1. CLASS DISCUSSION: Understanding what’s required for assessment 1 (15 min)

2. In your own words, explain your understanding of the following terms.

a) Sociological imagination a personn is able to see things socially and how they have mutual
connection and effects.

b) Ethical reasoning is viewed as the rights and wrongs of human conduct. Each individual has
standards that are defined by their personal values which come into play when he faces certain
decisions or dilemmas.

c) Critical thinking is the objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in order to form a judgement

3. How can these concepts help you to understand the issues arising from the relationship
between Business, Society and Government?

Based on these concepts, I can perceive that B-S-G is one that is indispensable. Business connect
individuals into a group to exploit their creativity, support, and innovation to produce values demanding
for the social needs. While, Society are those who sell their ability, perspectives as well as cultures to
the business to make things better. Government regulate the playing field as the whole to protect other
two components against immorale which is inevitable in the competitive maarket.

4. After reading the excerpt below (from The Sociological Imagination, Mills C.W. 2000/1959 New
York: Oxford University Press, pp. 8-9), discuss an example of a major ‘issue’ and a related
key ‘trouble’ in contemporary society.

5. After watching the excerpt from the film “Go Big”, discuss the following:

a) The main problems presented and how they are relevant to the topic of the week.
The main problem in the film is that business does not have a complete judgement on their customers.
It is unfair for people in low social classes.

b) The conflicts stemming from the interaction between business and society.
Business just expects to gain profits as much as possible by choosing to service between white and
blue collars. They felt if white collars were serviced well, they would be willing to pay exceptional prices
which are beneficial to business. If there were no working- class people, who could generate products to
bring back values to business?

c) The ethical dilemmas.

Ethical dilemmas are situations in which there is a choice to be made between
two options, neither of which resolves the situation in an ethically acceptable
fashion. In such cases, societal and personal ethical guidelines can provide no
satisfactory outcome for the chooser.

d) If we see this film as an expression of the sociological imagination, what can we learn about the
relationship between business and society
For the ethical dilemmas, we recognize that everybody needs mutual support to develop further and
overcome in uncertain time. They are like our body parts which are functional synchronously. If one
were lost, the whole system would be hard to operate efficiently.

e) What would have been the situation if the two young entrepreneurs had used ethical reasoning?
Actions or policies that affect other people always have an ethical dimension, but
while some people restrict ethical issues to actions that can help or harm others
(social ethics) others include personal and self-regarding conduct (personal ethics).
