1. INTRODUCTION

1981- Maruti Udyog LTD. Was incorporated on under the INDIA COMPANIES ACT, 1956.
1982- License and joint venture agreement signed between Maruti Udyog LTD. And Suzuki
Motor Corporation Japan .
1987- First lot of 500 cars exported to Hungary .
1992- Suzuki Motor Corporation increase its Stake in Maruti to 50 percent.
2002- Maruti finance in Mumbai with 10 Finance Companies is children’s park inaugurated in
Delhi. SMC acquire major stake in Maruti (54.2%).
2003- IPO (June – Issued oversubscribed 11.2)
Maruti gets listed on BSE and NSE – July .
2006- New car plant and the diesel engine facility commences operation during 2006-07 at
Manesar , Haryana .
In November, Maruti inaugurated a new institute of Driving Training and Research set up as a
collaborative project with Delhi Government at Sarai Kale Khan in South Delhi.
2007- Board of director gave approval to new name MUL to become Maruti Suzuki India
Limited .
Corporate social Responsibility adopts three villages in Manesar .
2008- M-800 crosses 25 lakh marks .
MSIL celebrate its Silver Jubilee.
MSIL launches National Road Safety program.
2009- A- Star Suzuki Alto debuts at Geneva Motor show sales begin.
Capacity to manufacture expanded from 800,000 to million units ( Gurgaon plus Manesar
plants ) annually.
2010- Launched Alto k10

2012 – Maruti Ertiga seven seater MPV R3 designed and developed in India, will compete
with Toyota Innova , Mahindra Xylo, and Tata Sumo Grande . In early 2012 , Suzuki Ertiga will
be exported first to Indonesia in completely knock down car .
2014 – Maruti XA alpha will be launched.
2015- 2400 cc kizashi , 6500 cc bandit bike launched.

2. COMPANY PROFILE
2.1 Company At a Glance

MARUTI SUZUKI LTD. Is the first automobile company in the world to be honored with
an ISO 9000:2000 certificate . The company has a joint venture with Suzuki Motor
Corporation of Japan . It is said that the company takes only 14 hours to make a car .
Few of the popular models of MUL are Alto , Baleno ,Swift ,Wagon – R and Zen. Maruti
Udyog limited established in 1981 , had a prime objective to meet the growing
demand of a personal mode of transport , which is caused due to lack of efficient
public transport system . The incorporation of the company was through an Act of
Parliament.

Suzuki Motor Company of Japan was chosen from seven other prospective partners
worldwide . Suzuki was due not only to it’s undisputed leadership in small cars but
also to commitments to actively bring to MUL contemporary technology and Japanese
management practices at Maruti Udyog LTD.
A Licence and a joint Venture agreement was signed between Government of India
and Suzuki Motor Company ( now Suzuki Motor Corporation of Japan ) in Oct. 1982.

Maruti Suzuki is one of India's leading automobile manufacturers and the market leader in
the car segment , both in terms of volume of vehicles sold and revenue earned. Until
recently , 18.28% of the company was owned by the Indian government , and 54.2% by Suzuki
of Japan. The Indian government held an initial public offering of 25% of the company in June
2003 . As of May 10,2007 , Government of India sold it’s complete share Indian financial
institution . With this , Govt. Of India no longer has stake in Maruti Udyog .

2.2 History
Maruti Udyog Limited was founded by the Government of India on 24 February 1981 with
Suzuki Motor Corporation as a minor partner , only to become the formal JV partner and
license holder of Suzuki in October 1982 . The first manufacturing factory of Maruti was
established in Gurugram , Haryana , in the same year .Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. Is India's
largest passenger car Company accounting for over 50% of the domestic car market . The
company offers full range of cars from entry level Maruti Alto to stylish star Swift Wagon

R Estillo and sedans DZire SX4 and sports utility vehicle Grand Vitara . The company is a
subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Corporation of Japan .The Japanese car major held 56.21% stake in
Maruti Suzuki as on 31 December 2017. The company is engaged in the business of
manufacturing purchase and sale of motor vehicles and spare parts . The other activities of
the company include facilitation of pre-owned car sales fleet Management and car financing.
They have four plants three located at Palak Gurugram Road Haryana and one located at
Manesar Industrial Town Gurgaon Haryana .

