CHERNOBYL DISASTER

One of the worst nuclear disasters in history.

100 times more radioactivity than Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
WHERE IS ?
• It is situated in Northern Ukraine
10 miles away from Belarus.
• 80 miles North of Kiev.
Located 1 miles north of the city of Chernobyl.
Basically the plant consists of 4 reactors.
Type:Reaktor Bolshoy Moshehnosty Kipyashiy
(RMBK) means 'reactor of high power channel'.
The reactor is cooled by water and moderated
by graphite in this way electricity is produced.
Produced 10% of Ukraine's electricity.
• On Saturday,April 26,1986.
• The Chernobyl accident was the
result of a flawed reactor design
that was operated with
inadequate trained personnel.
• The resulting steam explosion
and fires released atleast 5% of
the radioactive substances into
the atmosphere in the form of a
white powdered cloud.
• 43 people died as direct result of the accident.
• 39 firemen died as a result of acute radiation exposure in the days which
followed.
• The international experts have estimated that the radiation could cause
upto about 4000 eventual deaths among the higher-exposed Chernobyl
populations.
• Still today there are reports of anomalies in plants and animals bothin
exclusion zone and beyond areas of Chernobyl.
• In the area surrounding the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, human
habitation will not be safe again for approx. 20,000 years at minimum.
• The accident has shown the
importance of strict compliance
wuth the basic and technical
safety principles for nuclear
power plants.
• The accident has demonstrated
the need to establish and
support a high-level national
emergency response system
incase of man-made acciednts.
