Transportation Engineering Assignment 1
Transportation Engineering Assignment 1
ASSIGNMENT NO. 1:
1. Identify all the modes of transport in the region and list down their physical facilities, fleets, and the
organizations that cover them. Also, provide some remarks regarding their accessibility and productivity.
Present these data in a tabular form.

2. Conduct a simple research. Choose 1 mode of transport, identify and discuss one specific mean that
represent the chosen mode. For example, your choice of mode is the air transportation. You can discuss a
certain type of aircrafts such as the Boeing 747, the European Airbus, Beechcraft Twin Otter or etc. Prepare
a one-page single-spaced summary for the examples. The summary should include mobility, accessibility,
type of service and cost.
The Boeing 777-300ER is the world's largest long-range twin-engine airliner, with the world's
largest and most powerful commercial jet engine. The B777-300ER provides passengers with unrivaled
levels of payload and range, as well as great fuel economy, efficiency, durability, and high levels of cabin
luxury [2]. The aircraft can fly between long-haul destinations such as Los Angeles and Sydney, New York
and Hong Kong, Singapore and London, Paris and Los Angeles, and Dubai and New York for up to 15 hours.
The aircraft is powered by General Electric GE90-115B engines that produce 115,300lb of thrust (512kN).
At 35,000 feet, the aircraft's normal cruise speed is Mach 0.84 [3].
The aircraft is spacious, featuring 368 seats and a range of 5,700 nautical miles (10,500 km). It has
a length of 73.9m, has a height of 18.5m, and a wingspan of 60.9m. It’s predecessor, the B777-200, was
almost 1,000 nautical miles and 50 seats shorter [4]. Mobility of the passenger will vary depending on the
airline. For example, the B777-300ER at United Airlines has a 17-inch-wide seat with just 31 inches of pitch
in the Economy section. Although not all seats are the same, but for the average passenger, it is narrow and
closed together, making it an unpleasant flying experience [5]. The Polaris Business Class, however, is a
different story. It features 60 Polaris seats that look like cubicles or pods, customized in a 1-2-1
configuration. It is divided into two, 28 seats in the front cabin and 32 in the rear [6]. The Boeing 777-300ERs
operated by PAL have very similar features, with the obvious difference in appearance and design. The
B777-300ER at Emirates on the other hand, is regarded as “a very comfortable plane to fly on” due to its
overall features from first to economy class. It is divided into three sections: Economy, Business, and First
class, each being fancier and more comfortable than the former. First class features 8 cabins, with a seat
pitch of 69 inches when lied fully flat, a seat width of 20.5 inches, and the seat has a minibar in the armrest.
It has a lot more features like a huge TV, a snack basket, and a vanity kit/mirror. Even in the Business and
Economy class, it is still comfortable considering that they are configured in a 2-3-2 and 3-4-3 configuration
respectively [7].
The B77-300ER is used by famous airlines around the world, including but not limited to,
Philippine Airlines (PAL), United Airlines, Singapore Airlines, and Emirates, to name a few. In terms of
accessibility, the B777s can be found on every inhabitant continent in the world [8]. As of August 8, 2021,
there are 655 B777-300ERs in service with 41 airlines throughout the world. Meanwhile, 167 aircraft from
27 carriers are currently listed as inactive. Finally, only three have been scrapped globally [10]. Currently,
PAL has a total of 10 B777-300ERs averaging 7.5 years old, with half of it in service while the other half is
parked [9]. With 124 aircraft, Emirates is the model largest operator. There are 118 current members and
six inactive members. Air France has 43, while Cathay Pacific and Qatar Airways each have 48 [10]. In terms
of costs, the current value of the aircraft ranges from US$30 to US$100 million. On a more detailed look at
Qantas Airways flights, on a Boeing 777-300ER flight from Sydney to Los Angeles, the airline spends a total
of $190,422. $9,652 in food and drink, $9,653 in staff pay, $31,117 in airport taxes and navigation services,
and over $140,000 in fuel to fly the 361-seat plane on the 14-hour journey [11].
The Boeing 777 is one of the world's safest and most successful aircraft. There's a good chance
you've taken a long-haul flight in the last two decades. What was once flying with United Airlines in 1995
is currently a part of the fleets of over 50 different airlines. The commonly referred to as the "triple seven"
has become a popular choice among airlines and pilots. Airlines adore it because of how it affects their
financial statements, and pilots adore it because of its ease and versatility [12]. The aircraft itself is reliable,
loved by passengers and airline crews alike, and has a history in aviation like no other. When the pandemic
subsides and international flights become available, it would be a good choice to board a B777.