The company was formed as a government Company with Suzuki as a minor partner to make
a people’s car for middle class India . Over the years the company product range has widened
ownership has changed hands and the customer has evolved .In October 2 ,1982 , the
company signed the license and joint venture agreement with Suzuki Motor Corporation
Japan . In the year 1983 , the company started their production and launched Maruti 800. In
the year 1984 they introduced Maruti Omni and during next year they launched Maruti Gypsy
in the market.
During 2017-18 the company posted a volume growth of 13.8% in passenger vehicles in the
domestic market including the LCV and the company domestic sales growth stood at 14.5%
.During the year Company added 203 dealer workshops to the network which is the highest
ever in a single financial year . During the year the business partnership very Suzuki Motor
Corporation and Toyota Motor Corporation Japan started taking place . During the fiscal 2020
the company the company registered an overall volume decline of 16.6 % due to weak
demand environment in both the domestic and export markets .
The company operation were suspended in the latter part of March 2020 due to
unprecedented COVID -19 outbreak which lead to a nationwide shutdown of economic
activities.

2.3 Awards
• Maruti Suzuki wons 'Hall of Fame ' at NDTV car and bikes award at 2015 , for consistent
performance in last 10 years.
• ' Manufacturer of year ' by CNBC TV18 overdrive.
• Maruti Suzuki shared the PCRA Green Award with Hero Moto Corp at NDTV Car and bike
award for best fuel efficiency.
• Won Golden Peacock Award for occupational health and safety.

3. MANAGEMENT
Management :- Management is the process of conducting a set of functions
( planning , organizing , Staffing ,Directing and Controlling ) to get the work done on an
efficient and effective manner . Management is the act of getting people together to
accomplish desired goals and objectives using available resource efficiently and
effectively.
Management is needed in order to facilitate a coordinated effort towards the
accomplishment of a organizational goal.

officer ,etc. are included. Chief executive officer can be called by many names like Managing
Director , General Manager , President ,etc.

Middle level management :- In middle level management , divisional heads , departmental


heads , deputy departmental head , operational manager are included .

Lower level management :- The lower level management consists of Superior and
subordinate that executes the orders and the command of top and middle level manager,
unite the individual efforts into a common direction and achieve organizational goal
effectively and efficiently .

• Planning :- It refers to thinking before hand . Planning is the determination of a


future course of action to achieve a desire results .
Planning to plan includes developing answer to the questions and making the necessary
decisions of any actual planning process. It is critically important not to rush to the
planning process. Without clarifying the different expectation held by people in the
organization related to plan. The first step in planning is to make certain that there is
organizational commitment to the planning process. The organization keys player is
especially the chief executive officer or executive director , who are view the planning
process as important and are willing to invest time and effort behind the planning
process of organization , without the kind of obvious commitment strategic planning
process can not be successful.

Maruti Suzuki has developed a strategic plan which guides the long term operation of
the firm . The company is focused on lean manufacturing , customer satisfaction and
quality. This strategy has been adopted to minimize operational costs and at the same
time ensures that quality product are produced to meet customer requirements.
The 7 S framework developed by the McKinsey. This framework was originally
developed by deep thinking and more broadly about effectively organizing a company.
It's concept related on strategy implementation as a matter of structure and strategy .

Maruti Suzuki Ltd. Use benchmarking plan on new Zen Estilo sports car. MARUTI has
come with a refreshed version of Zen Estillo sports edition .It is not much difference
with original car , Estilo sports the MotoGP graphic sports decal on door panels and full
wheels cover on both the wheel. By applying benchmarking can not provide only
comparative data that can trigger the need for improvement, but it highlight new
improvement opportunity and gets good solution to problem
• ORGANIZING :- It refers to harmonious adjustment of various parts to achieve
common objective.
MARUTI has a functional organizational structure with horizontal linkages. The
activities are divided base on the following functions finance , marketing , engineering
and sales , spares ,production , material , parts inspection , human resources
Development, information technology and new business administration . The
centralisation is very low in Maruti as the decision making authority is quite
decentralised and disturbed across all the levels .
It is a very big organization and further divided into smaller division. There are 29
divisions in Maruti and are headed by one divisional head which is a functional post.
These divisions are divided into 132 departments and which are headed by one

departmental head which is again a functional post. In MARUTI formalization is very high all
the methods , procedure , standards are written down formally.

