Background
The community education and training proceeding has been designed to help support the
Waste Strategy work towards a vision of zero waste in every ward of Birendranagar. The
main desired objective for implementing the strategy include:
The Waste Education and Awareness Strategy generally consist of the following key
components:
Aims to increase the community’s knowledge and improve attitudes and practices
through building upon existing programs.
The Zero Waste Awareness Program, which aims to increase the level of community
awareness about waste issues in general.
Methodology
The training content was developed according to the need of participants in a simple and
practical way. The delivery of the training using a picture visualization process encouraged
the participants to consider the training programme as a journey of transformation. Within
this overall approach, the methodologies considered are as follows:

Major Content:
Presentation by the trainer on the concept of waste, segregation, methods of
composting manure and various challenges.

Simplifying the waste concept with practical base activity.
In- depth knowledge about the technical aspect of composting manure.
Training Proceeding
The training (workshop) commenced with an introduction of the ground rules that required
the participants to take their seat. Mr Resham Nepali then took control of the session by
welcoming the participants to introduce themselves. Then Ms Sunita Thapa provided an
analysis on the concept of waste management where participants were asked to describe the
waste that came to their mind upon thinking about waste. This session was about learning the
definition of term waste. Then, she talked about the core reason for unsystematic arrangement
of waste in Birendranagar municipality pointing out public awareness is the main backbone
of SWM in every ward of surkhet. Reviewing the participant’s understanding Ms Sunita
Thapa carried on the participant about the importance of waste segregation and how waste
can be managed in systematic way, considering the greenery ideology with a slogan of “clean
Surkhet healthy air”. She further elaborated the process of creating manual composting by
using technical tools and material. Mr Pasupati Rijal continued the training by addressing the
required material for making manual composting. He assisted Ms Sunita Thapa by explaining
the process of manure composting by mixing EM (effective microorganism), water and
bheali.
To close off the training the participants reflected their opinions views that strategized the
way to learn new required knowledge and understanding regarding waste management. Mr
Resham Nepali then wrapped up the session with an Inspiring speech reflecting the
importance of waste management in our community so as to live healthy life.

Exclusive criteria for selection of land for landfill site encouraging privatization.
Techical aspects of waste segregation by using modern technology.

Challenges:
The following challenges were identified by the participants in relation to their learning:
The different types of experience shared by the participants was slightly challenging
for the group and not always perceived as creating an ideal space for learning from
each other. It is essential to take the learner’s preferences and their learning habits
into account to deliver a training. So, sharing the participants’ professional
background at the beginning of the workshop could have helped in planning the better
delivery of the training.
Recommendation:
Based on a brief and informal assessment by the trainers, we present the following
reccomendations:
To make it necessary to conduct a learning needs asssessment before the
tranning in order to gauge the participants’ level of awareness and
understanding about the concept.
To revise the presentation to make them less text heavy and more interactive.
Evaluate the feedbacks given by the participants and use it to make
necessary improvements.
