Supported Units in HD Subrack

The HD subrack accommodates following units (Figure 2-2):

Network Termination Units

One or two NT units terminating the connection with a network (ATM, EMAN) or with a
hub ASAM.
These NT units are based on the GANT-C/D motherboard, a Generic ATM Network
Termination (GANT) unit. The daughterboard, a specific Physical Layer Interface
Module (PLIM) , determines the type of interface used: STM-4/OC-12c or
STM-1/OC-3c.
• The SANT unit for optical STM-1/OC-3c links.
• The SBNT unit for optical STM-4/OC-12c links.
These optical units do not require an applique for connection. However, the SANC
applique can be used when the LAN/BITS interface has to be permanently accessible.
NT boards are equipped in the first subrack of the ASAM system (the other, subordinate,
subracks contain extender units).
They are inserted in the NT/EXT slots (slot numbers 30 and 31).

NT Appliques
Optionally, one NT applique providing BITS/LAN interface:
• SANC applique for SANT/SBNT unit(s).
This board is inserted in the NTI/O slot above the NT units.

Extender Units
One or two extender units, type ADSE, extending the ASAM configuration over several
subracks
In each subordinate subrack, the ADSE unit(s) replace(s) the NT unit(s) of the first
subrack.
ADSE units are inserted in the NT/EXT slots (slot numbers 30, 31).

3FE 20884 AAAA TQZZA Edition 04 Released 9 / 154

management.
This unit is equipped in the first subrack of each rack and in each subrack that houses (an)
additional NT unit(s), e.g. when different network elements are located in the same rack.
The ACU board is inserted in the ACU slot (slot number 29).

Line Interface Modules

The HD subrack accommodates different types of Line Interface Module (LIM):
• Up to sixteen DSL-LIMs supporting a number of DSL subscriber lines.
• 12-line ADLT units (HD).
Each unit has its own PSPC splitter or applique, FCON, CTAP. A subrack fully
equipped with only ADLT units and associated splitters/appliques supports 192
ADSL lines (16x12 lines).
• 12-line SHLT or SMLT units (HD).
Each unit has its own applique, FCON or CTAP. A subrack fully equipped with
only SHLT/SMLT units and associated appliques supports 192 SHDSL lines
(16x12 lines).
• Up to sixteen LIMs driving subtending links to Remote-ASAM or Customer Premises
Equipment (CPE) .
• E1LT units, each supporting a subtending 4xE1 link to/from a subtended node (e.g.
R-ASAM) or E1 CPE.
Each unit requires an E1LC applique for connection. A subrack fully equipped
with E1LT units and associated appliques supports 64 E1 lines (16x4 lines).
• Up to sixteen D3/E3LT units, each supporting a subtending DS3/E3 link to/from a R4.2
remote ASAM. Each unit requires a D3/E3LS applique.
• Up to three LIMs driving optical links to a subtending Network Element (NE) .
• SALT units supporting STM-1/OC-3c links.
This STM-1/OC-3c LIM has an IQ-based and HCL-based variant. no applique is
required for connection as optical cables are directly connected at the unit.
• SBLT units supporting STM-4/OC-12c links.
This STM-4/OC-12c LIM is HCL-based, it requires no applique for connection
as optical cables are directly connected at the unit.
The number of SALT and SBLT units per HD subrack is limited to three to keep
compliancy with EMC requirements and, because of fiber handling and routing
restrictions, these units can only be installed in the three rightmost LT slots,
LT14, LT15 and LT16.
The HCL-based LIMs can only be installed in the main subrack, as there are no
HCL extenders available.

10 / 154 Released 3FE 20884 AAAA TQZZA Edition 04

2 — Subracks

Splitters, LIM Appliques

Up to sixteen splitters or LIM appliques, one per equipped LIM.
• PSPC splitters for ADLT units.
• CTAP, Connect Trough APpliques for ADLT, SHLT or SMLT units.

The splitter or applique is inserted in the AP slot above the LIM served.

