and the possible job opportunities that await you in the future. This module will emphasize
the roles and responsibilities of Industrial Engineers, and you will be able to determine
the pioneers of Industrial Engineering and their contributions.

The key goal of this module is for the students to realize how important Industrial
Engineers are.

Lesson – The Industrial Engineering Course

Different fields of Engineering

1. Computer Engineering

Computer Engineering integrates computer science and electrical

engineering to achieve more developments in digital technology,
computer networking, and computer systems. They work with
hardware and software to ensure that both are seamlessly integrated
and properly operating.
2

2. Electronics & Communication Engineering

Electronics & Communication Engineering is the concern with

electrical equipment, circuits, transmitters, receivers, and integrated
circuits (IC).

3. Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineering is a field of engineering that follows the

principles of physics and materials science for analysis, design,
manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems.

4. Civil Engineering

It is one of the broadest and oldest engineering disciplines in Civil

Engineering. A civil engineer is responsible for planning and
designing a project, building the project to the appropriate scale, and
maintenance of the project. They belong in the design and
construction of highways, bridges and tunnels, schools, dams,
hospitals, airports, and other structures, drainage systems, and
water treatment facilities.
5. Electrical Engineering

Through the use of physics, electronics, and electromagnetism the

Electrical Engineers are able to design devices that are operated by
or generate electricity. Also, Electrical engineers operate on
everything from small pocket devices to massive aircraft electrical
systems. The design and development of electrical equipment such
as transformer motors, generators, and power systems focus on high
voltage transmission.

Industry & Engineering

INDUSTRY ENGINEERING

An industry is a classification that refers to It is a scientific area and work that involves
groups of companies based on their primary taking our theoretical knowledge of the
business activities that are related. It is a natural world and using it to create, design,
profitable business or organization that and build things to solve problems and
provides people with products & services. achieve practical goals.

Three types of Industry

1. Primary Industry - It is concerned with production of goods with the help of nature.

 Genetic Industry – It is the re-production and multiplication with the

purpose of the sale of certain spices of plants and animals.
Example: Poultry farms, Piggery and Plant nursery.

 Extractive Industry – It refers to the extraction or collection of products

from the land, air, or water.
Example: Mining industry, Coal mineral and Oil industry

2. Secondary Industry - Finished products are classified as secondary industries by

the use of materials and services taken from the primary industries.

 Manufacturing Industry – It is involved in turning raw material into a

finished product with the aid of machinery and manpower.
Example: Textile plant and paper company.

 Construction Industry - It takes up the work of construction of

buildings, bridges, roads, dams, canals, etc. They use materials
produced by other industries like cement, iron rods, concrete, bricks, etc.

3. Service Industry - This industry does not manufacture tangible products, but it
produces and sells them with a cost.
Example: Hotel, tourism and entertainment.

What is Industrial Engineering?

According to Institute of Industrial Engineers…

Industrial Engineering is concerned with the design, improvement, and installation of

integrated systems of men, materials, and equipment. It draws upon specialized
knowledge and skill in the mathematical, physical, and social sciences, together with the
principles and methods of engineering analysis and design, to specify, predict, and
evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems.

FOCUS

Pioneers of Industrial Engineering

Charles Babbage

 Father of the computer.

 He also dedicated significant energy to automation and optimization
of industrial processes.
 He publishes “On the Economy of Machinery and Manufacturers”
on 1832.
5
QUEZON CITY UNIVERSITY
INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING

Frederick Winslow Taylor

 Father of Industrial Engineering & Scientific Management.

 He summed up his efficiency techniques in his book “The Principles
of Scientific Management” in 1911.
 Taylor’s Scientific Management Objectives:
 Matching employees to right job.
 Providing the proper training.
 Providing proper work methods and tools.
 Establishing legitimate incentives for work to be
accomplished.
Frank & Lillian Gilbreth

 Husband-and-wife engineering team.

 They followed the pioneering work in time and motion studies begun
by Frederick Winslow Taylor.
 They coined the term “Therblings.”
 They developed the study of workplace psychology.
 Book & Movie: “Cheaper by the Dozen.”

HENRY FORD

 In 1903, he established the Ford Motor Company.

 In 1913, he first used the moving assembly line for cars.
 He introduced revolutionary new mass production methods including
large production plants and the use of standardized, interchangeable
parts.

ELI WHITNEY

 He is the inventor of the cotton gin.

 He showed that machine tools could make standardized parts to
exact specifications.
 He developed the concept of mass production of interchangeable
parts.

Henry Laurence Gantt

 Gantt is often seen as a disciple of Taylor and a promoter of the

scientific school of management.
 Most popular legacy to management was the Gantt Chart.

The Roles & Importance of Industrial Engineering in Industry

The Industrial Engineer's role is to effectively and efficiently utilize software technology,
machine tools, mathematical and scientific principles, and human resources to find
solutions, to provide goods or services at minimal cost, and to produce at the optimum
production level on time to meet customer requirements.
Benefits for the Company
Industrial Engineering provides staff, managers, employees, and management with
support services. Its support allows the organization to be competitive in the market place.
Industrial Engineering expertise can lead to lower costs in manufacturing a quality product
through operational research.
Benefit for the Workers
Once the organization is more efficient than the competition, the demand for its goods will
increase. With demand, comes job security for the employees, and the belief that they're
contributing something to the company. Through their effort, a product desired by the
consumers can be made.
Benefits for the Management
• Identifying where problems are.
 Where is the bottleneck?
 Why aren't work schedules being met?
 What actions are necessary to reduce the rework?
 How can we decrease scrap losses?

• Recognition of work force requirements
 Work flow charts, with manning requirements supplied by Industrial
Engineering, will enable management to schedule properly.
7

INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING

• Calculation and reduction of costs

 It can efficiently assist in lowering costs by job simplification and work
participation initiatives.
• Selection of Machines & Equipment
 Providing documentation to explain the selection of equipment and
machines. This will allow management to make cost-effective decisions on
the use of their funds.
• Specifying What the Best Method Is
 Job recognition and engineering methods go hand in hand. These "tools"
are used by Industrial Engineering to assist the organization. Thanks to this
assistance, the staff, the business, and the community benefited from this.
How to become an Industrial Engineer?
Education
o Must be a graduate of Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering (BSIE)
which is a 4-years or 5-years degree.

Industrial Engineering Certification Examinations

What is PIIE Certification?
IE Certification is a voluntary decision that validates the professional qualifications of a
person in the field of industrial engineering (IE). These certifications are voluntary
procedures that verify the credentials of an applicant in the professional practice of
industrial engineering; they are not considered to be board examinations. However, those
Industrial Engineering graduate who has no credential can still practice. Taking those
certifications would give more prestige and appreciation to an industrial engineer.
Why get Certified?
 Mark of a professional.
 Enhanced status in the eyes of the public.
 Adds credibility and respect.

Certification Levels
Certified Industrial Engineering Examination (CIE Exam)
• CIE is a certification exam intended for fresh graduates of Industrial Engineering as
well as those who have relevant experience.
Qualifications:
 An active PIIE member
 A Filipino Citizen
 Graduate of BS Industrial Engineering
 Passed the CIE written exam on IE Core knowledge.

Professional Industrial Engineering Examination (PIE Exam)

• Passers of this exam are given a certification and a designation for professional
practice.
