Technical Drawing 8 (Quarter 2 - Week 3)

- The document discusses ratio and proportion in technical illustrations. It defines ratio as a comparison of two numbers using a colon or fraction, and proportion as an equation with equal ratios on each side that can be used to find unknown values. - Examples are given of finding ratios from figures and using cross multiplication in proportions to solve for unknown values like the length of Rectangle B given its width and knowing it is proportionate to Rectangle A. - An activity asks students to find ratios from given figures, reduce to lowest terms if possible, and use proportions to solve for the value of n in additional figures.

Technical Drawing 8

2nd Quarter, Week 3

S.Y. 2021-2022

Name: ____________________________________ Date: _____________________

Section: ___________________________________ Score: ____________________

Topic: Ratio and Proportion

Learning Competency: Perform calculation needed to complete task by applying trade mathematics/
mensuration (TLE_ICTTD7/8MC-0g-2)
Learning Target: To find ratio and proportion of technical illustrations
Reference: Competency-Based Learning Material (Second Year) – Drafting Technology
CONCEPT NOTES:

RATIO AND PROPORTION

 Ratio
- is a comparison of two numbers.
- generally, it separates two numbers in a ratio with a colon (:)
Example:
a) Suppose we want to write the ratio of 8 and 12. We can write this as 8:12 or as fraction 8/12, and we
say the ratio is “Eight is to twelve”.

b) From the figure, the ratio of width to length is 5:10. Given that
the width of figure is 5mm and the length is 10mm. It can also
be reduced to lowest term ratio of 1:2.

 Proportion
- is an equation with a ratio on each side.
- it is a statement that two ratios are equal.
When one of the four numbers in a proportion is unknown, cross products may be used to find the unknown
number. This is called solving the proportion. Question marks or letters are frequently used in place of the
unknown number.
Example:
1 n
a) Solve for n: =
2 4
Using cross products, we see that:
2xn=1x4
2n = 4 ; Dividing both sides by 2
2 2
n=2
1 2
Therefore, = is a proportion.
2 4

b) Given the figure and dimensions, find the length of Rectangle B if it is in proportion with Rectangle A.

B
A

Solution:
The ratio of width to length of Rectangle A is 2:4. The ratio of width to length of Rectangle B is
4:n. Then, using the ratio of Rectangle A and B, we can now get the length of Rectangle B using
proportion.
2 4
Proportion: =
4 n
Using cross products, we see that:
2xn=4x4
2n = 16 ; Dividing both sides by 2
2 2
n=8
Therefore, the length of Rectangle B is 8mm.

ACTIVITY:
A. Find the ratio of length to width of the following given figures. Reduce to lowest term ratio if possible.

1. ______ 3. _______

2. ______ 4. _______

B. Using proportion, find the value of n in the following figures. Kindly show your solutions. (7pts each)
