Som - Am2200 Assignment - 2

1) Determine the angle θ and load P required to make the average normal stress in rod AB 1.5 times that in rod BC, without exceeding 80 MPa for either rod. 2) Calculate the average normal and shear stresses in links AB and CD and pins A and B of a two-tine grapple supporting a 4 Mg log, assuming both single and double shear in the pins. 3) Determine the equivalent stresses on an element oriented 60° counter-clockwise from a given element, using stress transformation equations.

Assignment – 2

1. Rods AB and BC each have a diameter of 4 mm. Determine the angle θ so

that the average normal stress in rod AB is 1.5 times that in rod BC. What is
the load P that will cause this to happen if the average normal stress in each
rod is not allowed to exceed 80 MPa?

2. Determine the average normal stress developed in links AB and CD and the
average shear stress developed in pins A and B of the smooth two-tine grapple
that supports the log having a mass of 4 Mg. The cross-sectional area of each
link is 450 mm2. Each pin has a diameter of 30 mm and is subjected to double
shear. Also calculate the average shear stress developed in pins A and B
assuming the pins are subjected to single shear.
3. Determine the equivalent state of stress on an element if it is oriented 60°
counter clock wise from the element shown. Use the stress-transformation
equations. Show the result on a sketch.

4. A shear wall in a reinforced concrete building is subjected to a vertical

uniform load of intensity q and a horizontal force H, as shown in the first part
of the figure. (The force H represents the effects of wind and earthquake
loads.) As a consequence of these loads, the stresses at point A on the surface
of the wall have the values shown in the second part of the figure (compressive
stress equal to 10 MPa and shear stress equal to 4 MPa).

(a) Determine the principal stresses and show them on a sketch of a properly oriented
element.
(b) Determine the maximum shear stresses and associated normal stresses and show
them on a sketch of a properly oriented element.
5. (a) Draw Mohr’s circle and use it to find the principal stresses and the
orientation of the principal axes of stress for the following case of plane stress:
σx = -120 MPa ; σy = 50 MPa ; τxy = 100 MPa

(b) Using the above constructed Mohr’s circle, find the stress components on an
element inclined at 30o to the xy axes.

6. The stress acting on two planes at a point is indicated. Determine the shear
stress on plane a-a and the principal stresses at the point.
