ASAM System
Figure 2-1 shows how the ASAM system is build up with subracks.
Figure 2-1 7301 ASAM System Buildup with Subracks (first two Subracks shown)
Notes:
• (1) NT applique, optionally used to provide BITS/LAN interface for optical link.
• (2) TSAP, optional test applique for metallic line testing.
• (3) ACU unit, only in subrack with NT unit(s) or in each subrack that is first in rack.
The HD Combo subrack is supported from R5.0. It accommodates HD units. The high
density backplane allows support of Line Interface Modules (LIMs) and associated
appliques serving up to 12 xDSL lines.
Dimensions
The HD subrack (ALTS-F) is 950 mm high. Refer to Table 2-1 for the overall
dimensions.
NT Appliques
Optionally, one NT applique providing BITS/LAN interface:
• SANC applique for SANT/SBNT unit(s).
This board is inserted in the NTI/O slot above the NT units.
Extender Units
One or two extender units, type ADSE, extending the ASAM configuration over several
subracks
In each subordinate subrack, the ADSE unit(s) replace(s) the NT unit(s) of the first
subrack.
ADSE units are inserted in the NT/EXT slots (slot numbers 30, 31).
ACU Unit
One ACU unit providing alarm control functions, a LAN and a Serial Interface for local
management.
This unit is equipped in the first subrack of each rack and in each subrack that houses (an)
additional NT unit(s), e.g. when different network elements are located in the same rack.
The ACU board is inserted in the ACU slot (slot number 29).
The splitter or applique is inserted in the AP slot above the LIM served.
RU Extension Modules
A number of Remote Unit Extension Module (RUEM) , each connecting to a Remote Unit
(RU).
Each RUEM LIM drives one optical link to a Remote Unit (RU) . On this RU up to 12,
24, 36 or 48 physical VDSL ports can be planned to support remote subscribers. A
RUEM with subtending RU can be considered as a VDSL-type LIM with the planned
number of VDSL ports.
Each RUEM LIM is assigned a physical and a logical mnemonic:
• The physical mnemonic (RUEM-A) identifies the physical RUEM board (HW level).
• The logical mnemonic (RUEM-A) identifies a specific functionality of the RUEM
board. This functionality depends on the kind of xDSL modules (ADSL, VDSL, ...)
installed in the RU. The logical mnemonic is required to allow planning the RUEM
LIM and managing the SW loading of the RUEM/RU.
LSM Appliques
A number of IPGS-C appliques (IPGW appliques):
• Up to two for IP Gateway, one per equipped IPGW unit.
As shown in Figure 2-3, the IPGS board (single board) is inserted in the left slot of
the AP slot pair above the IPGW unit (double-board).
• Up to three optional appliques for GE server, one per equipped GELT unit.
The IPGS board, if any, is inserted in the AP slot above the GELT unit.
Test Applique
Optionally, one TeSt APplique, type TSAP.
One unit is equipped per subrack to perform metallic line testing.
It is inserted in the TST I/O slot.
Spare Applique
Optionally, up to eight SPare APpliques, type SPAP.
When 1:N LSM redundancy is applied, up to eight DSL-LIMs (ADLT, SHLT, SMLT)
can serve as a spare. There is one spare applique (SPAP) per spare LIM, it is inserted in
the AP slot above the spare LIM.
The 1:N redundancy procedures are not supported in the current release, but the
associated appliques remain supported by SW to avoid any migration issues.
PWRIO Unit
One PWRI/O unit.
This unit is always present at delivery, it is installed in the PWR I/O slot at subrack
assembly.
Fan Unit
One FAN unit.
Each subrack has to be equipped with a FAN unit, which is installed in the fan area. The
fan unit in the lowest subrack has to be equipped with a dustfilter (see "Rack
Configuration").
The main subrack of an ASAM system must be equipped with an AFAN-H unit, this unit
contains eight fans providing sufficient air cooling for the NT units present. If not,
overheating NT units could cause fan failure and system breakdown.
Other subracks in the ASAM can be equipped with AFAN-G or AFAN-H units (when
considering migration from R4.x systems).

