ACTIVITY 1

1.) Put a ✓ or X on the blank space provided before each item number. To defend your
answer, write an explanation immediately after every item.

Explanation: The keyword is “Census”. The word “Census” means a complete

enumeration of a population or groups at a point in time with respect to well defined
characteristics. Therefore, the individuals in the given statement are referring to the
people living in the US in the year 2000.

__ X __ a. People with families in the year 2000

__✓__ b. People living in the US in the year 2000

2. Determine whether the variable is categorical or quantitative?

Explanation: Even though a zipcode takes numerical values, it is a categorical variable

but not a quantitative variable because it is not quantifiable. On the other hand, family
size and annual income are quantitative variables because the numerical values are
quantifiable.

__✓__d. Family size is a quantitative variable

__✓__e. Annual income is a quantitative variable

3. Which of the following information represents a sample or the population?

Explanation: The statement “h” is an example of a sample and not a population because
about 2,000 millennials are the only militaries who passed among all the military
trainees in Tanzania. Remember, a sample is a part of the population from which we
actually collect information, which is then used to draw conclusions about the whole.
The size of the sample is always less than the total size of the population.

__✓__f. About 3,000 adults is a sample of person interviewed in their homes

__✓__g. Population of adults aged 18 and over live in households in the US.

__ X __h. A population of about 2,000 millennial passed a military training in Tanzania.

4. An individual with high I.Q. usually has an exemplary academic achievement.

Explanation: Academic achievement is a dependent variable, while the independent

variable is the genius level of one’s I.Q. The number of academic achievements depends
upon the genius level of one’s I.Q. In this case, the higher the genius level of one's I.Q.,
the more academic achievements.

__✓__i. I.Q. is an independent variable

__✓__j. Academic achievement is a dependent variable
