(2712 Guz Hence, 2712 is greater than 923. We write 2712 > 923 or 923 is less than 2712 which is written as 923 < 2712. If the number of digits are equal, we start comparing the digits one by one in the two given numbers from the left. Example 2 a. Compare 7456 and 6743 b. ARRANGING NUMBERS When several numbers are given, they are arranged one after the other and the digits are compared starting from the left. The greatest or the smallest of them is then found out. Example 3 Arrange the given numbers in descending and ascending orders and find out the greatest and the smallest numbers. 7634, 9984, 9097, 1088, 7986 Looking at the numbers, we find that the numbers 9984 and 9097 have the largest number 9 in the thousands place. The digits are same in the thousands place. In the hundreds place, 9 > 0. Hence 9984 > 9097. The numbers 7634 and 7936 are numbers starting with 7 which is the next larger number.