RU Extension Modules
A number of Remote Unit Extension Module (RUEM) , each connecting to a Remote Unit
(RU).
Each RUEM LIM drives one optical link to a Remote Unit (RU) . On this RU up to 12,
24, 36 or 48 physical VDSL ports can be planned to support remote subscribers. A
RUEM with subtending RU can be considered as a VDSL-type LIM with the planned
number of VDSL ports.
Each RUEM LIM is assigned a physical and a logical mnemonic:
• The physical mnemonic (RUEM-A) identifies the physical RUEM board (HW level).
• The logical mnemonic (RUEM-A) identifies a specific functionality of the RUEM
board. This functionality depends on the kind of xDSL modules (ADSL, VDSL, ...)
installed in the RU. The logical mnemonic is required to allow planning the RUEM
LIM and managing the SW loading of the RUEM/RU.

Different logical mnemonics can be linked to the same physical mnemonic.

A RUEM board can be inserted in any of the 16 LT slots. It requires no applique.

Server Modules, Gateways

A number of Server Modules or Gateways supporting links to a network (EMAN, IP).
• Up to two IPGW units (IP Gateways).
Each Gateway contains an IPGW unit supporting four Ethernet links to/from the IP
network and an IPGS applique providing the connection. A subrack equipped with
two IP Gateways (the maximum number possible in an ASAM) supports eight
Ethernet links (2x4 links).
IP Gateways can only be equipped in hub-ASAM. It is recommended to install them
in the first subrack, which contains the NT unit. The double-board IPGW can be
inserted in any of the eight LT slot pairs (see Figure 2-3). The accompanying IPGS
applique is mounted in the left AP slot above the IPGW unit. The right AP slot has to
remain empty, it's reserved for the redundant applique, if any (future use).
• Up to three GELT units (GE-LSMs) providing access to an Ethernet Metropolitan
Area Network (EMAN) through a Gigabit Ethernet (GE) link.
An optional IPGS applique provides 10BASE-T interface for outband management of
the GELT unit.
The GELT unit must be installed in the main subrack of the ASAM, as there are no
HCL extenders available. The GELT board can be inserted in any of the 16 LT slots,
the IPGS applique, if any, occupies the AP slot above it.

PWRIO Unit
One PWRI/O unit.
This unit is always present at delivery, it is installed in the PWR I/O slot at subrack
assembly.

Fan Unit
One FAN unit.
Each subrack has to be equipped with a FAN unit, which is installed in the fan area. The
fan unit in the lowest subrack has to be equipped with a dustfilter (see "Rack
Configuration").
The main subrack of an ASAM system must be equipped with an AFAN-H unit, this unit
contains eight fans providing sufficient air cooling for the NT units present. If not,
overheating NT units could cause fan failure and system breakdown.
Other subracks in the ASAM can be equipped with AFAN-G or AFAN-H units (when
considering migration from R4.x systems).

Combining Different LSMs in the HD Subrack

The HD subrack can simultaneously house different LIMs and Line Server Modules
(LSMs):
• DSL-LIMs (ADSL, SHDSL, ...)
• LIMs driving subtending links (STM-1, STM-4, E1, E3, DS3, ...)
• RUEM-LIMs driving RUs
• GE and IP Servers/Gateways.

However, certain LSM types cannot be combined in the same crossover slot pair (P1 to
P8, see Figure 2-2):
• ADLT with E1LT accompanied by an E1LC applique with Backplane Access (BPA),
because of crosstalk problems
• IPGW with any other LSM type, because the double-board IPGW unit occupies the
two LT slots.

Redundancy in the HD Subrack

Redundancy is optionally applied. Software supports it for certain units and there are
hardware provisions to provide more in the future. Table 2-3 gives an overview per
release.