1+1 NT Redundancy
The 1+1 NT redundancy is optionally applied by using a second NT unit as a standby in
slot position 31.
In case of a SDH NT board (SANT-G/H, SBNT-A/B), following 1+1 NT/EXT chain
redundancy configurations are supported from R5.1.10 onwards
• 1+1 NT/EXT chain redundancy: Equipment Protection Switching (EPS) only
configuration:
The system will only switch-over the extension chain without having the network link
protection coupled to it (=APS or the so called facility protection switchover not
supported). In this case, only one optical link will be directly connected to one of the
pair NT boards.
• 1+1 NT/EXT chain redundancy: EPS/Automatic Protection Switching (APS) coupled
configuration:
The system will switch-over the extension and the network link in a coupled way,
meaning that an extender chain switch-over implies a link switch-over and vice-versa.
In this configuration, the optical link is also duplicated (the optical link is directly
connected to the NT board, one optical link to each NT).
Optionally, a pair of redundant NT boards supports EPS and APS.
Miscellaneous
The backplane provides a distributive bus that can be used for broadcast application (e.g.
video distribution).
The UD-Combo subrack is supported from R5.0. It accommodates UD units and most of
the HD units that fit the HD subrack. The UD backplane doubles the line capacity
supported by the HD subrack. The UD-Combo supports LIMs serving up to 24 DSL
lines.
Dimensions
The UD-Combo subrack (ALTS-M) has the same dimensions as the HD subrack
(950 mm high and fits the same cabinet (600 mm x 300 mm)). Refer to Table 2-1 for
overall dimensions.
The UD-Combo subrack has the same layout as the HD subrack (see Figure 2-12), with
the same areas:
• The Line Termination area is 450 mm high and houses 420 mm x 220 mm plug-in
units.
• The Splitter (Applique) area is 330 mm high and houses 300 mm x 220 mm plug-in
units.

Dimensions
The type of XD-Combo subrack applied is ALTS-R, ADSL Line Termination Shelf
(ALTS) version R. Figure 2-9 gives a front and rear view (fan unit and front cover are
included).
As shown in Figure 2-10, the XD-Combo subrack is twice as deep as the HD and UD
subracks and it has an XD-Combo MidPlane (MP) which allows installing units at the
front as well as at the rear side of the subrack. This concept facilitates inserting and
accessing units and provides more space for extreme density cabling (e.g. MDF cabling).
Table 2-11 gives the overall dimensions of the subrack and Figure 2-10 gives dimensions
of areas inside.
The XD-Combo subrack is 695 mm high and fits a transmission rack of 2200 mm. An
XD-Combo rack (including XD-Combo subracks and covers) occupies a floorspace of
600 mm x 600 mm.
Figure 2-11 gives an inside view of LT and Applique area. Figure 2-12 gives the different
slot positions.
In consequence of midplane routing, the order of AP slot positions is opposite to the order
of LT slot positions. For the same reason, the NT I/O appliques are at the right side (at
the rear of NT units).

Miscellaneous
The XD-Combo midplane provides a distributive bus that can be used for broadcast
application (e.g. video distribution).
The SI XD-Combo subrack is the space improved version of the standard XD-Combo.
The SI XD-Combo subrack has the features of the standard XD-Combo, except that it
provides SI items:
• Provisions made for simplified cable supports to tie wrap MDF cables (CI)
• Reduced depth to foresee rack doors within 600 mm.
Dimensions
Figure 2-14 gives front and rear view of the SI XD-Combo subrack (fan unit and front
cover are included).
As the space improved subrack is less deep (576.5 instead of 591 mm), it provides more
space for cable routing. As a consequence, the SI XD-Combo rack including covers fits
within a floorspace of 600 mm x 600 mm, which complies with ETSI 300 119-2
requirements.
Table 2-14 gives overall dimensions.
Redundancy
Refer to the standard XD-Combo, redundancy support is identical.
Dimensions
The mnemonic applied is ALTS-T, ADSL Line Termination Shelf (ALTS) version T.
Figure 2-15 gives a front view (fan unit and front cover are not included).

Each RUEM LIM drives one optical link to a RU. In this RU up to 12, 24, 36 or 48
physical VDSL ports can be planned to support remote subscribers. A RUEM with
subtending RU can be considered as a VDSL-type LIM with the planned number of
VDSL ports.
Each RUEM LIM is assigned a physical and a logical mnemonic:
• The physical mnemonic identifies the physical RUEM board (HW level).
• The logical mnemonic identifies a specific functionality of the RUEM board. This
functionality depends on the kind of DSL modules (ADSL, VDSL, ...) installed in the
RU. The logical mnemonic is required to allow planning the RUEM LIM and
managing the SW loading of the RUEM/RU.
Server Appliques
A number IPGS-G appliques:
• Up to three for Gigabit Ethernet, one per equipped GELT unit, if any.
The IPGS applique is installed in the connector area. This unit is plugged, as shown

