LEARNER’S GUIDE

BEFORE YOU PROCEED with the first module of this course pack, I
encourage you to familiarize yourself with how the lessons are structured.
In each module, lessons are organized into four main sections, namely,
Activity, Analysis, Abstraction, and Application. Each section is
systematically designed to help you take in the lessons with ease and to
ensure the attainment of the lesson’s objectives. Short descriptions of these sections are
given below.

ACTIVITY

Every lesson starts with an activity. Through these learning activities, you are expected
to apply what you already know and acquire new knowledge and skills. This will bring
understanding on what you learned from the previous lessons or courses and give clarity
on what you are about to learn as you go further with the lesson.

ANALYSIS

Analysis precedes every activity. This section will enable you to process or analyze the
knowledge gained in the previous activity. It promotes a broader view of the lesson and
at the same time draws you closer to the main topics. Questions will be provided to you
to facilitate this particular thought process. You are encouraged to write your answer on

PHYSICAL EDUCATION 3 | COMPOSTELA VALLEY STATE COLLEGE

ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEPARTMENT PAGE | 28
the spaces provided for each question. You can use additional sheets of paper if
necessary.

ABSTRACTION

The discussion proper begins in the abstraction. This section is entirely focused on the
presentation of the lesson reinforced with solved examples. In this section, you are
expected to demonstrate understanding of the lesson. Answers to the questions asked
in the ‘analysis’ will also be addressed in this section as you go further with the lesson.

APPLICATION

The last section of each lesson is the application. This section encourages the practical
application of the lessons previously discussed. It describes how you are going to use
what you have previously learned. For the purpose of this module, this section shall be
considered as your graded quizzes.

ORIGIN OF THE DANCE

The dance was originated in the Panay Islands on the Visayan Islands and it
was introduced by the Spaniards during their colonization of the Philippines. It is
related to some of the Spanish dances like the bolero and the Mexican dance Jarabe
Tapatio or the Mexican Hat Dance Costumes.

COSTUMES

Originally, Carinosa was danced with Maria Clara dress and Barong Tagalog
for it is a Maria Clara Spanish Dance when it is introduced. However as the Filipino
people saw and imitated this dance, they wore the patadyong, kimona and camisa
de chino to reveal their love as a Filipino and other steps was revised to make it
more Filipino but the music did not change at all and reveals a Spanish Influence to
the Filipinos. As listed by the book of F.R. Aquino dancers may wear balintawak style
(a native dress of the Tagalog regions), camisa (a white sleeve) or patadyong,
kimona ( a dress of the Visayan of people)and for boys a barong Tagalog and colored
pants. Because it is a national dance, the dancers may wear any Filipino costumes.

MUSIC

The music of Carinosa shows a great Spanish influence to the Filipinos. It is

3/4 in rhythm like some of the Spanish dances. The Philippine Rondalla are playing

in the Philippines similar to the Spanish musicians in Spain that comprises

Abstraction

Developed in the 20th century, primarily in the United States and Germany,
modern dance resembles modern art and music in being experimental and
iconoclastic. Modern dance began at the turn of the century; its pioneers were
Isadora Duncan, Loie Fuller, and Ruth St. Denis in the United States, Rudolf von
Laban and Mary Wigman in Germany. Each rebelled against the rigid formalism,
artifice, and superficiality of classical academic ballet and against the banality of
show dancing. Each sought to inspire audiences to a new awareness of inner or
outer realities, a goal shared by all subsequent modern dancers.

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater commenced in the year 1958 when
Alvin Ailey gave a performance. The face of modern dance went through a huge
transformation in 1962 through the efforts of Trisha Brown belonging to the New
York's Judson Dance Theater. In 1970's, this artistic expression evolved to d higher

PHYSICAL EDUCATION 3 | COMPOSTELA VALLEY STATE COLLEGE

ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEPARTMENT PAGE | 37
level incorporating many radical views and gained footing across the globe. The
dance form of ballet came into limelight in the decade of the 1980's with Mark
Morris, Twyla Tharp, Eliot Feld and Karole Armitage as prominent figures. Soon after,
the scenario was ruled by the legendary star, Michael Jackson, whose name remains
embedded in the hearts of dance lovers. His exclusive movements such as the
moonwalk stand as a landmark in the history or dance. Gradually innovations crept
in, paving the way for contemporary dance forms.

GERMAN CONTRIBUTIONS

Although often considered an American phenomenon, the evolution modern

dance can also be traced to central Europe and Germany, where the most influential
was probably Rudolf von Laban. Although there is almost no documentation to
describe his choreography, he founded a school in Munich in 1910 in which Mary
Wigman was one of his students. Exiled in the 1930's, he immigrates to England,
where he established the Art of Movement Studio in Manchester in 19*0 and
worked on his system of notation until he died.

Today, the development of modern dance can also be attributed to different

groups like that or the SankaiJuku, a group of Japanese dancers trained in modern
and classical dance. Their work is based on "butoh”, a form of dance theatre that
avoids structured choreography and strives to express primitive emotions by making
minimal use of costume and actual movement.

A legendary star, Michael Jackson, whose name remains embedded in the

hearts of dance lovers is always remembered to date. His exclusive movements such
as the moonwalk stand as a landmark in the history or dance. Gradually innovations
crept in, paving the way for contemporary dance forms.

HIP HOP

Hip hop is a dance style, usually danced to hip hop music that evolved from
the hip hop culture. The first dance associated with hip hop was break dancing.
While break dancing consists primarily of moves executed close to the ground, the
majority or hip hop moves are done standing up. It includes a wide range of styles
notably breaking, locking and popping which were created in the 1970s and made
popular by dance crews in the United States.

CRAMPING

PHYSICAL EDUCATION 3 | COMPOSTELA VALLEY STATE COLLEGE

ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEPARTMENT PAGE | 38
Popularized in the United States, cramping is characterized by free,
expressive, exaggerated, and highly energetic movement involving the arms, head,
legs, chest, and feet. The youths who started cramping saw the dance as a way for
them to escape gang life and "to release anger, aggression and frustration positively,
in a non-violent way.
Cramping (also known as clown dancing or clowning) is a style of dance that
originated in the African-American community of South Central Los Angeles,
California. It involves elaborate face-painting and freestyle dance moves usually
performed in competition with other crews.