Table 2-3 Redundancy Support in HD Subrack

Release 1+1 NT 1+1 LSM 1:N LSM

EPS EPS/APS

From R5.1.10 on ✓ ✓ -- --

1+1 NT Redundancy
The 1+1 NT redundancy is optionally applied by using a second NT unit as a standby in
slot position 31.
In case of a SDH NT board (SANT-G/H, SBNT-A/B), following 1+1 NT/EXT chain
redundancy configurations are supported from R5.1.10 onwards
• 1+1 NT/EXT chain redundancy: Equipment Protection Switching (EPS) only
configuration:
The system will only switch-over the extension chain without having the network link
protection coupled to it (=APS or the so called facility protection switchover not
supported). In this case, only one optical link will be directly connected to one of the
pair NT boards.
• 1+1 NT/EXT chain redundancy: EPS/Automatic Protection Switching (APS) coupled
configuration:
The system will switch-over the extension and the network link in a coupled way,
meaning that an extender chain switch-over implies a link switch-over and vice-versa.
In this configuration, the optical link is also duplicated (the optical link is directly
connected to the NT board, one optical link to each NT).
Optionally, a pair of redundant NT boards supports EPS and APS.

1+1 LSM Redundancy

The 1+1 LSM equipment redundancy is not supported but there are HW provisions for
future application.

1:N LSM Redundancy

The 1:N equipment redundancy is not supported, but there are HW provisions for future
application.
The backplane already provides tracks to apply 1:N redundancy for xDSL LSM (ADLT,

Combining Different LSMs in UD-Combo Subrack

The UD-Combo can simultaneously house different LIMs and LSMs:
• 24-line as well as 12-line DSL-LIMs (ADSL, SHDSL, ...)
• LIMs driving subtending links (STM-1, STM-4, DS1, E1, E3, DS3, ...)
• RUEM-LIMs driving RUs
• GE and IP Servers/Gateways.

However, certain LSMs cannot be combined in the same crossover LT slot pair (P1 to
P8, see Figure 2-4):
• ADLT with D1LT, because of crosstalk problems.
• IPGW with any other LSM type, because the double-board IPGW unit occupies the
two LT slots.

Multi-ADSL LIM
Multi-ADSL LIMs (ABLT, ...) support multi-ADSL subscriber lines. Refer to
UD-Combo subrack (Table 2-5).

Combining Different LSMs in UD Mini-RAM

The UD Mini-RAM can simultaneously house different LIMs and LSMs:
• DSL-LIMs (ADSL, SHDSL, VDSL, ...)
• LIMs driving subtending links (STM-1, E1, E3, DS3, ...)
• RUEM-LIMs driving RUs
• IP Gateways.

However, certain LSMs cannot be combined in the same crossover LT slot pair (P1 to
P2, Figure 2-7):
• ADLT with D1LT, because of crosstalk problems
• IPGW with any other LSM type, because the double-board IPGW unit occupies the
two LT slots.

Redundancy in UD Mini-RAM
Redundancy is optionally applied. Like in the HD subrack, software supports it for
certain units and there are hardware provisions to provide more in the future. Table 2-10

2.7 Extreme-Density Combo Subrack (ALTS-R)

The standard eXtreme-Density (XD) Combo subrack is supported from R5.0.20. It

accommodates XD units and several HD and UD units. Most of the NT-, EXT-, ACU-
and LT units are also used in XD-Combo subrack (the XD-Combo Line Termination area
has the same dimensions). Splitters, appliques and I/O modules applied are specific
XD-Combo units, they fit the splitter area at the rear of the XD-Combo subrack and are
higher.
The XD-Combo midplane doubles the line capacity supported by UD. It supports LIMs
serving up to 48 DSL lines.

Dimensions
The type of XD-Combo subrack applied is ALTS-R, ADSL Line Termination Shelf
(ALTS) version R. Figure 2-9 gives a front and rear view (fan unit and front cover are
included).
As shown in Figure 2-10, the XD-Combo subrack is twice as deep as the HD and UD
subracks and it has an XD-Combo MidPlane (MP) which allows installing units at the
front as well as at the rear side of the subrack. This concept facilitates inserting and
accessing units and provides more space for extreme density cabling (e.g. MDF cabling).
Table 2-11 gives the overall dimensions of the subrack and Figure 2-10 gives dimensions
of areas inside.

