EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
10
Title of the Project: Zoom vs Google Meet: A comparison based on the perception of the
students of Dibrugarh University for the best application for study.
Institutional Guide: Dr Pratim Barua (Associate Professor, Centre for Management Studies,
Dibrugarh University), Dibrugarh.
Area under study: Dibrugarh University.
Objectives:
To know the awareness level about Zoom and Google Meet.
To understand the perception of the students about both the applications.
To find out the best application for study among both the applications.
Scope: This survey helps to understand and know the awareness level and the perception of
the students of Dibrugarh University. Also, to the study is to find out the best application for
study among the applications.
Findings: Google Meet has been able to outplace the former with its features and smoother
and faster usage among the respondents. Google Meet is more preferable by the students
when it comes to virtual classes mainly because of the easy user interface that Google Meet
has as students prefer easier user and a computer system interaction. In case of good quality
video conferencing, Zoom is able to outplace Google Meet. Maximum of the respondents
have chosen Google Meet as the application to study and they prefer to use it during the
online classes.
Conclusion: For the respondents Google meet outplaced Zoom in a lot of levels. They
preferred the application as because it had a user-friendly interface, used lesser data and
smoother and faster usage. Most of the respondents weren’t much aware about the security
features of the applications and in case of quality video conferencing, Zoom outplaced
Google Meet. Maximum of the respondents have chosen Google Meet as the application to
study and they prefer to use it during the online classes.

1.3 About the Company:
Both the applications are video conferencing platforms and it is one of the major technologies
that enables seamless remote work. It is a software solution designed to facilitate face-to-face
collaboration between teammates regardless of their location.
Eric Yuan, a former Cisco engineer and executive, founded Zoom in 2011, and launched its
software in 2013. Zoom's aggressive revenue growth, and perceived ease-of-use and
reliability of its software, resulted in a $1 billion valuation in 2017, making it a "unicorn"
company. The company first became profitable in 2019, and completed an initial public
offering that year. The company joined the NASDAQ-100 stock index on April 30, 2020.
While Google Meet introduced the above features to upgrade the original Hangouts
application, some standard Hangouts features were deprecated, including viewing attendees
and chat simultaneously. The number of video feeds allowed at one time was also reduced to
8 (while up to 4 feeds can be shown in the "tiles" layout), prioritizing those attendees who
most recently used their microphone. Additionally, features such as the chat box were
changed to overlay the video feeds, rather than resizing the latter to fit. Hangouts is scheduled
to cease operation in the first half of 2021.
During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, the use of Meet grew by a factor of 30 between
January and April 2020, with 100 million users a day accessing Meet, compared to 200
million daily uses for Zoom as of the last week of April 2020. Google suspended its usual 60-
minute limit for unpaid accounts.

CHAPTER 2.0: LITERATURE REVIEW
14
Brophy, J. (2005). Goal Theorists Should Move on from Performance Goals.
Educational Psychologist, Rahman, D. (2020). A Reckoning for Online Learning in
Times of Crisis. The Star. Mardesci, H. (2020). The Effect of Online Learning on
University Students’ Learning Motivation. Online Learning:
It is not at all argumentative that educators face many challenges in this new norm i.e., the
online learning. One of the most important challenges in online teaching and learning is
students’ motivation towards online teaching and learning. Motivation can be defined as the
student’s desire to learn something in a learning environment (Brophy, 2005). The students’
motivation is derived from the interaction between the educators and their students (Brophy,
2005). Conventional education processes deal with physical interaction and communication
of the students in classroom but during this pandemic outbreak, the educators face obstruction
in motivating students to participate and also to stay attentive during online learning classes.
Aside from the difficulties to motivate, difficulty in interacting and supervising the students
since they are not meeting them face-to-face is also one of the problems the educators are
facing.
Mardesci (2020) stated that online learning mainly affected the students’ motivation to learn
due to different other factors such as teaching method, lack of facilities such as laptop and
internet connection as well as interaction process in the online teaching and learning. Without
motivation from both the parties, it would be difficult for effective online teaching and
learning to take place.
The Round Table, 109, 1-2. Rahman, D. (2020). A Reckoning for Online Learning in
Times of Crisis. The Star:
The Covid-19 pandemic has made the education systems around the world to find some
options for learning as the Covid-19 has affected and hampered the whole education system.
Due to this unprecedented Covid-19 crisis, face-to-face classrooms are no longer permitted in
most countries as a measure minimise the spread of Covid-19 pandemic (Rahman, 2020).
Online teaching and learning have been fully implemented. There are a few strategies that
can be implemented in online remote teaching and learning such as the use of suitable online
platform, applying tools that exist or occur at the same time or not, as well as giving feedback
to increase students’ motivation and participation.

