Honors Syllabus 6th Grade Math

Welcome to 6th Grade Math! You have been chosen to be a part of the Honors course as a
result of your hard work and dedication as indicated by your excellent MAP scores and
teacher recommendations. The Honors class will be a part of the regular class, except that
you will be performing additional/different work throughout the year. Let’s take a look at
how Honors Math will be different than regular math. - Br. Yahya

The Honors Challenge Option:

This challenge is for the truly bright. In this option, if you can study and master a chapter’s ma-
terial by yourself, before the class studies the chapter, you can skip the entire chapter’s worth
of work.
How will this work? First, study the material in the chapter on your own and practice the material.
Use Khan’s Academy to supplement the material. If you think you have mastered the material, let
me know, and within a week, I will give you the chapter exam. If you pass the test with a score of
atleast 92%, you are exempt from the chapter’s material. Instead of the usual work, you will be
given an ‘A’ grade for that chapter, and will work on other projects instead.

Daily Classwork:
Most of the work in your daily classwork will be the same as the other students. However, you will
be given a few additional assignments to work on.
 3 ‘Enrich’ assignments - For 3 lessons in each chapter, you will be given an advanced assignment
to take your learning to the next level.
 1 Math Competition Problem Set - For each chapter, corresponding problems from local and na-
tional level math competitions will be assembled. Each problem set will have 5-10 problems.
These will require deeper thinking and creativity to solve.
 Tutoring - During I-Ready time, a few students will be given additional tutoring to bring them
to a more advanced level. This will be dependent on how much more the student can learn.

Projects:
Each semester, Honor students will be responsible for completing one project. Project grades will
count for 15% of the term’s grades. The following two projects will be assigned this year (More
details will be given as project progresses):
 Baking Challenge - Students will be responsible for using a baking recipe to produce a baked
good. Then, they will need to perform calculations and use appropriate measuring tools to pro-
duce baked goods for a larger or smaller number of diners.
 Architecture Project - Students will learn how to produce a blueprint of a house. They will
need to design the floorplan of the house, and then perform various calculations, including ar-
ea, volume, etc.