8.1 Introduction
This section describes the 7301 ASAM configurations supported in this release with HD,
UD and XD subracks.
8.2 Parameters
ASAM Location
The ASAM configurations described can be installed in various locations: conventional
Central Office (CO) , Controlled Environment Vault (CEV) or remote cabinets.
Subrack Type
The subrack type is defined by four bits identifying the BackPlane TYPe (BP-TYP).
This Physical Location IDentification (PLID) is hardcoded on the backplane, Table 8-1
gives an overview.
HD-Combo ETSI 0 1 1 0
UD-Combo ETSI 1 0 1 0
UD-LT ETSI 1 0 1 1
UD-Mini-RAM ETSI 1 1 0 0
XD-Combo ETSI 1 1 1 0
XD-LT ETSI 1 0 0 1
XD-SP ETSI 1 1 1 1
Equipment Practice
The equipment practice applied is defined by Rack TYPe (R-TYP) identification bits.
This Physical Location IDentification (PLID) is set with jumpers on the backplane and
checked by software. Table 8-2 gives an overview.
Table 8-2 ETSI Equipment Practice or Rack TYPe (R-TYP) Setting on Backplane
Cabinet Types
HD and UD racks can have an UT9 type cabinet of 1800 or 2200 mm. However, Space
Improved (SI) cabinet of 2200 mm is preferred for UD rack because it provides space
required for ultra density MDF cable routing.
XD Modular racks with XD splitterless and XD splitter subrack have a Space Improved
(SI-) based cabinet of 2200 mm, but side holes are adapted for splitterless cable routing.
Standard XD-Combo racks with standard XD-Combo subracks have 2200 mm cabinets
with footprint 600 x 600 mm (doors and sideplates not included).
Space Improved XD-Combo racks with SI XD-Combo subracks have SI-based 2200 mm
cabinets with footprint 600 x 600 mm (sideplates not included).
It is not allowed to mix 1800 and 2200 mm racks inside the same ASAM, the installer
has to make sure this requirement is met.
Number of Subracks
The maximum number of subracks in one ASAM is 12. In practice however, the number
of subracks is limited by the NT type used (see “ASAM Configurations”).
Number of Racks
The maximum number of racks in one ASAM is six.
Mixed ASAM
Different subrack types can be mixed inside the ASAM. Following rules/restrictions
apply:
• UD Mini-RAM can not be mixed in the same ASAM with other subrack types.
• In a chain of subracks:
• UD always follows HD
• XD always follows UD.
• XD-splitter and splitterless always follow XD-Combo.
The installer has to apply the right subrack order (SW doesn’t check it).
• All subracks are running the same software release.
• Racks can be equipped in different ways:
• HD racks contain only HD subracks, hardware rules of HD configuration apply.
• UD racks contain UD-Combo and/or UD-LT subracks, hardware rules of UD
configuration apply. Table 8-3 gives the maximum configurations possible.
• XD-Combo racks contain only Standard or only Space Improved XD-Combo
subracks. Standard and SI can not be mixed in the same rack, but the same
hardware rules of XD-Combo configuration apply.
• XD Modular racks contain XD-LT and/or XD-SP subracks, hardware rules of
XD Modular configuration apply. Table 8-4 gives the configurations possible.
• Mixed HD&UD racks contain HD-Combo followed by UD-Combo subrack.
The installer has to apply the right rack configuration (SW doesn’t check it).
Subrack 3 UD-LT
Software Model
The real physical configuration is mapped on an internal SoftWare (SW) model, which
depends on the Equipment Practice Type and the NT type applied.
The numbers of racks and subracks are restricted by the selected SW model. Table 8-5
gives an overview.

GANT-C based configurations are supported from R5.0, GANT-D based configurations
from R5.1.10 on.
Software Restrictions
The following software restrictions apply:
• The 6 x 3 SW model is used, i.e., these configurations can have a maximum of six
racks, each with up to three subracks. (see Table 8-5).
• The maximum configuration supports 9216 xDSL lines (192 boards 48-line boards).
• The UD subracks can be equipped with 12-line as well as with 24-line LT units.
Configurations
Software supports following ASAM configurations (see Table 8-10).
• Pure HD ASAM:
High Density ASAM contains only HD subracks, Figure 8-1 shows maximum
configurations.
• Pure UD ASAM:
Ultra Density ASAM contains only UD subracks. UD-Combo and UD-LT subracks
can be mixed according to rack layouts of Table 8-3.
Figure 8-2 and Figure 8-3 show maximum UD configurations.
• Pure Standard XD-Combo ASAM:
This Extreme Density ASAM contains only standard XD-Combo subracks.
Figure 8-7 shows maximum XD-Combo configuration.
