OBJECTIVE: Ability to recognize diodes in various physical forms. Ability to determine the
diode polarity and to understand the need for correct connection. To obtain knowledge of the
forward/current characteristic and the condition voltage for germanium and silicon types.
APPARATUS:
Basic Electricity and Electronics Module 12-200-B
Power supply Unit, 0 to 20V variable dc regulated( eg. Feedback Teknikit Console 92-300).
PRACTICAL 1
Procedure
Fig 7.
CIRCUI CURRENT(mA)
T
Fig 7. 2.021
4. Now switch off the power supply and reverse the 1N4007GP diode to give the circuit of
Fig 9.
Fig 9.
6. Read the new value of diode current and record it in the second row of your table
CIRCUI CURRENT(mA)
T
Fig 9 0.00067
OBSERVATION: I observed that the diode conducted to a very little extent when
reversed biased
When the diode was connected the opposite way,the current measured was much
smaller
The conduction voltage of silicon diodes is about 0.6V while that of germanium diodes is
about 0.2V
A forward biased diode has its anode connected to the positive voltage supply while a
reverse biased diode has its cathode connected to the positive voltage supply
a) Reverse bias
b) Forward bias
PRACTICAL 2
PROCEDURE
1. Construct the circuit of fig 13 and apply the method used earlier in the assignment to
find Vd and If
Fig 13.
2. Calculate the power dissipation of the diode and back to see if becomes warm to touch
after a few minutes
Power(W)=IV
P=(9.062 *10-3)(0.594)
P=5.383*10-3W
PRECAUTIONS
1. I ensured all connections were made according to the diagrams provided.
2. I ensured I stopped the simulation before making any changes to the circuit.
CONCLUSION
From the experiment I was able to confirm a few things;
1. A diode conducts when it’s anode is positive relative to its cathode and does not conduct
when voltage is reversed.
