Problem SET #1

Here are two 1-page synthesis papers on the topics: a. Mathematics organized patterns and regularities in the world. Mathematics plays a fundamental role in organizing and describing patterns found throughout nature. From the smallest microscopic structures to the vast expanses of the universe, mathematics provides a framework to understand the order and repetition inherent in our world. Fibonacci sequences, spirals, fractals and other mathematical patterns are abundantly evident when examining plants, shells, mountains, rivers, and more. The arrangement of leaves and seeds on plants, the spiraling patterns of hurricanes and pinecones, the fractal-like branching of trees and veins all demonstrate nature's reliance on mathematical order. PROBLEM

SET #1

NAME : Alliyah Ashanti Lopez

COURSE : BSBA BE 1-3

SUBJECT : Mathematics in the Modern World

DATE : September 15, 2021

I. Watch the video clip “Nature by Numbers” by Cristobal Villa at
https://vimeo.com/9953368. Write a reflection about the video. (5 pts.)

As I reflect about the video clip “Nature by Numbers” by Cristobal Villa, it made me
realized how big the world is and how perfectly our creator created it. As Cristobal Villa has a
set of animations illustrating various mathematical ideas, starting with a stunning animation of
the Fibonacci sequence and proceeding to the Golden Ratio, Angle Ratio, Delaunay
Triangulation, and Voronoi Tessellations. I realized that many objects in nature are made up of
forms and patterns. Although the terms seem to be scary as I watch the video clip, the truth is
that math is a very simple and easy subject to understand. "Nature by numbers" is a term used to
compute the natural world in ordinary language. We often pretend that we really do not calculate
what is going on around us, yet we do. The Fibonacci sequence as well as other mathematical
features saturate the natural world. Nature's numerical system is indeed the Fibonacci sequence,
they can be found in nature in a variety of forms, from plant leaf arrangement to flower floret
pattern, pinecone bracts, even pineapple scales. In addition, mathematics is really a universal
language since it can be found on various areas that may be seemingly different and irrelevant
from math at first, but if we will look deeper into it, we will see how math comes into play.

II. What new ideas did you learn in Mathematics? (5 pts.)

Basic mathematics, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, had been
taught to me since I was a child, but the nature of mathematics was a new knowledge for me this
time. Though I was familiar with some of the phrases used in the video, I was not so sure what
the meant. The golden ratio, for example, was discussed to me in the tenth or eleventh grade, but
we never really focused on it, so I don’t remember or understand much of it, especially when
they try to relate it to a person’s face. Now, I finally understand why is the human face was given
as an example: the golden ratio is a way to see if everything is in its proper place or if everything
is balanced and equal. I am thrilled to learn more in this subject.
III. Show your appreciation of the pages inspired on numbers, geometry and nature by
writing an essay to explain what have you learned from them:
a. Math Patterns in Nature. https://www.fi.edu/math-patterns-nature (5pts.)
b. The Mathematics of Nature’s Patterns.
https://curiodyssey.org/blog/mathematics-of-natures-patterns/ (5pts.)

Mathematics is a subject that deals with numbers, patterns, formulas, graphs and many
more. It requires critical thinking and many years of practice in order for you to master it. That is
why most of the people are not fond of it. However, everything around us can be associated with
math. Mathematics is in our Nature and we can never escape from it. It has wonderful concepts
that people need to see for them to love it.

The different math patterns were briefly described in the first article that I read, and it was
said that Nature loves to arrange itself in patterns. I learned that fractals are the first math pattern.
Fractals are pattern that involves repeating lines or shapes. We can also think of it as a never-
ending pattern. Branches of tress, snowflakes, and the veins in our bodies are examples. Second
math pattern is the spirals. It is a curved pattern that revolves around a central point, growing
closer or further away from it as it goes. The examples of it are pineapple, hurricane, and
pinecones. Voronoi is the last math pattern discussed in the article. It is a pattern where defined
space or shapes exist, and each space contains a seed point to which everything in the area is
closer to it. The skin of giraffe and the wing of a dragon fly are two examples of Voronoi.

Nature’s patterns were explored in the second article, and it was linked to mathematics.
Nature’s patterns are new to me because I’m only familiar with the concept of mathematics
having pattern, thus I wasn’t expecting to read an article about Nature having patterns. Fibonacci
is the most frequent math topic that everyone may find because it is commonly seen in our
surrounding, such as in flowers and plants. When we say Fibonacci, we’re talking about adding
the first two numbers and each number corresponds to the sum of the previous two terms.
Nature’s patterns include honeycombs, cannon balls, and bees, as well as foam, cracks, and
waves.
Mathematics is everywhere we go and we cannot escape from it. We must understand that
discovering and learning new things is part of our nature in order to have power, because
knowledge is power. We need knowledge to share it with others, as well as to understand why
such things exist and how they might benefit us. While some aspects of nature may be
unappealing to our eyes, others are undeniably beautiful. It may be a difficult subject, but after
we have mastered it, we can clearly understand that mathematics is all around us.

IV. Research on some applications of Mathematics that has not been covered on our
lecture. Provide your resource and elaborate how is Mathematics is applied for the
idea or problem. (10pts.)

Some people may be confused as to why they should study mathematics when their
dream job is not related to mathematics. They must be thinking “how can I apply algebra in my
job? how will it help me?” but little did we know, mathematics is an essential part of our lives.
We just don’t realize it but it’s all around us, and it’s everywhere. In our daily lives, we use basic
math. So, here are some true applications of mathematics.

To begin with Construction Purposes, math is the foundation of any building project.
Many computations, budget planning, target setting, cost analysis, and so on are all based on
arithmetic. These are the applications of mathematics in terms of construction purposes, such as
preparing budgets, taking measurements, estimating the cost and profit, arithmetic calculations,
geometry, calculus and statistics and trigonometry. I sought the help of a family member who
works in construction to serve as my evidence, and he highlighted the importance of math in
getting the job done. The following one is the Cooking and Baking. The math is also performed
in our kitchen. A set of steps are followed while cooking or baking something, instructing us on
how much of the quantity to use for cooking, the proportion of different ingredients to use,
cooking methods, cookware to use, and so on. These are based on various of mathematical ideas.
Allowing guests into the kitchen as you prepare and cook is a fun way to learn math and basic
cooking techniques. I sought assistance from my mother, who is skilled in the kitchen. However,
in terms of cooking and baking, these are the applications of mathematics, such as mathematical
algorithms, mathematical operations, ratios, and proportions, to get the task done properly.

Finally, I can say that Mathematics is a universal language that is used in practically
every aspect of life. Basic mathematical notions are always obeyed.
V. Prepare a one page SYNTHESIS PAPER for each:
