Relationship of Tourism and Hospitality

1. Both the Tourism and Hospitality Industry affect one another.
- Both tourism and hospitality industry directly affect each other as they both benefit on
the growth of each other and thus suffer in the demise or fall of the other.
- For example; (a) According to the www.travelandleisure.com, Palawan was voted as the
best islands in the world. With that result, we can expect that different tourists all over
the world would be excited to visit Palawan, to personally experience why it was voted
as such. In relation to the intent of people (tourists) to visit Palawan, the tourism in
Palawan would increase as we expect the arrival of different tourists coming to visit
Palawan. Tourism then can affect the growth of hospitality as tourists would also need
different establishment to cater their personal needs such as (but not limited to),
accommodation (hotels), food and beverage (restaurants) and recreation (spa, resorts,
and of such). To read more about the World’s Best Awards survey of Travel + Leisure,
you can read the full article at https://www.travelandleisure.com/worlds-
best/islands. (b) According to the www.tripadvisor.com, Okada Manila Resort &
Casino was voted as #1 Best Value of 254 Spa Hotels in the Philippines. Being
awarded as a top spa hotel in the Philippines, Okada Manila Resort & Casino can
expect people (guests) would want to try their services. As interest of guests to
try Okada increases, guests would want to try and book for an overnight stay or
book their spa services. With an average cost of about P10,500++ (+service
charge and +tax) a night not everyone can afford that rate thus, guests can book
through different travel agencies or online bookings for a better rate. To see the
complete list you can refer to https://www.tripadvisor.com/HotelsList-
Philippines-Spa-Hotels-zfp7779536.html. To summarize this observation, we can
clearly relate that if the demand for tourism increases, the demand for
hospitality can also increase and vice versa.
2. Experts consider both as one large industry
- As some experts continuously regard the interrelation of tourism and hospitality, they
would consider that ultimately tourism and hospitality is one and the same as they
clearly rely on each other and is closely related.
3. The combined industry is composed of:
a. Food & Beverage Services
b. Lodging Services
c. Recreational Services
d. Travel-Related Services

Early Beginnings

It was believed that the first concept of tourism and hospitality was used by the Sumerians, in
which they have pioneered the use of money and trade, which often uses traveling from one place to
another, and during long hauls of travel for their transactions Sumerians often requires accommodation.

The Silk Road

Contrary to what you may be thinking, the Silk Road is not actually a road (or a visible one at
that). The Silk Road is the route which connected the East and West trades, which involves more than
silk, but also furs, ceramics, spices and a lot more.
Often these routes are filled with thieves waiting to ambush merchants, so hiring escorts for
protection was involved.
This era contributed as well to the development of more trade of products, culture,
advancement of travel and accommodation.

The Classical World

During this period, records of remarkable evolution about travel for trade, religious espionage,
festivals, travel for medical purpose, travel for education and even a grand scale sporting event which
we now all know today as the Olympic Games.

Records of evolution of tourism was also seen in different civilizations such as:
 Chinese
 Polynesians
 Europeans
 Americans

Records of early Tourist Attractions were also written such as:

 The Great Pyramids of Egypt
 The Hanging Gardens of Babylon
 The Tomb of Mausolus
 The Statue of Zeus
 The Colossus of Rhodes
 The Great Lighthouse in Alexandria
 The Temple of Artemis

Evolution of different sectors of tourism and hospitality have also greatly contributed to what we are
familiar with now.
 Spas and Bath – gave way to modern spas and resorts
 Travel Agents – pioneered booking people for travel as their source of income
 Transportation – advancement of Stagecoach, advancement of water travel, rail travel,
automobile and air travel have expanded the reach of people’s capacity to travel to more
places and discover more tourist attractions
 Evolution of Accommodation – as transportation rises, the need for accommodation also
increased