2.8 Space Improved XD-Combo Subrack (ALTS-R)

The SI XD-Combo subrack is the space improved version of the standard XD-Combo.
The SI XD-Combo subrack has the features of the standard XD-Combo, except that it
provides SI items:
• Provisions made for simplified cable supports to tie wrap MDF cables (CI)
• Reduced depth to foresee rack doors within 600 mm.

Dimensions
Figure 2-14 gives front and rear view of the SI XD-Combo subrack (fan unit and front
cover are included).
As the space improved subrack is less deep (576.5 instead of 591 mm), it provides more
space for cable routing. As a consequence, the SI XD-Combo rack including covers fits
within a floorspace of 600 mm x 600 mm, which complies with ETSI 300 119-2
requirements.

Supported Units in the XD Splitterless Subrack

The XD splitterless subrack accommodates following units (Figure 2-16):

Network Termination Units

One or two redundant NT units terminating the connection with a network (ATM) or with
a hub ASAM.
The NT units are based on generic motherboard GANT-C/D. The PLIM on the
daughterboard defines the type of interface terminated (STM-4/OC-12c, STM-1/OC-3c).
• The SANT unit for optical STM-1/OC-3c links.
• The SBNT unit for optical STM-4/OC-12c links.
NT boards are equipped in the first subrack of the ASAM (the other, subordinate
subracks contain extender units). They are inserted in the NT/EXT slots (numbers 30 and
31).

NT Appliques
One optional NT applique providing BITS/LAN interface.
• SANC applique for SANT or SBNT unit(s).
Optical units do not require an applique foe connection. However, SANC is used to have
LAN/BITS interface permanently accessible.
This double-board unit is inserted in the NTI/O slot at the rear side. The midplane
provides connection with the NT unit(s).

Extender Units
One or two redundant extender units, type ADSE, extending the IQ-bus.
In each subordinate subrack, the ADSE unit(s) replace(s) the NT unit(s) of the first
subrack. They are inserted in the NT/EXT slots (numbers 30 and 31).

ACU Unit
One ACU unit providing alarm control functions, a LAN and a Serial Interface for local
management.
This unit is equipped in the first subrack of each rack and in each subrack that houses
additional NT unit(s), e.g. when different network elements are located in the same rack.
The ACU board is inserted in the ACU slot (number 29).

Line Interface Modules

The XD splitterless subrack accommodates different types of LIM:
• Up to sixteen DSL-LIMs supporting a number of DSL subscriber lines to CPE.
• 48-line DSL-type LIMs (ADLT).
A subrack fully equipped with only 48-line DSL-LIMs supports 768 DSL lines
(16 x 48 lines).
• 24-line DSL-type LIMs (ADLT, SHLT, ...).
A subrack fully equipped with only 24-line DSL-LIMs supports 384 DSL lines
(16 x 24 lines).
• A number of LIMs supporting optical links to subtending network (NE).
• Up to three SALT units.
Each unit supports one STM-1/OC-3c link to a subtending network.

LIMs can be inserted in any of the 16 LT slots. The accompanying splitter or applique,
if any, is installed in XD splitter subrack or external device.

Splitters, LIM Appliques

Splitters and/or appliques, if required for equipped LIMs, cannot be installed in the XD
splitterless subrack.
Splitters and/or appliques can be optional (not required on full digital loop). When
present, they are installed in XD splitter subrack (see “Extreme Density Splitter
Subrack”) or in separate external devices under control of incumbent LEC (Local
Exchange Carrier). ADSL connections are provided via CHAMP connectors in the
connector area.

RU Extension Modules
A number of RUEM, each connecting to a RU.
Each RUEM LIM drives one optical link to a RU. In this RU up to 12, 24, 36 or 48
physical VDSL ports can be planned to support remote subscribers. A RUEM with
subtending RU can be considered as a VDSL-type LIM with the planned number of
VDSL ports.
Each RUEM LIM is assigned a physical and a logical mnemonic:
• The physical mnemonic identifies the physical RUEM board (HW level).
• The logical mnemonic identifies a specific functionality of the RUEM board. This
functionality depends on the kind of DSL modules (ADSL, VDSL, ...) installed in the
RU. The logical mnemonic is required to allow planning the RUEM LIM and
managing the SW loading of the RUEM/RU.