The structure of Maruti is flat. Generally the employees are divided into six functional
heads namely workers , technician , supervisor , executive , section manager ,
department manager and division manager.

In view of increasing competition the automotive sector for Maruti has tried to use a
project based structure to handle the problems effectively. Around two year back in
meeting of senior and middle level executives to form teams which would focus on
specific goals . Around 30 teams of 8-10 members are formed. These teams have
specific mandates in terms of cost reduction and new product development and were
given resources and authority in order to implement the project.

ORGANIZING STRUCTURE

• Staffing :- It refers to filling and keeping filled the post with people .The success of an
organization is commensurate to how adroitly every employee performed his job , the
importance of staffing function increases even more.
Maruti Suzuki hires highly qualified and talented employees that add value to the
company. The company has a team of very competent employee that are hired through
a competitive process . Maruti employees are well compensated and they are taken
through frequent training exercises to sharpen their skills.

schedule is maintained by the HR manager .

Directing refers to instructing , guiding , communicating and inspiring people so that the
objective can be achieved. It is that part of Management process which ensures the
efficiency and effectiveness of the employees. It is also called management – in – action.
Directing is a management functions which deals with the Development of effective
working methods to ensures organizational purposes are met. It is the duty of the
manager to lead or direct employees in the organization and ensures that they are doing
the right job. The overall function of the organization is to supervise and give the
necessary guidelines to attain the intended objective easily. Management should lead in
a reasonable manner with realistic expectations from its employees . This will always
ensures that there is activity among employees and is beneficial to the organization as it

Control is a primary goal – oriented function of a management in an organization. It is the
process of comparing the actual performance with the set standards of the company to
ensures that activities are performed according to the plans and not then taking corrective
action .
Every managers needs to monitor and evaluate the activities of his subordinates. It helps in
taking corrective action by the manager in the given timeline to avoid contingency or
company loss.
Controlling is performed at the lower , middle and upper level of the management.
Controlling and planning are interrelated for controlling gives an important into the next
planning process. Controlling is a backwards looking function which brings the management
cycle back to the planning function. Planning is a forward looking process as it deals with the
forecast about the future condition.

1. Establishing Standard :- It means setting up of targets which needs to be achieved to
meet organization goals eventually . Standards indicates the criteria of performance .
Control standard categories as Quantative and qualitative standards. Quantative
standards are expressed in terms of money. Qualitative standards include intangible
items.
2. Measurement of actual performance :- The actual performance of the employees is
measured against the target . With the increasing levels of the management , the
measurement of performance will become difficult.
3. Comparison of actual performance with standards :- This compares the degree of
difference between the actual performance and the standard.

4. Taking corrective action :- It is initiated by the manager who corrects any defect in
actual performance .

4 . CONCLUSION

Automobile market today is very dynamic and competitive with a range of players and
product . There are many reasons for the impressive growth of the Indian passenger car
industry. Some of these are easily availability of vehicles , finance , attractive rate of interest ,
convenient installments. In today’s cutthroat competition it is very difficult to survive . Stiff
competition has forced manufacturers to be innovative and responsive to customers
demands and needs . Maruti Suzuki India LTD. Is a leading company in Indian.
Automobile sector which occupies prominent placed due to its innovative strategic marketing
. In today’s scenario the success of the company lies in structuring and restructuring the
marketing strategies and continue innovation of the products.
The study shows that MSIL has the largest market share in the field of four wheelers in India.
Marketing strategy used by MSIL is satisfactory and appropriate to sustain in the competitive
era. The technology used by the MSIL as per economic needs and the positive EXIM policy of
India help to enhance the exports of cars.
MSIL moves towards present opportunities that is rise of Indian middle class and small cities
with booking economy.
