Machine Problem 5

This document provides instructions for using Lagrange interpolation and Newton's divided differences to solve various problems. It includes tables of data values and asks the reader to: 1) Use Lagrange interpolation to find the number of families in 2007 and the year families will be 53,000 from registry office data 2) Use Lagrange interpolation to find the approximated price of an investment product at 4.75 months 3) Use Newton's divided differences to find the value of f(4.2) using different degrees of polynomials and calculate the percentage error 4) Use Newton's divided differences to find the specific heat of water at 62°C using different degrees of polynomials

Solve the following using the indicated Interpolation Method.

A. Lagrange Interpolating Polynomial:

1. Shown in the table below are the Registry Office data for the years 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014. The
table indicates the number of families for a particular locality.

Year 2002 2006 2010 2014

Families

a.) What is the approximated number of families in the year 2007?

b.) In what year will the number of families be approximately 53000?
2. In a stockbroker examination, a certain product performance (in terms of months) is presented in the
table below. If he will invest in that product at 4.75 months what would the approximated price be?
Assume a solution using Lagrange Interpolation Method @ (a) 𝑛 = 4 (b) 𝑛 = 6 (c) 𝑛 = 9

N 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

1.25 2.5 3 4.25 6.5 7.75 8 9.5 10
(months)
y (price
4.8125 5.75 7 12.3125 29.75 43.8125 47 68.75 77
in pesos)

B. Newton’s Divided Differences:

𝑥
1. Given the set of points below for 𝑓(𝑥) = 5 sin (3 − 2). Solve for the value of 𝑓(4.2). Compare
approximation (4 decimal places) using 𝑛 = 3, 𝑛 = 5 and 𝑛 = 6. Compute also for the percentage error
for each 𝑛.

N 1 2 3 4 5 6
x 0.5 2.25 3.1 3.9 5 6.34

2. To find how much heat is required to bring a kettle of water to its boiling point, you are asked to
calculate the specific heat of water at 62oC. The specific heat of water is given as a function of time in
the table shown below.

N 1 2 3 4 5
x (T℃) 22 42 52 82 100
y (sp.ht. in J/(kg-◦C) 4182 4180 4186 4200 4217

Determine the value of the specific heat at 𝑇 = 62°𝐶 using the indicated degree of the polynomial:
(a) linear (b) quadratic (c) cubic (d) quadric