Different logical mnemonics can be linked to the same physical mnemonic.

A RUEM board can be inserted in any of the 16 LT slots. It requires no applique.

• Up to three GELT units (GE-LSMs) providing access to an EMAN through a GE link.
An optional IPGS applique provides outband management of the GELT unit via
10BASE-T interface.
The GELT unit must be installed in the main subrack of the ASAM, as there are no
HCL extenders available. The GELT board can be inserted in any of the 16 LT slots.
The IPGS applique, if any, is mounted at the rear of the GELT unit.
• Up to two IPGW units.
Each Gateway contains an IPGW unit supporting four Ethernet links to/from the IP
network and an IPGS applique providing connection. A subrack equipped with two
IP Gateways (the maximum number possible in an ASAM) supports eight Ethernet
links (2 x 4 links).
The double-board IPGW can be inserted in any of the eight LT slot pairs P1 to P8 (see
Figure 2-18). The accompanying IPGS applique is mounted on the corresponding
CHAMP connector in the connector area (see “Server Appliques”).

Gateways and server modules can only be equipped in a hub-ASAM. It is recommended

to install them in the first subrack, which contains the NT unit.

Combining Different LSMs in XD Splitterless Subrack

The XD splitterless subrack can simultaneously house different LSM type units:
• LIMs supporting DSL subscriber lines (ADLT, ABLT, SMLT, SHLT, ...)
• LIMs driving optical links to subtending network (SALT)
• LIMs driving links to Remote Unit (RUEM)
• Servers supporting links to network (VoDSL, IPGW).

However, certain types cannot be combined with any other LSM type in the same LT slot
pair:
• The IPGW, because this double-board unit occupies both two slots of the LT slot pair.

Redundancy in XD Splitterless Subrack

Redundancy is optionally applied. Like in the HD and the UD Combo subracks, software
supports it for certain units and there are hardware provisions to provide more in the
future. Table 2-17 gives an overview per release.

1+1 NT Redundancy
The 1+1 NT redundancy is optionally applied.
• SW supports 1+1 EPS for all NT units (except for FENT) by using a second NT unit
as a standby.
• SW supports 1+1 APS only for SANT units as the optical link is also duplicated.
There is one link for the active and one for the standby SANT unit (optical cables are
directly connected to redundant units, no applique is used).

1+1 LSM
This redundancy is not supported by SW, but there are HW provisions for future
application.
The XD-Splitterless backplane provides tracks at the LT slots for EPS and APS for LSM.

1:N LSM
This redundancy is not supported. Spare LIMs and associated splitters/appliques are not
supported.

3 — HD and UD Rack Configurations

3.1 Introduction

This chapter describes the ETSI rack configurations supported in this release with HD
and UD subracks.

3.2 Rack Densities

Depending on the densities of the subracks installed, there are three possible rack
configurations:
• A High Density (HD) rack contains only HD subracks.
The rules of a pure HD configuration apply.
• An Ultra Density (UD) rack contains only UD subracks, UD-Combo and/or UD-LT
(splitterless).
The rules of a pure UD configuration apply.
• A Mixed Density HD&UD rack contains one HD subrack followed by one UD
subrack.
• A rack with UD Mini-RAM contains only UD Mini-RAMs.

3.3 Physical Rack Types

Two physical rack types are supported in Central Office (CO) -ASAM and Controlled
Environment Vault (CEV).
Table 3-1 gives an overview.

3 — HD and UD Rack Configurations

3.4 Rack Configurations

This section describes the possible HD and UD rack configurations in general as well as
specific for HD and UD.

