conducting an electric current. Cations are
electrolytes that migrate toward the negative pole of an electric field; anions migrate toward the positive
pole. And the fluids in our body is an overall fluid in our body that is needed to function properly. Both
electrolytes and fluids are vital in our everyday survival and for staying healthy with the right diet and
calculations of our food intake we can achieve a healthy and purposeful life in that way also we can help
our loved ones in knowing the basic knowledge of the fluids and electrolytes purpose in our body and its
benefits to us when we are able to complete our daily amount to take in.
