Chapter No.2 Ac Circuits

The document defines time period and RMS value of an AC wave. Time period is the time required for one complete cycle of an alternating quantity, measured in seconds. RMS value is the square root of the mean of the squares of the instantaneous values over one cycle, or the DC value that produces the same heating effect as the AC over time. It also defines frequency as the number of cycles completed per second, measured in hertz. Form factor is defined as the ratio of RMS value to average value of an alternating quantity. Other key points covered are calculating frequency, RMS value, phase difference and amplitude from a given AC current equation, and defining cycle, frequency, phase and average value for an AC circuit.

Q. Define time period and RMS value of an a.c. wave.

2marks
Ans:
1) Time Period:
It is the time required for an alternating quantity to complete one cycle.
It is measured in second.
2) RMS Value of Sinusoidal AC Waveform:
The RMS value is the Root Mean Square value. It is defined as the
square root of the mean value of the squares of instantaneous values of
the alternating quantity over one cycle.
OR
For an alternating current, the RMS value is defined as that value of
steady current (DC) which produces the same heat or power as is
produced by the alternating current during the same time under the
same conditions.

Q. Draw neat connection diagram to measure voltage, current, power in an a.c

resistive circuit showing necessary meters. 2marks

Q. Define: i) Frequency ii) Form factor. 2marks

Ans:
i) Frequency:

The number of cycles completed by an alternating quantity in one second is called as frequency. Its unit
is cycles/second or hertz.
ii) Form factor:

It is defined as the ratio of RMS value to the Average value of an alternating quantity.
Q. Current flowing through the circuit is I = 141.4 Sin (314t – 𝜋/2) amp. Calculate: i) Frequency ii)

Q. Define following terms used in A.C. circuit. 4marks

i) Cycle ii) Frequency
iii) Phase iv) Average value
Ans:
i) Cycle:
A complete set of variation of an alternating quantity which is repeated at
regular interval of time is called as a cycle.
OR
Each repetition of an alternating quantity recurring at equal intervals is
known as a cycle.
ii) Frequency :-
Number of cycles completed by an alternating quantity in one second is
called as frequency. Its unit is cycles/second or hertz.
iii) Phase:
It is defined as the fractional part of a period or cycle through which the
quantity has advanced from its selected origin (usually last zero value
while increasing towards positive maximum value).
iv) Average Value:

It is defined as the arithmetical average or mean of all the values of an

alternating quantity over one cycle.
OR
For an alternating current , the average value is defined as that value of
steady current (DC) which transfers the same charge as is transferred by
the alternating current during the same time under the same conditions.
