Example of an MOU for the Development of Academic Cooperation

MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING
***U,
AND
KALAMAZOO COLLEGE,
MICHIGAN, USA
FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF ACADEMIC COOPERATION
IN INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION

The general objective of this Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is to stimulate and facilitate the
development of collaborative and mutually beneficial programs which serve to enhance the intellectual life and
cultural development on both campuses, and to contribution to increased international cooperation. Thus, ***
U (*** U) and KALAMAZOO COLLEGE (KC) have agreed that in support of their mutual interests in the
field of education and research:

1. The two Educational Institutions will:


a) cooperate in the exchange of information relating to their activities in teaching and research in fields of
mutual interests;
b) promote appropriate joint research projects and joint courses of study, with particular emphasis on
internationally funded projects;
c) endeavor to encourage students and staff to spend periods of time in the host University. The exchange
of students a ill be dependent on the execution of a formal Student Exchange Agreement prior to
commencement of this activity:
d) conduct short courses, as mutually agreed in writing between the parties prior to commencement of this
activity:
e) conduct cultural projects, a, mutually agreed in writing between the parties prior to commencement of
this activity:
f) conduct study tours, a, mutually agreed in writing between the parties prior to commencement of this
activity.
2. Facilitate the exchange of undergraduate students. Such exchanges may take place for a period normally of
one academic year (or at least one term or semester). The academic standing of such students shall be
determined by the host University. Exchange students will be accorded the rights and privileges of students
in the host country in accordance with the regulations of the host University relating to students and will be
admitted under the terms and conditions relevant to the host University.

Accreditation for the academic work carried out by an undergraduate student during the period of study at
the host University will be at the discretion of the student's home university.

3. Work to develop an articulation agreement that poll ides a means for Kalamazoo College graduates to apply
for admission to selected graduate degree programs at *** U.

4. Admission to a specific department or course is subject Only to a student being satisfactorily qualified for the
chosen area of study and to the availability of resources in the period for which admission is sought.

5. The aim of the Memorandum of Understanding shall be to achieve a broad balance in the respective
contributions and benefits of the collaboration, and this shall be subject to periodic review by both
Universities.
6. Academic members of staff and other personnel of one partner institution may spend periods not normally
exceeding one academic year in the other partner institution. In supporting such an arrangement. the home
institution undertakes to continue the salary of the participant. All other financial matters, including travel
costs, are subject to individual negotiation, and will normally be the responsibility of the persons involved and
their home institution.

7. The host institution agrees to assist in the seeking of appropriate housing, and to supply work space, library and
technical facilities as appropriate.

8. In the implementation of specific cooperative programs, a written agreement covering all relevant aspects
including funding and the obligations to be undertaken by each party will be negotiated, mutually agreed and
formalized in writing, prior to the commencement of the program.

9. K C shall not hold *** liable for any damage that is caused. Whether directly or indirectly, by KC. *** shall
not hold KC liable for any damage that is caused, whether directly or indirectly, by ***.

10. KC will indemnify any loss suffered by *** that is caused. whether directly or indirectly, by the KC * * *
w i l l indemnify any loss suffered by the KC that is caused. whether directly or indirectly, by USI.

This agreement will take effect from the date of its signing and shall be valid for an unlimited period from that
date unless sooner terminated, revoked OF modified by mutual written agreement between tile Parties, and
may be extended by mutual written agreement.

Either party may terminate the Agreement at any time during tile term by the provision of three months
written notice to the other party.
