Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Dear facilitator(s), this module is made for our Grade 8 students. Here,
they will learn the conventions in citing different sources. It covers two of the
common documentation styles that will help them in their studies especially
doing their research. They will learn these through patterns and examples.

Instruct them to write their answers legibly for easy checking and
follow the given deadline of submission.

Please don’t forget to remind your learners to use separate sheets in

answering the pre-test, self-check exercises, and post-test. Most importantly,
tell your students that if they have questions at any time, they should not
hesitate to contact you.

For the learner:

Welcome our dear learner(s). How was your week? Did you finish your
previous module? Congratulations for your hard work and determination to
learn. Keep going!
Have you ever heard from your older siblings and friends about their
hard time in doing their research stuff? Writing a good research paper is, in
and of itself, a major intellectual challenge. This module will help you lessen
the coming problem understand the importance of acknowledging others
effort.
Your new lesson will be about citation style. It needs accurate and
specific information necessary for documentation. You will learn how to
pattern the information in two ways of convention. Commonly, citation can
include the author's name, date, location of the publishing company, journal
title, DOI (Digital Object Identifier) or URL (Uniform Resource Locator)
colloquially termed a web address but slightly changes depending on the kind
of text or source you are citing. So please be cautious with small details in
completing the activities.

sources. You will learn the important points in unique formatting
guidelines for citing sources. Your learnings will be useful in your future
research works in referencing sources.

A. To observe ethics. It is not fair to use or copy someone else’s
words and/ or ideas as if they were your own

and that you are reliable as a writer

2. When should I cite the material?

A. There’s no need to document items that are common
knowledge. If you are unsure if something is common
knowledge, support the material with a source.
B. Document or support any material that indicate an opinion,
an interpretation, or anything questionable.

3. Which source should I use?

Use sources by trustworthy and recognized authors, experts in
the field, and eyewitnesses.
A. Articles without authors can be reliable sources if there is a
clearly a legitimate group taking responsibility for the
material (such as medical board).
B. Use books if they are properly documented throughout.
C. Use journals and other periodicals that are peer- reviewed or
approved by experts other than the author before they are
printed.
D. Use materials from the internet but be more careful when
using this kind of source than when using others.

pages, you will learn how to write these informations properly based on
our lesson. At the end of the lesson, we are going to use the data that

 Let Us Study
There are many different ways of citing resources. Check out
these two known styles.

Acknowledging the work of others involves citing the sources that you
used and formatting this information in a particular documentation style. A
documentation style is a standard approach to the citation of sources that
you have consulted, quoted or referenced in some way.

 APA (American Psychological Association)- It is the style

used by teachers in business and the social sciences. Endnotes are
used in this format.
 MLA (Modern Language Association)- It is the standard
format for papers, articles, and books in the arts and humanities.
Footnotes and endnotes for additional information are used in this
format.

This time, you will be guided with the following conventions in giving
credit to the source. The components of each style may change
depending on the format of the work you are citing. You will be guided
with patterns and examples as shown in the tables.

Core Components of an MLA Reference:

The two citation style above show the information necessary for
referencing and how the data are ordered. The illustrations show the
elements and its rules that are very useful in clarifying certain contents.
Refer to these core components if you have some clarifications, according to
the pattern and examples as shown in the table below. The pattern will be
formatted differently but contains the most basic components.

and MLA for more clarifications. For our practice, you will be
using the same information.
