Useful and Harmful Materials Part - 1 Sci

This document discusses useful and harmful household materials. It provides examples of antiseptics and disinfectants that are commonly used cleaning materials and classifies them as either useful or harmful based on their properties and intended uses. Useful materials can be reused or recycled and do not easily pollute the environment when disposed of properly. Harmful materials are toxic, can cause injury, and more easily pollute the environment if not disposed of correctly. The document also discusses pesticides like herbicides, fungicides and their harmful effects on health and the environment if misused or overexposed.

USEFUL &

HARMFUL
MATERIALS
1. HOUSEHOLD CLEANING
MATERIALS
- Prepared by T. Katie Ochave
ALL MATERIALS ARE USEFUL!

HOWEVER, they can also be

harmful to humans, and to
the environment if not
properly used and properly
disposed.
The usability of a certain
material depends on its
properties.
There are materials that are
made to last long and therefore
can be reused many times.
(Polyethylene
Terephthalate)

(High-Density
Polyethylene)
There are also materials that
are made for certain purposes
only and can be harmful when
not used or disposed of
properly.
USEFUL MATERIALS
➢ are materials that serves its purpose
➢ can be used for other purposes
➢ can be recycled
➢ can be dumped straight into a landfill
➢ something can be recovered from these kind of materials
HARMFUL MATERIALS
➢ materials that are toxic to humans
➢ can cause injury
➢ can be recycled
➢ can pollute the environment easily
➢ cannot be dumped straight into a landfill
➢ take too much time to decompose
COMMON HOUSEHOLD
MATERIALS AND THEIR
CLASSIFICATION
ANTISEPTIC

It is a substance that stops

or slows down the growth of
microorganisms.
USES OF ANTISEPTIC
1. Handwashing.
2. Disinfecting mucous membranes
mucous membrane – nose, mouth, lungs, and stomach
3. Cleaning skin before an operation.
4. Treating skin infections.
5. Treating throat and mouth infections.
EXAMPLES
DISINFECTANT
• Disinfectants can remove or destroy
microorganisms from objects.

• Have higher concentrations, which are

not suitable to use on the skin or
mucous membranes.
EXAMPLES
ANTISEPTIC DISINFECTANT

1. Destroy microbes and inhibit 1. Destroys microbes

their growth.
2. Can cause harm to living tissue
2. Do not harm living tissue
3. Used to clean bathrooms, walls,
3. Used in wounds, cuts, and floors and other non-living
infected skin. objects.
HARMFUL EFFECTS
1. Skin irritation - Excessive use of hand sanitizers, can cause
irritation as it strips away the skin’s natural oils.
2. Dry and broken skin - The alcohols present in hand
sanitizers can dry and damage skin cells.
3. Respiratory conditions - Inhaling small particles of
disinfectants can cause coughing and may impair
respiratory functions.
4. Liver damage - Some disinfectants, when exposed in large
doses, can harm the kidneys and cause liver disease.
NOTE:
Use Cleaning Products with Care:
• It is okay to use cleaning products,
but wear protective gear like
masks, goggles, and gloves when
handling these chemicals.
PESTICIDE
1. These are chemical compounds that are used to
kill pests including:
➢ Insects
➢ Rodents,
➢ fungi, and
➢ Unwanted plants (weed)

2. They are used in public health to kill vectors of

diseases
In agriculture, to kill pests that damage crops.
HERBICIDE
Are chemical substances
used to control the growth or
kill unwanted plants such as
weeds and grass
FUNGICIDE
- are chemical substances used to
kill or prevent the growth of fungi that
damage plants
Examples:
➢Mildew
➢Blights
➢Molds
FUNGICIDE

➢ Mold
➢ Mildew ➢ Blight
HARMFUL EFFECTS
1. Increased in pollution
2. Pesticides can kill bees and will result to declined pollinators
3. In addition to killing insects or weeds, pesticides can be toxic to
other organisms including birds, fish, beneficial insects, and non-
target plants.
4. Exposure to these chemicals may cause cancer, kidney and liver
damage, birth defects, and neurotoxicity.
If any individual
continuously eat
contaminated food, it
will accumulate (build-
up) in the body and can
cause serious illness.
