SIGNIFICANCE OF HANDWORK

Following are the significance of handwork in Montessori curriculum,

1. Every human has free spirit, values and thoughts that seeks to materialize in some form of
work and hand is the tool to achieve this task.
2. The introduction of the handwork in the Montessori curriculum is important for the
development of children interest in the culture including arts, crafts and handwork.
3. Children also enable to discover that their hands can be the medium of expression
and creativity like sounds (language) and body movement (dancing).
4. The handwork is the aim to encourage the child to use hands to create aesthetical pleasant
objects which develop his creativity and satisfy his inner needs of expression.
5. The handwork helps the child to be a useful citizen and contributing member of the
community.
6. Children get an extensive sensorial experience through the handwork to learn their
environment and survive in it, as according to Dr. Maria Montessori, during 3 to 6 years
of age the child’s hand is the instrument of the mind.
7. Handwork provide an excellent means to help children develop productive and creative skills
while using their hands to manipulate different kinds of materials.
8. Handwork justify the need of children that they are using their hands.
9. Handwork helps the child to develop eye-hand coordination.
10. Children gain more control over their movements through handwork and instruments become
more obedient to their will.
11. While the child carries out the handwork. the purposeful activities and making crafts, his/her
confidence and self-esteem improves along with enjoying a great sense of achievement.
12. Several handwork activities move around the mathematical knowledge like
symmetry, asymmetry, geometry, arithmetic and accurate measurements.
13. Handwork teaches children to utilize the proper tools like brushes, scissors, paints etc. in
order to produce a specific piece of art.
14. Handwork introduce the child to the great wealth of possibilities of what hands can
create with simple materials.
15. Art work also enhance the observation ability of the children for the world around them and
they get inspire later use in their handworks.
16. This handwork experience by children can lead them to take it as hobby or profession
in future and spend quality time.
