Module 6pdf
1. Overview
In Genesis 1:26, God said “Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the
birds of the air, and the cattle, and over all the wild animals and all the creatures
that crawl on the ground.” He made man the manager of his creation. You are a
steward of God’s creation.
God takes care of the earth with you. Psalm 65:10-11 describes you as the co-
creator of God. “You visit the earth and water it; make it abundantly fertile. God’s
steam is field with water; with it you supply the world with grain. Thus do you
prepare the earth; you drench plowed furrows and level their ridges. With
showers you keep ground soft, blessing its young sprouts.
But sadly, man is not a good manager. Charles A. Lindbergh once said,
“How long can men thrive between walls of bricks, walking so asphalt pavement,
breathing the fumes of coal and oil, growing, working, dying, with hardly a
thought of wind, and sky, and fields of grain, seeing only machine-made beauty,
the mineral-like quality of life? To McMillan added, “For 200 years we’ve been
conquering Nature. Now we’re beating it to death.
For our last module we move to PAGKAMAKA-KALISAN. Under this core
value you will try to understand Good Citizenship Value of Concern for
Environment.
3. Content/ Discussion
Introduction
Listen to the Song “Kapaligiran” by Asin in https://youtu.be/iqhwDrOO2bI
Today we are confronted with issues regarding the “Value of Concern for the
Environment” some of which are:
a. Perennial waste problems in the urban areas
b. Air pollution and ozone layer depletion
c. Proliferation of factories and industries that potentially endanger the environment
a. Activity
Choose three from the foregoing issues and write what you feel about them
and the reason behind it. Answer the questions that follow
Feelings: it’s like the people who we chose to lead this country is ignoring the one thing that
keeps us alive, our environment.
Issue 2: Inadequate education of the youth and masses regarding the dire state of our country’s
environment and natural resources.
Feelings: It feels like they are hiding the fact that are environment is deteriorating from the
people who can save them, it feels like they are trying to destroy it.
Feelings: People who do this only cares about themselves they don’t even care about the
environment only the things that makes them happy.
Questions:
1. Do you feel a strong degree of ownership of the issues you have chosen? Why?
No, people are the one creating these issues, I don’t have a strong degree of ownerships among these
issues because I never done them I will never do it in the future. _
_
2. Are you moved enough to action: to fight, reason out, complain and protest against those
issues? Why did you say so?
Yes, because every second our environment is deteriorating, every second must count if we are going
to save it. _
_
b. Analysis
Put a check under Yes, No or maybe as your case dictates.
What do your answers tell about the degree of your concern for the environment?
It tells me that I want to protect the environment, to save it from the people ruining. It is our one and
only nature. and if we don’t do something it will all be destroyed and it will never come back, this is
our only chance to save it. _

Let us see more about “Concern for Environment” in the following anecdote.
The Giving Tree
Fr. Benigno P. Beltran SVD
Once there was a tree … and she loved a little boy. And everyday the boy would
gather her leaves, make them into a crown and play king of the forest. The boy
would also play hide and seek, and climb her branches and her mangoes. At the
end of the day when he was tired, the boy would sleep in her shade. And the boy
loved the tree… very much and the tree was very happy.
But the time went on… and the boy grew older. And the tree was often alone.
Then one day the boy went to the tree who said, “Come, boy come and climb up
my trunk, swing from my branches, eat my mangoes, play in the shade and be
happy.’ I am too big to climb and play and I don’t have money,” said the boy, “If
only I can have some money.” “I am sorry,” said the tree, “but I don’t have money.
Go take my mangoes, boy and sell them to the market. That way, you will have
enough money and you will be happy.” And so the boy gathered her mangoes
and carried them away. And the tree was happy.
But the boy stayed away for a long time… Then one day the boy came back to the
tree who shook with joy and said, “Come, boy come and climb up my trunk,
swing from my branches, eat my mangoes, play in the shade and be happy.” “I am
busy to climb tress,” said the boy. I want a house to keep me warm. I want a wife
and children and so I need a house, Can you give me a house?” “I have no house,”
said the tree, “The forest is my house, but you may cut off my branches and build
a house. “ And so the boy cut off her branches and carried them away to build his
house. And the tree was happy.
But the boy stayed away for too long time…then one day the boy came back and
the tree was so happy that she could barely speak. “Come boy” she whispered,
“Come and play.” “I am too old to play.” said the boy. “I want a boat that will take
me far away from here. Can you give a boat?” “Cut down my trunk and make a
boat,’ said the tree. “Then you can sail away and be happy.” And so the boy cut
down the trunk and made a boat and sailed away. And the tree was happy…but
not really.
And after a time the boy came back again. “I am sorry boy,” said the tree. “But I
have nothing left to give you- my mangoes are gone,” “My teeth are too weak for
mangoes,” said the boy. “My branches are gone. You cannot swing on them.” Said
the tree, “I am too old to swing on branches.” Said the boy. “My trunk is gone, you
cannot climb,” said the tree. “I am too tired to climb,’ said the boy. “I am sorry,”
sighed the tree. “I wish that I could give you something… but I have nothing left. I
am just an old stump. I am sorry.” “I don’t need very much now, “said the boy,
“just a quite place to sit and rest. I am very tired.’ “Well’ said the tree,
straightening herself up as much as she could, “Well an old stump is good for
sitting and resting. Come boy sit down and rest.” And the boy did and the tree
was happy.
b.2 create a program that teaches kids how to take care the environment.
c.1 Preach to the people that the environment needs their help.
c.2 Tell them that environment was also Gods creation to encourage them to help.
Evaluate yourself in terms of The Good Citizenship Value of Concern for the Environment by putting
a check on Yes or No as the case may be. Write your resolution and prayer based on your evaluation.
