Instructional Module for the Course

Soils1100 - PRINCIPLES OF SOIL SCIENCE

Module 1 - Introduction to Soil

Science

Overview

In this module, basic principles and concepts regarding

functions of soil resource, its genesis and formation, the dynamism
of its composition, and profiling will be discussed. It also introduces
the relationships of soil to current concerns in sustainable
agricultural land use and upholding the environmental quality of
agroecosystem. This course inculcates the awareness of soil
utilization that can lead to conservation or degradation as a natural
resource. Management practices in this resource has a considerable
influence not only on human society but the life in general.
The topics that will be discussed in this module are as
follows; • Importance and functions of the soil as a natural
resource • Definition and composition of soil
• Soil Genesis: Soil Formation and development
• The study of soil profile

I. Objectives

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to;

1. Link the importance of soil in its different functions as a resource. 2.

Inculcate the basic foundation of soil as a body of science in
agricultural environment.
3. Understand the process of soil formation and its function in soil
science.
4. Explain the development of soil based on pedogenic approach as part of
the geologic processes.
II. Learning Activities

Photos and diagrams will be provided in the student handout to facilitate

visual comprehension of the functionality of soil as a natural resource. These
illustrations will captivate the thinking ability of the students to understand clearly
the intricate process of
soil formation.
Video clips from
youtube that has been
reviewed and validated
into scientific fact will
also be use in this
module. This
presentation of
learning activities
further enhanced the
eagerness of the
student to comprehend
the topics being
presented.

genesis and formation as well in weathering processes will also facilitated in this
module. The use of open free software such as the Open Broadcaster Software
(OBS) for live streaming in the facebook page will be included in the module. This
modality will encourage the students to actively participate in class discussions
and allow them to express their comments and queries with regards to the topics
being discussed. Furthermore, peer discussions will also induce in this learning
activity.

Discussions among their classmates regarding the level of their

comprehension in the topics will provide additional learning among themselves.
Lastly, instructional videos will also provide to guide the students in their
laboratory exercises. Methodological procedure of laboratory activities in rocks
and minerals as well as in soil profile topics will cover in the video clips.
Necessary information/data will be provided such as the identity of rocks and
minerals as well as the soil depth for each horizons in the soil profile. The
information/data will serve and use as primary component of the laboratory
exercises to complete the laboratory report.

III. Assessment
A 10-point quiz in multiple choice will be given in the topics without
corresponding laboratory exercises. Laboratory reports will be evaluated based
on how the student answers the questions being asked in the assessment form.
Template for the laboratory reports will be provided. These are downloadable in
the Google Classroom platform. Online assessment for both quizzes and
laboratory reports are also in the Google Classroom platform.

Below is a Practice questionnaire for short quiz assessment for this

module.
