Introduction To STS

This document provides an introduction to the STS (Science, Technology, and Society) course. It defines the key terms of science, technology, and society. Science is the process of observing and understanding our surroundings through questioning and finding answers. Technology applies what is learned through science. Society refers to groups of individuals and the influence between them. The spheres of science, technology, and society are interconnected - they impact and rely on each other. For example, without society there would be no need for science, and science and technology are essential for society to progress. The document includes activities that link human needs to the technologies developed to meet them and provides an example of the interrelatedness of the spheres through genetically modified organisms and the role

Analysis.
From the activity, are these three spheres connected to each other?
These spheres are inextricably linked. Without society, science would be
impossible to exist. Science, on the other hand, is essential to the success of
technology. Without science and technology, our society would never be able
to grow and progress.

Do they relate to each other in just one direction? Both directions?

No. They relate to each other in any possible given direction. As I have
spoken of, the three are interconnected. The one couldn't prevail without the
two, and vice versa.

Activity. Complete the table below. Identify 3 human needs and the technology made
to meet that need.

Assessement. Make your own example of the interrelatedness of the three spheres in
the figure below. Provide a clear explanation of your answer on the space provided.

The National

Modified Biosafety of the
Organisms Philippines.

Throughout time, the human population has exploded exponentially. Our food
security grows insecure as we progress and stabilize our economy. The demand for
food and raw materials skyrocketed, prompting us to sought other ways of sustainable
farming.

Since we already have the experience and advanced knowledge in genetic

engineering, we decide to try and tamper with natural processes. To harvest and
acquire a good volume of crops with excellent security, humans extend their reach
and modified plants to resist diseases and pests. Gladly, this endeavor succeeded,
and now GMOs are planted across the country.

Of course, this plan would never go unnoticed by critics. People raised various
concerns about consuming GMOs—as well as the potential harm of employing them
in natural ecosystems. That's why society, our government established NCBP or the
National Committee on Biosafety of the Philippines. To regulate and overlook all the
possible and existing advantages and disadvantages of using GMOs and genetic
engineering.