CHAPTER 3.0: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
3.4 Research Instrument: Data are collected from primary source. A well-structured
questionnaire comprising of both open and close ended questions was used. Questionnaire for
the students is designed to drive the project as per the objectives.
3.5 Data Collection Tools: Google forms (close and open- ended questions)
3.8.5 Methodology:
The Researcher had been assigned to do “ZOOM VS GOOGLE MEET: A
COMPARISON BASED ON THE PERCEPTION OF THE STUDENTS OF DIBRUGARH
UNIVERSITY FOR THE BEST APPLICATION FOR STUDY” and to create a consolidated
data from the students. Researcher had done google form questionnaire interview to students
to take their feedback from my predesigned questionnaire, which was as a tool to collect
16
feedback. The study focuses on understanding the student perception, awareness level and the
best application for study between both the applications. The study reveals the ways of a
student perception about both the applications.
The main purpose of studying this topic is to understand how different the perceptions are
from one student to another. Therefore, I have conducted this research to find out the
perception of the students.
This study is pure research and it is descriptive in nature. In our study, the population is 2,223
in number, out of which our sample size consisted of 92 numbers which I have collected data
from them according to the questionnaire prepared by me.
This sampling is done by using the method of non-probabilistic sampling, convenience
sampling which is a type of sampling where the first available primary data are used for the
research. In this research, we have collected the data by using the method of primary data
collection. I have collected information through google form questionnaire from the students.

CHAPTER 5.1: FINDINGS
Going by the data collected through google form questionnaire, these are the findings:
Google Meet and Zoom are the current video conferencing platforms which gained or
are gaining significant popularity among the students. However, Google Meet has
been able to outplace the former with its features and smoother and faster usage
among the respondents.
Google Meet is more preferable by the students when it comes to virtual classes
mainly because of the easy user interface that Google Meet has as students prefer
easier user and a computer system interaction.
Most of the respondents are not at all aware about the pricing plans of both the
applications and are unsure about if they know about the security features of both the
applications as students mostly are unaware of the cons of working outside of their
study place networks.
Google Meet has been able to outplace Zoom where students have responded about
the smoother video conferencing even with larger groups and better for long purpose
presentations and meetings as Zoom consumes for about 540 mb per hour for standard
high quality and a slightly lesser data in mobile, but consumes much data than Google
Meet.
In case of good quality video conferencing, Zoom is able to outplace Google Meet.
Maximum of the respondents have chosen Google Meet as the application to study
and they prefer to use it during the online classes.
Google Meet and Zoom has been quite popular among the students specially the
usage increased a lot during the Covid 19 pandemic as restrictions were imposed on
holding of physical classes and lockdowns happened thereby confining students and
teachers to their homes. In such a scenario, large number of students took to using
these applications for class interactions between teachers and the class.
34
For Google Meet:
Google meet should focus on giving good quality video conferencing even in lower
data consumption.
Google meet must look through suitability of organising a webinar and also try
increasing the number of participants that can join to more than 250.
For Zoom:
Zoom should try working more on its interface as many of the respondents found
Zoom to be complex to use.
Zoom should look through its privacy issues as intruders have been able to access
video meetings that were not password protected.
Respondents also complained about network issues that Zoom has as it consumes
more data than Google meet.
35
The end semester project assigned to me is done with the students of Dibrugarh University.
All efforts have been made to do the same. The information is gathered from the students
regarding the questions put on the questionnaire. All efforts made to avoid biasness from all
those gathered information. As the research universe was the whole university students, the
results may not be truly reflective, but I have tried my best to find out a reasonable solution.
The basic conclusions resulting from the survey are:
For the respondents Google meet outplaced Zoom in a lot of levels. They preferred the
application as because it had a user-friendly interface, used lesser data and smoother and
faster usage. Most of the respondents weren’t much aware about the security features of the
applications and in case of quality video conferencing, Zoom outplaced Google Meet.
Maximum of the respondents have chosen Google Meet as the application to study and they
prefer to use it during the online classes.
