Science: Newton's Law of Motion-Law of Interaction

What happens to you when you seat over without chair? – you fall. How about
if you seat on a chair? – you don’t fall. Why? This is because the forces acting on
you are balanced. The force of gravity pulling you down against your chair is
balanced by the force of the chair pushing up against you.
This learning material helps you understand why you do not fall as you sit on
a chair, as you walk on a road or as you lean on a wall. In this learning material, you
will be performing activities and answering questions about the third law of motion.
The third Law of Motion, is known as the Law of Interaction which states that for
every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Whenever one object exerts a
force on a second object, the second object exerts an equal and opposite force on
the first object. For example, you seat on a chair, the force you exert on the chair has
equal amount of the force exerted by the chair on you.
A Force is simply defined as a push or pull resulting from an interaction
between two objects. Whenever there is a force, there are two objects involved – the
object that pushes and the objects that pulls in different direction. While the direction
of the pushes ( or pulls) is opposite, the strength or magnitude is equal.
In the example given above, there are two forces resulting from this
interaction – a force exerted by you on the chair, and the force exerted by the chair
on you. These two forces are called action and reaction forces which is stated in the
Newton’s Third Law of motion.
