This document provides instructions for a learning activity sheet in Grade 10 English for the second quarter. Students are asked to practice defining unfamiliar words using formal definitions, which consist of four parts: the term being defined, a verb, the general category or class, and what differentiates the term. Examples of formal definitions are provided. Students are then given two tasks - to look up unfamiliar words from a myth and define them formally, and to provide formal definitions for 10 given terms using a dictionary.

CONCEPT NOTES
WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU SEE UNFAMILIAR WORD OR
TERM? Words maybe defined in two ways: INFORMAL and
FORMAL defining of terms.
A definition is a logical technique that reveals the meaning of
a term or word. It specifies the necessary and sufficient conditions
for being a member of a specific set, enabling the writer to set
boundaries or limits that separate the term from any other term.
A FORMAL sentence DEFINITION consists of four
components: species (term defined) + verb + genus (general
category) + differentia (what makes the term different from other items in the category). Also, it can also
be done this way: the word itself, the part of speech it belongs to and its description.
