This module is created for the learners of region 10 learners.
With the Department of Education uprising to engage learners with the
new norms.
Matter has two properties – physical and chemical. Both of these properties have effects on
matter. However, this lesson will focus on one chemical property of matter.
The presence or absence of oxygen has various effects on matter. Among these
common ones that you readily see are combustion and rusting.
In this module you are expected to achieve the following objectives:
• Discuss the effects of presence or absence of oxygen in a material
• Identify the changes in matter in the presence or absence of oxygen.
• List the effects of presence and absence of oxygen.
• Define combustion and rusting.
• Awareness of what oxygen can do.
Lesson Investigate changes that happen
in materials under the following
1 conditions:
a. presence or lack of oxygen
A. Directions: Draw a line in order to connect the pictures in column A into their
corresponding names in column B.
Column A Column B
1.
O new nail
O lighted candle
2. O burning wood
O rusting scissor
3. O eggplant
4.
5.
1
B. Directions: Write P for presence of oxygen and A for absence of oxygen of the
following materials.
C. Directions: Write True if the underlined word is correct and False if it is wrong. Write
the correct answer on the space provided before the number.
______1. There are three important things needed for combustion to occur.
______2. The presence or absence of oxygen has various effects on matter these are the
combustion and flammability.
______3. Rusting is caused by the reaction of iron with oxygen present in the air.
______4. The amount of combustion formed in an iron depends on the moisture and
humidity of the surrounding.
______5. When an apple is cut, the fleshy part of the fruit changes color into yellow.
______6. Carbon dioxide is a part of the air that surrounds us.
______7. Iron when combined with oxygen form rust.
______8. Oxygen can cause changes on different materials.
______9. Lighted candle shows the absence of oxygen.
______10. New chains show the presence of oxygen.
Directions: Put a check (/) on the picture for useful materials and X for harmful
materials.
2
Matter undergoes changes. This can either be physical or chemical change.
Physical changes happen when material change its size, shape, or form. When the
composition of the material is altered, chemical change occurs. The formation of a
new product, formation of gas, release or absorption of heat and formation or
precipitate are some evidences of chemical change. With these changes, it can help
us to manage and minimize waste.
3
Oxygen is a part of the air that surrounds us. It has effects on different materials.
Some fruits like apple, turnips, mango, etc. and some root crops like sweet potato
eggplant, etc. have enzymes which when combined with oxygen gives it brown
color, a sign of food spoilage.
The combination of materials with oxygen is called Oxidation.
This example given undergo the process of chemical change.
Combustion refers to the process where substance burns in the presence of
oxygen.
The three things needed for combustion are oxygen, fuel, and heat.
If one of these three is not present, then combustion will not occur
Iron when combined with oxygen form rust.
iron with oxygen present in the air.
Directions: Identify each picture inside the box. Encircle the materials which shows
the presence of oxygen and box the materials which shows absence of
oxygen.
4
Directions: Match the words in Column A with its meaning in Column B. Write the letter on
the blank.
A B.
____1. Combustion a. reaction of iron with oxygen present in air
_____2. Oxidation b. result of oxygen reacting with the enzymes found in
the food
____ 3. Rusting c. process of burning a material with the aid of oxygen
____ 4. Food Spoilage d. part of the air that surrounds us
____ 5. Oxygen e. combination of a substance with oxygen
5
Activity 4: Fill in the blanks
Directions: Supply the correct word to complete each sentence.
Directions: Choose the correct word from the box to complete the paragraph.
Presence spoilage
oxygen Oxidation
enzymes Absence
________ is a part of the air that has effects on different materials. Some fruits have
_____________which when combined with oxygen gives it a brown color, a sign of food
__________. The combination of materials with oxygen is called _________. Combustion
refers to the process where substance burns in the________ of oxygen.
Directions: Give at least 3 examples of materials which show the presence of oxygen and 3
for Absence of oxygen.
Presence of oxygen Absence of oxygen
1. __________________ 1. _______________
2. __________________ 2. _______________
3. __________________ 3. ______________
Directions: Classify the following materials whether it shows presence of oxygen and
absence of oxygen.