General Rack Configuration

An HD or UD rack contains:
• A rack cabinet: high 1800 mm or 2200 mm (see Table 3-1)
• A door opening/ closing at left or right side with handle or lock
• A Top Rack Unit (TRU) (on top in the rack) with:
• Power input block for connection of CO supply cables and distribution to one,
two or three subracks and accompanying fan units
• Depending on the type of powering, Circuit Breakers (CB) for rack or subrack
powering, switches for subrack powering or no protection devices for fixed
subrack powering.
• Interface to CO/CEV alarm system
• Alarm interface to equipment inside the rack
• LED display indicating rack alarm conditions.
• One, two or three subrack(s) depending on rack height and subrack types installed.
• One Alarm Control Unit (ACU) , located in the upper subrack and performing rack
alarm and control functions. When this subrack is the first of the ASAM, the ACU
also provides local Craft Interface.
Note: a rack with more than one Network Element (NE) has more than one ACU, the
first subrack of each NE has its own ACU.
• One Fan unit per equipped subrack, for equipment cooling.
The fan unit is a separate unit inserted in the subrack.
The NT unit in the main subrack of the ASAM can require a more powerful fan unit.
For example, the main subrack of an ASAM R5.x system must be equipped with an
AFAN-H unit, it contains eight fans providing sufficient air cooling. If not,
overheating NT units could cause fan failure and system breakdown.
Other subracks in the ASAM can optionally be equipped with AFAN-G or AFAN-H
units (when considering migration from R4.x systems).
The fan unit in the lowest subrack has to be equipped with a dust filter.

Space Improvement for UD Cabling

When applying raised floor cabling for UD equipment, UT9 cabinets provide no space
enough for routing all the MDF cables. Extensions have to be mounted to extend the
cabling area at the left and right side of the rack (see "Side Plates and Extensions for UT9

There is no problem for SI cabinets, because they provide the space required for all UD
cabling. Moreover, its bottomplate can be removed to allow routing via holes at the
bottom.

8 — ASAM System Configurations

8.1 Introduction

This section describes the 7301 ASAM configurations supported in this release with HD,
UD and XD subracks.

8.2 Parameters

In CO or remote-site ASAM, different physical layouts, "concentration" ratios and line

counts are possible.
The ASAM configurations are defined by following parameters:
• Subrack types used (see “Subracks”):
• High Density (Combo) = HD-Combo
• Ultra Density Combo = UD-Combo
• Ultra Density splitterless (only Line Termination) = UD-LT
• Ultra Density Mini-RAM = UMRAM-A
• Standard eXtreme Density Combo = XD-Combo
• Space Improved eXtreme Density Combo = SI XD-Combo
• eXtreme Density splitterless (only Line Termination) = XD-LT
• eXtreme Density Splitter = XD-SP
• Rack cabinets used (see “Rack Equipment”):
• Rack with 1800 x 600 x 300 mm cabinet for HD and UD
• Rack with 2200 x 600 x 300 mm cabinet for HD, UD and XD-splitter(less)
• Rack with 2200 x 600 x 600 mm cabinet for Standard XD-Combo;
• Rack with 2200 x 600 x 600 mm cabinet for Space Improved XD-Combo;
• Equipment practice followed: LArge EUropean (LAEU)
• NT type used: GANT-C based (SANT-G, SBNT-A) and, from R5.1.10 on, GANT-D
based (SANT-H, SBNT-B)

8.3 Common Items (Rules and Restrictions)

The following common items apply.

ASAM Location
The ASAM configurations described can be installed in various locations: conventional
Central Office (CO) , Controlled Environment Vault (CEV) or remote cabinets.

Environmental and EMC Requirements

The ASAM for indoor use (CO, CEV) complies with
• the environmental requirements specified by ETS 300 019-1-3/Class 3.1 (3.1E)

8 — ASAM System Configurations

Subrack Type
The subrack type is defined by four bits identifying the BackPlane TYPe (BP-TYP).
This Physical Location IDentification (PLID) is hardcoded on the backplane, Table 8-1
gives an overview.

