CRICKET

THE MOST POPULAR AND LOVED SPORTS IN INDIA


HISTORY OF CRICKET
❖ It has a known history beginning in the late 16th century.
❖ It originated in South-East England and became
country’s national sport in the 18th century.
❖ International matches have been played since 1844.
❖ It has developed globally in the 19th and 20th century.
❖ It is generally believed that cricket survived as a
children’s game for many generations before it was
increasingly taken up by adults around the world in the
beginning of 17th century.
❖ The original implements were :
I. Matted lump of sheep’s wool or small stone as the ball
II. A stick or a crook or another farm tool as the bat
III. A stool or a gate or a tree as the wicket.
❖ It was played on sheep-grazed land or in clearings.
❖ The word ‘cricket’ originally originated from the Middle
Dutch word ‘krick (-e)’ , meaning a stick.

RULES OF CRICKET
❖ It is played between two teams each made up of 11
players.
❖ It compromises of atleast one innings where one team
will take turns in batting and the other team will be
fielding/ bowling.
❖ The fielding team must get 10 batsmen out before they
can change over and start batting.
❖ The aim of the game is to score as many runs as possible
before the fielding team takes 10 wickets.
❖ The fielding team tries to get the batsmen out by:
I. Hitting the wickets with the ball when bowling
II. Catching a batsman’s shot on the full
III. Hitting the batsman’s leg in front of the wicket (LBW)
IV. Or hitting the wickets before the batsman reaches to
the other end of the pinch.
❖ Each time the batsman run one full length of the pitch it
equals to 1 run.
❖ The batsmen try to score as many runs as possible
before getting out by:
I. Hitting the ball and running between the wickets and
making it to the other end before the fielders can hit
the wickets with the ball
II. Hitting to the ball to the boundary along the ground is 4
runs.
III. Hitting the ball over the boundary on the full equals 6
runs.
❖ The weight of ball in international cricket should be
atleast 163 grams and not more than 8.81 inches in
circumference.
❖ The weight of bat in international cricket should be 1.2
to 1.4 kg with length not more than 38 inches.
❖ The height of 3 stumps should be each 28 inches and
about 1.25 inches in diameter.
SKILSS OF CRICKET
❖ BATTING -
➢ It is the most important skill of cricket as the only way to
score runs is by batting.
➢ It involves protecting the wickets, but also being able to
hit balls for four or six runs.
❖ BOWLING -
➢ It is the only way to prevent runs.
➢ Bowler is the most important player on defense in cricket
as they are bowling the ball, trying to get the batsman
out.
❖ FIELDING –
➢ The other defensive players who aren’t bowling have an
important role to play as well.
➢ As fielders, their job is to catch any ball in the air and
stop it from reaching the boundary.
❖ THROWING –
➢ It is a crucial skill for any field player in cricket.
➢ A good throw can get a batsman out very quickly.
❖ WICKET KEEPING –
➢ It is just one of the positions on the field in cricket.
➢ It involves squatting, while wearing some protective
equipments.
❖ RUNNING -
➢ Running between the wickets is a very important part of
scoring runs in cricket.
➢ Knowing when to run and when not to is very important
in order to properly score runs.
TERMINOLOGIES OF
CRICKET
❖ ASKING RATE- The runs required per over for a team to
win.
❖ BALL TAMPERING- Illegal action of changing the
condition of the ball by artificial means.
❖ BOUNCER- A short-pitched ball which passes the
batsman at chest or head height.
❖ DEAD BALL- A ball from which no runs can be scored or
wickets taken.
❖ DUCK- A score of 0.
❖ ECONOMY RATE- The average number of runs a bowler
concedes per over.
❖ EXTRAS- Runs which aren’t scored by batsmen. There
are 4 common extras: leg byes, byes, wide and no ball.
❖ FULLTOSS- A ball that reaches the batsmen without
bouncing.
❖ LEG-SIDE- Area of pitch behind the batsmen’s leg.
❖ NO BALL- Illegitimate delivery when the bowler has
overstepped on the front crease.
❖ MAIDEN- An over where no runs are scored.
❖ SPIN- A ball turning from left to right.
❖ OUT- Dismissal of the batsmen.
❖ PITCH- Cut strip in the centre field of play.
❖ STRIKE RATE- The number of runs a batsman scores per
100 balls.
❖ WIDE- A delivery that pitches too far away from
batsmen.
❖ YORKER- A delivery that is aimed at batsman’s toes or
base of stumps.
