This course “Studies in Media” is designed for students of semester 4 at the department
of English. It is an introduction to media, communication and other related concepts. The
classes are based on theoretical and analytical insights. During the semester, we will explore
different media theories such as Media representation, media language, audience, and
institutions. Students will be exposed to different theoretical frameworks and conceptual tools
which they can ultimately use in analyzing and reading specific media texts such as TV
commercials, advertising, films, billboards, tabloid newspapers, soap operas, and newspapers.

Course Objectives

 To define ‘media’ broadly and differentiate between different media outlets including oral,
print, performance, photographic, broadcast, cinematic and digital.
 To know how media influence the process of intercultural communication
 To become more literate and critical consumers and producers of media
 To make students develop critical thinking and analytical insight towards media.

 Course Volume

 Classes begin on the 15th February and end by the 24th April.
 Hours of Teaching per week: 1 hour and 30 minutes
 Total sessions: 11

Course Requirements

 Attendance and active participation in class discussions


 Assigned reading and homework must be done on time
 Extra-curricular assignment ( 20 minutes presentation)
 Writing reviews of reading materials (elective)
