PAINTING

Why did I start painting?

Basically I started painting for fun and because I found it amazing and sort
of entertaining. I also want to be good at it like my friend during senior high, so
I tried making arts. I actually started with sketches and drawings because I was
very much interested in anime back then that is why I made fan arts that weren’t
that good but I was very much happy with my arts.
I officially started using paints and exploring more on painting when I was
sixteen. I think that’s a pretty late age to start arts but, nothing’s ever too
late I guess. So I started with acrylic paint as a medium and then I jumped into
oil paints. I wasn’t a big fan of watercolor although it’s actually a good medium,
but I only started using it when I went to Architecture school.

Why should I start painting?

Painting is fun and a good stress reliever. If you are looking for a hobby,
then you might as well consider painting. You can express yourself with your art.
You could also bring out emotions and just everything with every splatter of paint.
Painting can have an impact with your life. It brings joy and fulfillment, it
also tests your patience but will always end up with satisfaction.

What to know as a beginner?

- don’t invest on expensive paints
If you are just exploring and getting to know your art style, you
shouldn’t go crazy about buying expensive paints because trust me, you’ll end
up wasting paints while on the process of learning. There are sets of cheaper
paints specifically for beginners, so you could just grab them and go. As you
progress you could buy the more expensive paint sets and you would be able to
use them wisely.
Note: The more expensive paints have more pigments, just like make ups :)

-invest on more expensive paint brushes

Okay, so unlike the paints, paint brushes lasts as long as you handle and
clean them properly, so if you plan on going out and buying some paint
brushes, you might as well consider buying the more expensive one because it’s
just like an investment, besides you’ll be able to use them for years.
Also, good quality of paint brushes helps in better blending of your arts.
But before you go ahead and purchase these brushes, it’d be better if you do
some researches on the functions of the brushes, because there are tons of
kinds of paint brushes out there.
Note: When cleaning your paint brushes, make sure to get all the paint
from the bristles and dry it with towel or tissue paper before air drying it.
Do not use the paint brush you use for acrylic paints and oil paints. Also,
watercolor paint brush is different from the acrylic paint brushes.

-it is better to use acrylic or watercolor first

When starting out, you might as well consider using acrylic paints first
because it is a lot cheaper and less messy (in my own opinion)
When using acrylic paints or watercolor, you will only need water as a
medium. When washing and cleaning your paint brushes you will only use water
as well.
While on the other hand, when you use Oil paints, you will need oil as a
medium (in my case I used linseed oil). You will also need paint thinner to
wash your brushes and to clean your hands. Consider the scent, oil paint have
stronger odor than acrylics, so if you have a small painting room or just like
in my case that I paint in my room, might as well consider skipping oil
painting first.

NOTE: medium is the solvent you use to control the consistency of the
paint.

-you can also use any kind of paper for painting

Canvases are not necessarily the painting base. You can also use basic and
simple kinds of paper when beginning your painting exploration. And you won’t
feel guilty about throwing them away.
-when you want to use canvas already, buy the boarded and ready-to-paint
canvas
When I was starting out, I didn’t know much about canvases, so I went
ahead to the nearest cloth shop and looked for canvases, turns out that it
needed some primer and a lot of work for making a board base. So it’s better to
buy those ready-to-paint acid free canvas that they sell on any stationery
shops. It saves you so much time and money.

-focus on your style

It is good to look for inspirations on the interned when it comes to
painting, but sometimes it’s also good to just make your own art. Own your
style because everybody have their own signature.

-don’t get discouraged

When I was just starting out painting, I felt discouraged because I was
brainwashed by all those beautiful paintings I see on pinterest and on
Instagram. But remember they were once a beginner just like you and they did
have bad arts too. So don’t give up and just keep on practicing.

-don’t compare your arts to others

All artist have different styles when it comes to painting because there
are varieties of painting styles and techniques. And what might work for other
doesn’t always work for you, so don’t compare your work if it leads you to
disappointment. Just express yourself with your art and be happy with what you
are doing.

- paint every time you can

If you paint consistently, you would find yourself improving more. So
consistency is the key.
