BEED 2A
Maria Corazon Cojuangco Aquino better known as Cory Aquino was born on January 25, 1933 in Paniqui,
Tarlac and was the sixth of eight children of José Cojuangco, a former congressman, and Demetria Sumulong, a
pharmacist. Both Aquino's parents came from prominent clans. In her early schools, she was top of her class and
graduated her college education in the U.S. graduating from the College of Mount Saint Vincent in 1953 in New York,
with a major in French and minor in mathematics. After graduating from college, she returned to the Philippines and
studied law at Far Eastern University in 1953. She later met Benigno "Ninoy" S. Aquino Jr.—son of the late Speaker
Benigno S. Aquino Sr. and a grandson of General Servillano Aquino. She discontinued her law education and married
Ninoy in Our Lady of Sorrows church in Pasay on 11 October 1954. And had five children.
We came across a primary source of the late President of the Philippines, Maria Corazon C. Aquino during
the Joint Session of the U.S. Congress on September 18, 1986 delivered at Washington, D.C. The Congress of the
United States is defined in the Constitution as the power to lay and collect taxes, borrow money on the credit of the
United States, regulate commerce, coin money, declare war, raise and support armies, and make all laws necessary
for the execution of its powers. Her former presidency, Corazon Aquino of the Republic of the Philippines spoke to
appeal for help as the Philippines is reckoning with everything the deposed dictator, Ferdinand Marcos’s
administration had inflicted to the country with 26 billion dollars total foreign debt, stating her gratitude to the U.S.
Congress, and her pure promising action towards the restoration of the real democracy and the heartful service to
the Filipino people. During her speech, the evidences shows that the information is logical and based from truth. She
proclaimed freedom, democracy, justice and liberty.
As she entered the congress, enthusiastic rounding applause from various leaders and members of the
congress were given to her as she was accompanied by the House of Representatives, some leaders and members of
the Senate. She started by expressing the dire straits of Philippine democracy under President Marcos, in detail she
expressed the crimes committed with the help of military force and supported it by the expression of defiance,
committed by her husband in his cause to restore democracy to his beloved country.
The regaining of the beloved democracy started when his husband was shot dead, as he was a fierce critic
and enemy of the tyranny brought by Marcos. With this great tragedy was not extinguished but instead beamed
brighter as the hope of democracy was lit ablaze, and the fight to regain it inherited by Ninoy’s wife and now widow
Cory. Continuing on the struggle to regain it, the people held fervently as women watchers wept with tears of horror
when men came crashing at polling stations to remove the ballots. But yet again Cory enhances the people’s thirst
for constitutional democracy, and drives them to believe in her cause that as the results were announced, they took
to the streets and peacefully protested the cause of democracy under threat at arms. And when central military
leaders capitulated, the entire regime came crashing down, a bloodless revolution with God as witness has blessed
her country and her cause to regain their beloved democracy.
But the challenge continues for the casus belli for the entire implementation of martial law was still at large,
groups of communist insurgents plagued the country. In keeping democracy, she referred to one of America’s great
leaders Abraham Lincoln, who viewed the use of force necessary and like Lincoln she pointed out that she does not
cherish it. For she would use everything in her power, as long as that option is still available, in the attempt to regain
maintain and preserve democracy with no bloodshed. Whilst keeping the option of brute force as a choice she
would not like to make as if to say “I will try peaceful means as long as you do the same”.
The main idea in Cory’s speech revolved around democracy, how to regain it and how to maintain it. During
that period, her speech was like an empowerment to all Filipinos seeking for freedom and new democracy. She
spoke in English language to influence the setting and the meaning of her words is so powerful that she managed to
sway the house with her historic speech and asked for financial aid towards rebuilding the Philippine economy.
Indeed, her speech is heart-warming. She expressed her intentions with conviction and resolve. She received
a standing ovation and applause from various dignified leaders in the congress and receive amazing compliments
that entitled her speech as one of the finest speeches of the former presidents that will flow down to every roots of
our history.
