PART-B (3×25 =75M)

Answer any THREE Questions

1. a )The power reflected from an aircraft received by a radar is described by and exponential
distribution given by f X ( x )=(1/10)e− x/10 , x>0. The average power is 10 W. What is the
probability that the received power is greater than the average power? (12)

b) Consider an RV defined by sample space { -1, -0.5, 0.7, 1.5, 3] and the associated probabilities

{0.1, 0.2, 0.1, 0.4, 0.2}. Draw the CDF for this case. [13)

2. A communication system consists of 3 transmitter symbols 0, 1 and 2. Define appropriate events Ai

and Bi. I=1,2, 3 to represent symbols after and before the channel respectively. Assume channel
transition probabilities are all equal at P(Ai/Bi)=0.1, I is not equal to j, and are P(Ai/Bi)=0.8 for I is equal
to j while sybol transmission probabilities are P(Bi)=0.5 ,0.3 and 0.2 respectively for i=1,2 and 3.

a. Sketch diagram relationg transmission and reception probabilistically.

b. Compute recived symbol probabilities.
c. Compute the aposteriri probabilities.
d. Repeat b and c for equal transmission symbol probabilities.

3 a. State properties of single pdf and two-dimensional pdf.

b. Given f(x,y)=u(x)u(y)xexp(-x(y+1)) find marginel density functions.
4. a. Derive pdf and cdf conditions for statistical independence of two random variables
b. Consider a linear transformation Y=T(X)=aX+b, where a and b are any real constants. Find
f Y ( y ). Consider that X is a general Gaussian distributed RV. Find the pdf of the transformed RV.

5. a. Let X be a random variable and Y be equal to -6X+22. Let X have mean of 3 and
variance of 2. Check for orthogonality and uncorrelatedness between X and Y.
