CONCEPT NOTES:
A RELATION is a rule that relates values from a set of values ( called DOMAIN)
to a second set of values ( RANGE). The relation is a set of ordered pairs (x,y).
Example: DOMAIN RANGE
M 2
A 6
T 1
H 7
The Domain is the {M, A, T, H} and the range is the {2, 6, 1, 7}.
DOMAIN RANGE
2
6
M 1
7
A FUNCTION is a relation where each element in the domain is related to ONLY
ONE value in the range by some rule. A function is a set of ordered pairs (x, y) such that
no two ordered pairs have the same x-value but different y-values.
Using functional notation, we can write f (x) = y , read as “f of x is equal to y”. In
particular, if (1, 2) is an ordered pair associated with the function f, then we say that f (2)
= 1.
Example: DOMAIN RANGE
M 2
A 6
T 1
H 7
The ordered pairs are {(M, 2), (A, 6), (T, 1) (H, 7)}

CONCEPT NOTES:
Evaluating a function means replacing the variable in the function, in this case x, with a
value from the function’s domain and computing for the result. To denote that we are
evaluating f at x for some x in the domain of f, we write f(x).
CONCEPT NOTES:
Adding, subtracting, and multiplying two or more functions together will result in
another function. Dividingfunctions together will also result in another function if the
denominator or divisor is not zero function.
Definition
(a) Their sum ,denoted by f + g, is the function defined by (f + g)(x)=f(x)+g(x)
(b) Their difference, denoted by f-g, is the function defined by (f-g)(x)=f(x)-g(x)
(c) Their product, denoted by f.g, is the function defined by (f . g)(x) = f(x) . g(x)
(d) Their quotient, denoted by f/g, is the function defined by (f/g)(x) = f(x)/g(x),
excluding values of x where g(x)=0
Example. Determine the following functions using
• f (x) = x + 3 g (x) = 𝑥𝑥 2 + 2𝑥𝑥 − 8
𝑥𝑥+7
• p (x) = 2x – 7 h (x) =
2−𝑥𝑥
𝑥𝑥−2
• v (x) = 𝑥𝑥 2 + 5𝑥𝑥 + 4 t (x) =
𝑥𝑥+3