Table 8-1 Subrack Identification or BackPlane TYPe (BP-TYP) Setting

Equipment Practice
The equipment practice applied is defined by Rack TYPe (R-TYP) identification bits.
This Physical Location IDentification (PLID) is set with jumpers on the backplane and
checked by software. Table 8-2 gives an overview.

Cabinet Types
HD and UD racks can have an UT9 type cabinet of 1800 or 2200 mm. However, Space
Improved (SI) cabinet of 2200 mm is preferred for UD rack because it provides space
required for ultra density MDF cable routing.
XD Modular racks with XD splitterless and XD splitter subrack have a Space Improved
(SI-) based cabinet of 2200 mm, but side holes are adapted for splitterless cable routing.
Standard XD-Combo racks with standard XD-Combo subracks have 2200 mm cabinets
with footprint 600 x 600 mm (doors and sideplates not included).
Space Improved XD-Combo racks with SI XD-Combo subracks have SI-based 2200 mm
cabinets with footprint 600 x 600 mm (sideplates not included).
It is not allowed to mix 1800 and 2200 mm racks inside the same ASAM, the installer
has to make sure this requirement is met.

8 — ASAM System Configurations

Number of Subracks
The maximum number of subracks in one ASAM is 12. In practice however, the number
of subracks is limited by the NT type used (see “ASAM Configurations”).

Number of Racks
The maximum number of racks in one ASAM is six.

Mixed ASAM
Different subrack types can be mixed inside the ASAM. Following rules/restrictions
apply:
• UD Mini-RAM can not be mixed in the same ASAM with other subrack types.
• In a chain of subracks:
• UD always follows HD
• XD always follows UD.
• XD-splitter and splitterless always follow XD-Combo.
The installer has to apply the right subrack order (SW doesn’t check it).
• All subracks are running the same software release.
• Racks can be equipped in different ways:
• HD racks contain only HD subracks, hardware rules of HD configuration apply.
• UD racks contain UD-Combo and/or UD-LT subracks, hardware rules of UD
configuration apply. Table 8-3 gives the maximum configurations possible.
• XD-Combo racks contain only Standard or only Space Improved XD-Combo
subracks. Standard and SI can not be mixed in the same rack, but the same
hardware rules of XD-Combo configuration apply.
• XD Modular racks contain XD-LT and/or XD-SP subracks, hardware rules of
XD Modular configuration apply. Table 8-4 gives the configurations possible.
• Mixed HD&UD racks contain HD-Combo followed by UD-Combo subrack.
The installer has to apply the right rack configuration (SW doesn’t check it).

Restrictions Optical Units and Fibers

In theory, the number of NT and LT slots define the maximum number of optical units
and fibers possible. In practice, however, requirements for EMC, fiber handling and
routing limit the maximum number of optical units that can be installed. Table 8-9 gives
an overview of fiber location in each type of subrack.
The maximum number of optical units and fibers supported in a subrack is defined by
following items:
• Fiber types applied for supported optical units (Table 8-7)
• EMC restrictions in the subrack per type of NT or LT board used (Table 8-8)
• Restrictions for handling and routing fibers in subracks (Table 8-9).
Also refer to Hardware Installation Manuals.

Notes:
• (1) Any arbitrarily mix of UD-Combo and UD-LT subracks is allowed (refer to
Table 8-3 for UD rack layouts). All UD subracks are assumed to be equipped with
24-line LT units.
• (2) The 1800 mm rack type can contain one or two UD subracks (see table 8-3)
(3)
• The 2200 mm rack type can contain two or three UD subracks (see table 8-3)
• (4) Mixed HD&UD rack. In case the upgrade includes replacing the HD with an UD
top rack unit, the maximum current to the UD subrack is 20 A. In case the upgraded
rack uses the original HD top rack unit, the current to the UD subrack has to be limited
to 16 A.
(5)
• Applicable for Standard as well as Space Improved XD-Combo, but both subrack
variants can not be mixed in the same rack.
(5.0.20/50)
• Support from R5.0.20/50 on.
(5.1)
• Support from R5.1 on.
